Hypoglycemia is when you have too little sugar (well that is a very
simplistic description). Diabetics cannot control their glucose through
normal body functioning so we can become both "hypo" (low blood sugar) or
hyper (high blood sugar).
So no that is not type 1 diabetes. They have changed the way type 1 and
type 2 are defined over the last 10 years or so. Type 1 was once considered
juvenile diabetes (meaning it onset during childhood) and type 2 was
considered Adult Onset (Meaning the onset happened in your adult years).
Now most (not all but most) Dr's refer to type 1 as being insulin dependent
and type 2 being non-insulin dependent. So the next question would be
"Don't all diabetics use Insulin?". The answer is no. Type 2 diabetes are
usually resistant to their own insulin. Their pancreas actually produces
insulin it just either makes too little or the body resists its absorption
and so they don't get it in the amounts the body needs. There are oral
medications that can be used by some people that can do a couple of
different things. Some help the body accept the insulin it makes and others
increase the production of insulin. If you can control the diabetes with
oral medication than you are considered type 2 or non insulin dependent.
Some people (like me) cannot (well for me past tense...could not) control
their diabetes without insulin. The pills never helped me and I was
dependent on Insulin. So even though my diabetes was onset when I was an
adult I was type 1. One Dr said to be completely accurate I was a "type 2
diabetic who presented as type 1"...but that gets way too confusing.
So hopefully that helps and didn't confuse your further.

Pill crushers are fine, but remember that the crushed pill usually tastes very
bitter. I wouldn't recommend putting the powder on your tongue and drinking it
down. When I was using a pill crusher, I would sandwich the powder between
layers of applesauce on a spoon. Still a little tricky not getting any on your
tongue, but definitely worth a try!

The Steel Demon of Terror and my century mark...

2006-09-28 06:24:52

Well well here I am again with the latest news. I overcame the aqua blue
steel demon. I took it out one day last week and rode it and broke its spirit. I
got on it again yesterday to make sure it knew who was the boss. I got astride
that two wheeled reign of terror and sped off. The wind was blowing my little
bit of hair and my lips were peeled back from the high impact of speed that
kept rising against my teeth and it was on. It tried so hard to throw me off but
I held on. Daring it to try and get cute! I braved the odds of me falling off
and ripping skin and won the war this time! The only thing is that my legs
are so out of shape that the left knee wants to buckle on me when I get off. So
the now docile machine of speed also aids me in supporting myself so the steps
leading back up into the house don't swallow me up! lol Bad steps bad
steps!!!!! I was truly glad to overcome this thing and be able to ride again.
And
for the second bit of news...as of today I lost a total of 100 pounds. Now
weighing in at 249. It was quite an emotional rush for me to realize that I had
truly lost 100 pounds now. I still can't believe it! Thanks to Rudy who gave me
some pointers that worked out great and much to my advantage for the long haul
and maintaining the weight loss. Thanks Rudy! It is so nice to go and buy
jeans and not have to worry if they will fit or not. And to go into a store and
buy a blouse that I don't have to worry about the big ole belly showing and so
much smaller now. I just love it! So I am now heading for my goal of 200 then
after I reach that one I will go for the next goal of 150. That is where I want
to stop, hopefully I will be able to maintain at that goal. I thought I had
done well yesterday when I got up and weighed and had lost three pounds after
sitting still for a while, then today I weighed and had lost another five
pounds. Makes me wonder...where does the weight go? lol. Just away is all I know
but no matter what I love it! Thanks for letting me spread my good news. Hugs to
you all! God Bless and Skinny Wishes!

Insurance, possible Diabetes

2006-09-27 20:18:47

I am not a diabetic, however my little sister (21 now) is. She was diagnosed
when she was 10 years old. She is type I. The main difference between Type
I and Type II is the function of the pancreas. The pancreas in a type I
Diabetic produces no insulin. Therefore, they need to give themselves insulin.
THe pancreas of a type II Diabetic does not completely shut down. It "slows"
down. It still produces insulin, just not enough to counteract the sugar. The
pancreas of a type II Diabetic will never completely shut down. Hypoglycemia
is the opposite. The pancreas produces too much insulin. Hypoglycemics need
to eat, otherwise, they will produce insulin and not have any "sugar" in their
system. However, people with hypoglycemia can never eat too much sugar
because the pancreas with overproduce the insulin and cause a reaction.
Hypoglycemia is actually an indicator that diabetes may be in the future. Hope
this
helps a little bit

Sorry to hear about your hernia Doug. I'm glad you're seeing the dr
tomorrow. I had alot of throwing up for the first couple weeks (my
surgery was 12/22) and the doctor told me to go back a stage on my
eating if that happens too often because he said the 'violence' of
throwing up can cause a hernia. I don't know your situation but
since you already have a hernia I would recommend posting your
question also at the obesityhelp.com website There is so many

RE: soft food stage

2006-09-26 11:45:45

Dear Allan,
Cheeses, yogurt, tuna, salmon, sardines (skinless and boneless), thinly
sliced deli meats, pintos and cheese from Taco Bell or chili from
Wendy's (if you're out and want something quick).
Have you considered protein shakes yet? I highly recommend the Champion
Pure Whey Stack (chocolate is my favorite, though all their flavors are
good). It is almost a physical impossibility to get in your required
protein amount at this stage without the assistance of shakes. If you'd
like to sample a few different varieties, visit Vitalady.com or
wlssuccess.com and view the samples they sell. They are usually a range
of $1 to $2 each, plus shipping, but it's a lot better than buying a big
jug of something and getting stuck with something you don't like. Also,
if you're on the "lazier" side (as I am), you can buy the Atkins shakes
in a can (20 grams of protein) at Wal-mart or your local supermarket for
about $6 for 4 cans, or you can get an excellent one called RTD Extreme
Smoothie. It's sold at the Vitamin Shoppe and has a whopping 35 grams
of protein in one 11 oz. can. Comes in vanilla, chocolate and
strawberry and tastes great. Also, if you don't like the shake
consistency, but prefer something closer to crystal lite, try the
Isopure zero carb, zero sugar drinks. They are 20 oz. bottles and have
between 40 and 50 grams of protein per bottle, so if you take one and
split it into two drinks, rather than drink it all at once, you've
gotten in most of your minimal protein amount for the day. Add that to
any food you're eating, and your protein intake will be perfect.

Had my one year today. And it went very well! Have to take calcium

Upped me to 2 over the counter vitamins, I would only have to take

belonging to my husband (all of them teenagers!!) the thought of
ANYTHING "prenatal" scares the daylights out of me!! LOL Anyway,
the visit went well. Have to continue to concentrate on protein.

Dear Allan,
Pintos and cheese are beans with cheddar cheese. They come in a cup and
the cheese is melted. You can also order the bean burrito, though
still, for me, the most I can eat of one is a third. The burrito comes
in a tortilla shell. Wendy's chili has beans and meat and cheese, very
high in protein.
Frozen fish, I either put in the broiler with some butter or I do it in
a pan with some butter. No, I'm not a renegade in the fats department,
but I know that being distal I don't absorb fats anymore, so I'm not
going to get crazy with low-fat, or with cooking sprays and avoid
butter. I don't (won't) eat margarine ever, so I just go for the real
stuff. I don't overdo it, but I have to enjoy what I eat because I eat
so little of it.

Want to share a story...

2006-09-21 02:36:55

I have been posting on this groupd for a couple of weeks now and
thank God that I found it! I just want to share something from my
heart for all of you that know what it is like to have your dream of
losing weight and being "normal" feels like and for those of you who
are waiting for your approvals...
I have been fat all my life. When I had my surgery in January of
2003, I weighed 292. I am now down to 140. But this surgery has
given my more than a size 8, more than a weight on a scale that I
don't have to be ashamed of. Last February, my oldest son went into
the Army (this kid blew off a full scholarship to jin the Army!!).
I did not want him to do this but he was 20 and could make those
decisions on his own. I had major complications, as you know, from
my surgery and couldn't even go to the airport to see him off. In
June, I went to his graduation from basic Training, He didn't even
recognize me! I had lost so much! That was wonderful, but what is
even better, is this... I started jogging in the mornings. I have
always wanted to run and now I do. When he came home this past
Sept., we were able to go out together and jog. Just him and I. It
was so special to spend that time together. I just found out that
he is being deployed to Afganistan, 1st strike unit, this Sunday.
My heart is breaking. One of the most inportant things this surgery
has done for me was to give me that time, jogging, with my son. I
could have never done that before. There is a real possibility that
something, God forbid, could happen to him there, as things seem to
be heating up in that part of the world. But I was able to be with
my son, doing something important to him, we were able to be
together. I will be forever grateful for that. So, for all of you
waiting, for all of you that are wondering if youc an make it
through, look at what dreams come true. Look at what this will let
you share with your families. Thank God for it..Please pray for my
son.
God bless you all
Tami

Re: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] Want to share a story...

2006-09-20 22:37:09

Wow Tami, I have tears rolling down my face and don't know what to say. I
am so happy for you that you were able to jog with your son. I so look
forward to be able to start sharing experiences like that with the people I
love.
I am a military brat and so I cannot even begin to tell you how much I
admire and respect your son for what he is doing. My father was a Marine
and as he said grace at our Christmas dinner it was centered around the men
serving in the military at this moment, and asking us all to pray and do
whatever we can for them. If there is anything at all I can do for your son
or for you, I am here for you.
You, your son and all of your family will be in my thoughts and prayers and
he takes on this duty.

Re: weight gain

2006-09-20 11:23:19

Your blood presure is not the cause. Several things can cause it. New
medications, changes in meds, then there is kidney failure, congestive heart
failure. With wls there was study done showing the effects of eatting to much
protien was causing damage to kidneys. I cant verify this as true but will ck
with hospital drs on my next paramedic shift cori

Re: Pureed ideas??

2006-09-20 09:08:42

HI Tracy,
I am 9 wks out and I remember the puree' stage very well. I still
have to puree' some foods. My surgeon told me that you can puree'
just about anything. I never ate baby food. I was told to put it in
a blender and mix very well.
Here are some of the things I was allowed to eat:
green beans
mac & cheese
any creamed soups (potato, broccoli,onion,chicken)
soupy mashed potatos
yogurt (lived off yogurt for 5 wks..lol)
I also put tuna fish(in water drained) in a blender and added a lil
fat free mayo that is pretty good.
Bur ask your Dr or his nurse...they casn give you a good idea of
what you cn eat...Since every Dr is diff.
Hoped this helped

Hi everyone. I just added my 8 week post op pics to my southernangels
album. For the last 3 weeks I have been on a major plateau. I havent
been getting my protein in because EVERYTHING I try makes me sick.
But yesterday I found MYOPLEX?? and its actually pretty good. Its
like 25 grams of protein per 11 ounces. I also ordered MORE samples
from bariatriceating.com and will try those when I get them. I know
the protein plays a big part in the weight loss but EVERYTHING I try
as far as shakes or bars comes right back up. Im on my second Myoplex
drink (one last night and one this morning) and so far so good so I
am keeping my fingers crossed. I told my hubby now that I found one I
seeem to be able to tolerate someone is gonna tell me its not good
for me or something...LOL My first mini goal was to be under 300..I
started at 365 and I am now to 303..So HOPEFULLY the protein will get
stuff started back up. I am excercising pretty regularly now. I say
pretty because my 3 yr old daughter and I have been sick so I have
missed a day here or there. I am up to 20 minutes on the exercise
bike and 20 minutes on the treadmill. Then I come home and do about
20 minutes of arm exercises with the arm weights and stuff...
Well just wanted to update everyone. Sorry I havent been responding
or posting but with my daughter and I sick its been pretty hectic
around here. Hope everyone is doing fine.
Congrats to everyone.
GOod luck to those who are having surgery soon.

Surgery and Insurance

2006-09-19 20:20:05

Hi,
I will quickly introduce myself. I am 31 years old, mother of three, 5' 5" and
weigh ( OH I hate to type this) 280.
I have been looking into surgery for a while now but have had NO luck getting my
insurance to cover the cost (or at least some). I honestly dont have any major
health issues and really just deal with fatigue. No high blood pressure, No
high cholestrol, No diabeties....
Though I have been denied by my insurance company many times I have never made
the step to appeal. Should I? I guess I am afraid I will get disappointed
again.... Do most insurances deny and it takes an appeal letter to get
approved??
Nezee

Hair Question....

2006-09-19 14:13:30

Hi! I am pre-op, approved but waiting for a date for surgery (they have
said it will probably be within the next 3 weeks.) My question is about
perms. I read on this list that you don't recommend having a perm
during the phase where your hair is falling out. That makes sense. But
what about getting one within the first couple months post-op before the
loss starts? I am in a catch-22. It is too soon for me to get another
perm now, but if I wait 7 months or more until the hair loss supposedly
stops, I'll look like a shaggy dog! What should I do? And when does
the hair loss usually start? Have any of you avoided the hair loss by
bulking up on extra protein? Thanks for the advice...now that this is a
reality for me, it is the little things that I have so many questions
about!!!

Re: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] Hair Question....

2006-09-19 05:19:17

Cindy,
I started losing my hair before i was two months out. i think the first time
you lose hair is from the surgery itself and the second time is from the
weight loss, that is only my opinion, my surgeon told me that it would help to
increase my protein but i have found not even that to really help. but truly i
think everyone is so different. why not get one before surgery??

Re: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] from ONE of the moderators

2006-09-18 03:01:40

Lori...
The problem here.. as I see it from reading and re reading all the
posts... is that
You privately emailed Mandy to take the Gelatin topic off list and email
Joan back and forth.
I for one was getting some interesting info and point of views about said
Gelatin.
My interpretation is that you Censored Mandy.... were you just tired of the
Gelatin?
How fair is that?
What's more.. you didn't post to the group to suggest it being taken off
list... but
sent her private email requesting so.
If you felt so strong in your convictions.. shouldn't it have been posted
to the group???
Many moderators step in if a topic is getting too heated and suggest that
the topic be closed...
or remind people to refocus.
You didn't do that.
Mandy was hurt and obviously felt singled out and Censored by what you
asked her to do?
Yes.. she was sarcastic... but she was angry and hurt.
In her anger.. she expressed her FEELINGS on the subject.
You showed NO Compassion... but wielded your power as moderator like a
sword to cut
her off at the knees.
Instead of forgiving her for becoming angry for something you initiated...
you punished her.
You took away her support.... left her hanging in the wind.
That Lori... was the real Crime here.

Re: blood pressure

2006-09-16 18:17:09

The new standards now out there because of the obesity problems have been
lowered.... As well as the BMI has been lowered for determining obesity. Now it
is becoming a trend anyone who has a B/P consistently of 130-140 over 80 or
higher are being put on medications. They find even a slightly high blood
pressure leads to higher risks of heart disease... Just keep an eye on your
pressures. usually someone who is concerned will start a log book. If you go
frequently to places where it can be done or your Dr's Office is willing to do
it whenever. keep a log of what you did before having it done. You can even
learn to do it yourself. Ask the Dr or nurses to teach you and go buy an
inexpensive blood pressure cuff and stethoscope which will run about 25
dollars...
Hope this info helps.........

RE: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] New PIcs added and update!

2006-09-16 02:22:46

Wow Crystal I can see a major difference already!!! You must be thrilled.
I don't know what to tell you about the shakes. I have the same problem. I
have tried them periodically to see if I can tolerate them and they always
come right back up. My pouch just won't do it. However I am getting 60
grams of protein a day and as long as you can do that you don't HAVE to
drink those shakes. I do try to get above 60 when I can but Somedays I am
doing good to get that in. So if the shakes continue to be a problem just
try to get your protein in via food. It is definitely tough at first but
now at 4 months post op I have very little trouble getting it in.

Let's everyone take a deep breath.......

2006-09-16 00:42:23

Now doesn't that feel better?
I don't know the details of what happened or why. Honestly it's not my
business. Let's remember that it's not easy to moderate a group this size
and give Lori a break. She's always nice and a reasonable person and let's
face we don't know the whole story.
I don't think it was because of gelatin. I believe what happened (I am
guessing here from the e-mails I read) that Lori sent a private e-mail to
Mandy asking her to consider taking the gelatin thread off line. Now some
of you may have been interested and others may not have been interested. I
suspect there were some who were annoyed by it (Let's face it there were
alot of them) and complained off-line to Lori and that is why she asked them
to consider moving it.
However Mandy took offense and sent a (In my humble opinion) scathing
response to Lori on-line. That was not appropriate. Don't get me wrong I
like Mandy but I personally felt she was out of line. I suspect it spiraled
from there off-line and that is why she was removed.
I do not understand about Joan because I thought she was "Being attacked"
rather than being an "attacker". Hopefully this can be reconciled and she
can come back.
But before another flame war breaks out let's all remember we are here to
support each other and that includes Lori.

Ahhhhh It certainly does feel better.
I'm with ya on the support issues. This is definitely a wonderful
support site and our faithful moderators have a difficult job on
their hands. One I know I personally couldn't commit to, so I do
commend them on their (especially Lori) committment.
Although I'm a hot/cold poster, I've been around for quite a while...
not as long as some, but certainly around much longer than most of
the active posters nowadays. One thing that I have seen over the
course of my time here is that the moderators try to make the best
decisions they can based on the good of the group as a whole. Their
decisions may not always be popular to a very small group of people,
but when you have a member list in the 1,000+ its going to be
impossible to please everyone. I trust that whatever decision our
moderators make will be best for the majoriy, NOT the minority, and I
am thankful for that.
(((Lori))) You've always been an encouraging and supportive person
and I personally know I can trust you to make the best decision...
you've had my back before and ref'd many a disagreement without being
harsh or rash. You're a blessing to have around and I admire your
dedication.

comments on Lori/Mandy deal (it's really not about the jell-o, folks)

2006-09-14 08:38:24

Hello, all,
I just thought I would post a note from a long-time lurker about the
whole Mandy/Lori flap of the last few days.
This wasn't about gelatin anymore. It was about someone basically
being asked to not continue a thread on the board that had already
been recently discussed and that person's responses with what was
perceived to be personal attacks. I have been around here awhile,
and I know that there have been occurrences in the past where things
got out of control in certain discussions. It is the moderator's
job to try to keep these situations in check and keep the entire
group focused on support for the members. Sometimes decisions have
to be made, and just like in any family (read the group name,
people), not everyone will be happy with the decision.
I have NEVER known Lori to do anything hurtful, spiteful, or just
plain mean to anyone in this group. I have never seen her censor a
person or topic without cause. She has largely done a wonderful,
patient, usually thankless job of moderating and managing everyone's
needs to vent, get help, post info, etc. She has never made a
decision rashly or without thought to the goals of the group as laid
down by the founders. I do know she sought out the opinion of at
least one other long-time poster before making her decision (and
probably others as well). We may not know the whole story, and we
probably never will. With that being said, I support the decision
Lori and the other moderators have made.
Remember, this is just one of many support groups around. While it
is basically open to anyone to join, it is still owned and
controlled by a group of individuals who have the right to run the
group the way they see fit. If you disagree, you are just as
welcome to leave as you are to stay. If you choose to leave, good
luck to you. But if you choose to stay, welcome. I have gotten a
huge wealth of info from this site and would personally hate to miss
out on future posts just because my feelings got hurt over a family
spat.
Lori, keep your chin up and keep up the good work. What you do is
incredibly helpful to a lot of people out there, even this ol' fat

Hi Sherri
Thanks for your message. Things are OK mostly.
I had my Lap bypass on 10th December 2003. I chose to go-it-alone.
There are no groups that I know of in AU that are active.
Some details:-
Pre-op 130kgs (286lbs)
now 107kgs (236lbs)
I guess it's only been a few weeks but I think I need to talk to
others who have done it. A little lonely (not family wise, just seem
to be out in the cold wise) at the moment, cause I can't seem to
interact with family members over meals etc.
Kind regards
Kevin

Re: Hair Question....

2006-09-13 17:49:11

Hi. I am almost 4 months post op and I started to lose my hair at
about 2 months. I have been using nioxin and I still see hair loss
but I would hate to test it and not use the nioxin and then possibly
lose even more than I am now. I have heard that when you first
start lossing it is probably from the medications from the surgery.
I too concentrate on my protein but am still losing. I think
everyone is different cause I have a friend that does not eat as
much protein as me and she is not losing any hair. Then I have seen
people who have needed to purchase a wig. I have thick hair so my
loss is not noticeable to anyone but me so far.
I think you should talk with your hair dresser and let her make a
professional opinion about it.
Good Luck

Hi to you all and thanks for your replies.
I had my bypass at a private hospital in Melbourne, Victoria. I had
to self fund it because my private insurance would not cover it.
My surgeon, Mr Ian Michell, is wonderful and highly respected here.
My treatment at Epworth private was second to none although my
procedure was memorable because I was not allowed any morphine after
the operation.
I just wish there were more people around me who have been through
the procedure, because I feel a little like robinson crusoe at the
moment. But I have no regrets, just need to focus on the good things
to come. I am the third patient to undergo a lap bypass in AU that I
know of, but no contact has been attempted with other patients as yet.
Kind regards
Kevin

RE: Mandy

2006-09-13 12:34:33

Dear all,
Mandy was NOT banned for speaking her mind or due to the topic of the
gelatin thread. She was banned for attacking someone (Lori, ONE of the
several moderators of this group) viciously and maliciously. THAT can't
be tolerated. All Lori did was privately ask Mandy to take her topic
private.
Writing someone privately to ask them to tone down, or stop posting
something inappropriate, or some other behavior that is problematic, is
perfectly acceptable and done all the time (I moderate 3 groups and
several of my friends are moderators as well. None of us (me or my
friends) moderate this group in any way, we are in New Jersey and
moderate out local groups, plus I am moderator of a group started in
Oregon, and another one in California) and in checking with my moderator
friends, I have learned that this is done all the time.
Anyway, Mandy took Lori's simple PRIVATE request, and, rather than
answer her privately where no conflict would have been witnessed in the
group and they could have dialoged about it, she brought it public.
Now, bringing it public would not have been so bad, but doing it
viciously and maliciously was what caused the problem.
We are free to say anything we want here. You can see that by the hot
feelings this banning has created. No one is being censored or asked to
stop. The group is minorly moderated and only for spam and personal
attacks, as far as I can tell.
I have to let you know that doing this kind of job (moderator) in a
group with almost 2,000 members, is no easy task. Lori and the other
moderators should be commended, not abused.
The reason Mandy was asked to take the conversation off list was due to
the ongoing, lengthy, verbose, research that she was posting, one after
the other, when it was of interest to only a handful of people. She was
not told not to discuss the topic, but rather, to address it to the few
of you who expressed an interest in it.
If you think about it, our surgeons, cross the board, have expressed the
absolute need for protein and fluids. I have polled over 200 people in
the past three weeks (since the thread started) and have not found one
person among them (my surgeons included) who have heard that gelatin is
a good source of protein for us. In fact, the research I have done in
the past week due to the prevalence of the topic, has shown me that
gelatin is NOT good source of protein for us. Yes, it's good for bones,
etc., due to the collagen, but the message that was starting to come
across in the postings when someone said she would not be trying the
gelatin, was that she was making a mistake. This was Mandy's opinion,
no one else's, and she was trying to convince this woman of the error of
her ways. That's when we had the deluge of gelatin research hitting the
board.
So, from what I can see, yes, a few people were interested in the topic,
but not so many that it had to be the ongoing theme of the month.
For Mandy to have reacted so violently to a simple suggestion of taking
the topic private, was just plain wrong. There is no way you can
convince me otherwise. This group was formed by Di and Sue as a
mechanism to help people who were new to the surgery, exploring their
options, and learning about the surgery, to have a place to go and ask
their questions and get help and support. People who stay post-op and
offer support are always welcome because their advice and information
from 'living it' are definitely invaluable. However, again, vicious and
malicious attacks, no matter how angry someone makes you, are not
acceptable, no matter who they come from.
Sorry if you disagree. I liked Mandy too, but I would have banned her
also if I was in a moderator position on this group. I don't accept
unacceptable behavior from anyone. At times, like in any family, there
will be disagreements. If you disagree with someone, do you attack them
or do you just express your disagreement in a civilized manner? Think
about that before giving Lori any more of a hard time about this. It's
all about attitude and Mandy's, when someone disagreed with her, was not
acceptable.
That's all I have to say on the subject.

Re: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] Surgery and Insurance

2006-09-11 20:15:55

I called my insurances everyday for 4 months we were on 1st names bases. I guess
they got sick of me. My hubbys insurance approved me the day before I went in
for surgery. But my insurance paid for it. I didn't have any real health
problems only my parents and grandparents were diabetic, and heart trouble. My
two brothers died of heart trouble at a early age. I even brought that to the
attention of the health proviers. I couldn't live like this anymore. Not being
able to walk get out of a chair. Taking a breath was hard for me with all my
weight. I was 290, 5' 6". If I rode my bike I was our of breath before I got out
of the driveway. Keep you head up. Let the insurance people know who you are. I
lost my head back in October to them which I am sorry for it. Just keep cool
about it when you talk to them. They will get mad that your calling everytime
you turn around. But tell them you just want to know. You need this surgery.
Some are understanding. I got a few of them and them are the
ones I called back and talked to.

Hi,
I will quickly introduce myself.
Should I? I guess I am afraid I will get disappointed
again.... Do most insurances deny and it takes an appeal letter to get
approved??

Ok to the moderators. As a owner of a group maybe you should be aware since i
was sued by a member for throwin someone off. If in your welcome email you dont
have no slander or liable remarks tolerated will cause removal. Also if you
dont want a particular thread then dont have open posts. The moderators can then
read each post before it goes to group

Why must we drop out?

2006-09-11 08:34:16

I have not been posting much, but read all posts. I need all the
information anyone has to give. Each of use have different needs or
wants. I'm pre-op and need to hear from post-op folks, how they are
doing, how they do it, be it the good or the bad. From pre-op, I
need to know how their progress from day to day is going, as I am in
the same boat. Info on foods, protein, vitamins, or any product
that may help is greatly appreciated. As a side bar, I also have
joint problems, can only walk short distances due to very bad
knees. So the Knox information was great! We all want to
be "normal" as being able to walk with ease, run and play with our
kids or grandkids or just a walk through the mall. So please, keep
all postings coming. If one disagrees, hit the delete key! Don't
know about all our members, but I need all the help I can get.
Thanks for listening (reading).

Wow...sued...what was the outcome? I'd be interested since I am also a
moderator for a group....boy it would be a major undertaking to moderate every
e-mail with the amount of posts for this group. In my group if I have a person
who is questionable I will moderate them specifically. A lot of the posting can
be too much at times, I just look at the first couple of lines or the subject
and just delete it. I know there are always two sides to the story so I won't
choose sides....I don't like confrontation either...live and let live...I know
that since my surgery I have been more irritable and vented in another group.
But I am still here, no alias...LOL...not going anywhere anytime soon...my
journey has just begun...hang in there, it only gets better!

ONE WEEK LEFT OF MY OLD LIFE WHAT DO I DO WITH IT?

2006-09-10 23:17:36

Jan 17, 2004 I have one week to go and I am so scared and worried
about the bills and the wellbeing of my childeren while I am getting
better. I want the surgery so bad so I can be a better mother to my
children and play and be happy with my self and be healthly. I so
wish my mother could see me now and I wish she was alive to see me
thin and happy. All I want is to live with out pain. Well 9 days and
counting...... My friend Kim Floyd is going to post for me while I
am in the hospital and after too. I will go home with my sister in
North Georgia to say for about 3 weeks we will see how I progress.
If I don't post to after my surgery please say a prayer for me.

Hi,
I am Candice from NJ.. looking into some sort of weightloss surgery.
I joined several groups and found something interesting.
This topic of Joan and Mandy was discussed on another board as well.
MaryK has started a group because she was banned from this one for
speaking in defense of Joan and Mandy and telling the moderator she
was wrong and she was leaving the group. I read the archives out of
curiousity and I am saying my hello and goodbye because i don't want
to be a part of a group where nobody can say thier opinion. No
thank you. I will find my support in other groups where the eject
button isn't pushed so easily.
Good luck to you all

pre op protein shakes

2006-09-09 20:06:47

Hi all. I'm looking for some advice, support and words of wisdom.
My surgeon wants all his preops to go on a 2 week liquid protein diet
immediately preop...shake at breakfast, shake for lunch, and shake
for dinner along with broth, water and sugar free jello. No coffee,
sodas or caffienated teas (crystal light is ok). Here's my
issue...My stomach is still the size of a football. I AM HUNGRY!!!!
I have no problem knowing that post op this will be my life for
awhile but I don't know if I can do this now. I only had 400
calories yesterday (used Unjury with milk). How did any of you who
had to adhere to this diet survive pre op???
Thanks,
Maureen

Re: ONE WEEK LEFT OF MY OLD LIFE WHAT DO I DO WITH IT?

2006-09-09 18:19:36

The truth? I would eat all the bread and sugar I could get for the
next two days. Probably not the best idea, but that's what I would
do. Then I would do induction low carbing for the next five or up
until I had to start cleaning out for the surgery. Okay, maybe one
day of sugar and bread. Any wonder why I weigh 424???
As for the bills, stuff happens all the time. People get sick and
can't work, laid off, whatever. I would call my debtors and tell
them I was having surgery (don't tell what kind, that's 'nunya') and
let them know things might be a little late. What are they gonna
do? They can't kill ya. Then forgeddaboudit. Spend time with the
kiddos.
You have to consider whatever hardships come with the surgery as an
investment in your 'new' life...one that will be so much better than
this one.
Prayers and hugs.

Hi Maureen
My surgeon asked me to do the exact same diet. I hsad the same trouble as
you - my tummy was still big and I was starving. Unfortunately I failed
miserable on that diet. I would do it one day, but totally blow it the next
day. I
gave up in the end - then did nothing but clear liquids the day before my
surgery. I am not telling you to do that of course LOL. Just know that I
sympathize with you.

Update on My husband

2006-09-08 18:13:49

Thanks to everyone for your support and prayers. I was able to talk
to my husband and he is doing better. He is still in Germany and
has undergone 2 surgeries and will need many more.....but he is
alive!!!!
God was watching out for him cause he had a piece of metal go
through his left side and protrude out the right....it did not hit
anything major and the dr said that if it would have been angled
just slightly that he would have died. He is pretty cut up and will
surgery on his eye probably from where the metal went in to it also
and also some skin grafts later after he has healed. But THANK GOD
he is alive and will be coming home when he recovers.
The Army has been wonderful...keeping me informed and they are going
to fly me to Walter Reed in Washington DC when my husband is stable
enough to fly. Hopefully that will be sometime this weekend or the
early part of next week.
I am drinking my fluids and taking my vitamins. I have only been
getting 2 or 3 meals down a day (instead of 5-6) but I have started
to drink atleast 2 protein drinks each day and am going to try to
drink 3 today. My strength is still there so I think I am getting
enough for now but I just need to get some sleep...good sound sleep
which I know will come within a day or two. I did get about 6 hours
of sleep last night but was tossing and turning.
Again, thanks for your support and prayers. And thanks to everyone
who has emailed me. I really appreciate it. This group is
wonderful and has been such a blessing to me. (even tho I do not
post often...I do read the posts)
God Bless
Shelley D

Celtic COnnie's Dr. slam

2006-09-07 20:13:42

Wow! that's pretty harsh, and not at all fair. Would you like it if someone
said you suck, because you *do* take medicaid? I don't think so . . . and it's
no more true than what you said.
No matter what you or anyone else thinks, Drs are business people and cannot
afford to work for free, or worse, to pay to work. And that is the situation
for most independent docs and Medicare/Medicaid.
Look for a teaching hospital near you, etc. If oyu haven't already, check
ObesityHelp.com. Or get a job for a little while at someplace like Home Depot.
They're 'sposed to have great insurance.
I understand your frustration, but slamming docs, especially to their patients
is *so* not helpful, or polite, or supportive. And everyone here has been
pretty helpful, polite and supportive to you.
And I've never heard of this doc before . . . I object on general principles.

Re: Burning Calories - question/Carol

2006-09-07 11:29:08

Thanks, Carol. Actually, I already am a member of the Century Club. My highest
weight, that I know of, was 330. After a couple years of yo-yoing on Atkins, my
initial consult weight was 324 in October '02. However, in the month prior to
that consult, and in the holidays following, although I dared not confirm it on
the scale, I KNOW I was back up to 330. And I was supposed to be DROPPING 20
lbs. for surgery...oh, what a painful memory. Thank God it is only a memory
now! I've been thinking about revising my stats to better reflect my journey,
and I think now is as good a time as any.
Thanks again!

Re: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] PATTI...To Maria

2006-09-06 23:22:59

Hello Maria!
Wow! I am just amazed by the kind of comments you have heard people say when
it comes to this surgery. Their minds are very small and you are above them.
I know it's difficult being around people who talk or think this way. It's
hard not to be influenced by their petty, uneducated and insensitive comments.
Try and surround yourself with positive people and ignore the idiotic, crazy
comments you hear "small minded" people say. They will continue to stay in
their own small world no matter what you do and they will always find someone
to talk about. Someday they themselves may mature, grow-up and expand their
world, but for now all you can do is take care yourself and how your react to
this kind of backward thinking. Don't let them influence you and how you feel
about yourself! Their comments are about themselves and their own insecurity
in life.
I don't have this quote exactly correct, but the gist goes like this: "Great
minds talk about ideas, average minds talk about things and small minds talk
about people." Those that think small are losing out on life and all the
wonderful people they could embrace and learn from. Let them stay where they
are.
Pull yourself out of that environment as much as you can and be proud of
what you are doing for yourself and your own physical health. People like this
may not ever understand. Try not to feel you have to explain or rationalize
what you are doing to them. They have not evolved enough as people to have the
capability to understand the world with any degree of depth.
I distinctly remember a time in my life when I knew I didn't want to be
around people like that. Once I got a glimpse of how people with depth
interacted,
I knew I wanted that for myself. It took many years to move in the direction
I wanted to go personally and develop a new network of friends who were
educated, interesting, and open-minded. I feel so much happier now. I am hoping
for the same for you, Maria.

30 seconds on a stationary bike wouldn't even give me enough time to push the

Katie - I need some stress relief please. ::language::

2006-09-06 04:21:11

Hi everyone,
I consider this group one of my first line of defense (support group) and I
hope you all don't mind. Right now I'm really shaky...I have been extremely
stressed the past week - all week - due to LTD (long term disability) and SSD
(social security disability) reviews, being reviewed for Section 8 - housing
help, and lastly also for chapter seven bankruptcy due to credit cards,
health/medical bills.
I am just going to come out and be sickening honest with you. Today I ate 5
1/2 donuts because of my fears/stresses. I do deep breathing, but not all the
time can I slow my breathing down. I have binged on more than that in the
past, and I am sick of it - and consequently - sick of me because of it. I want
to loose weight. I had bariatric surgery NOT to screw it all up by eating
this ~ quite honest ~ CRAP. ::sigh::
I was just wishing if any of you could give stress relief or relaxation
support techniques, but ones that are not too involved - ie: not getting in to
a
warm bubble bath? As much as I would love to, it is not happening due to the
fact I need and want to be able to curb this stress and hunger due to it, or
shopping if that happens! I either eat or shop due to stress/as a "release"
action/mechanism/what-have-you.
Also, am I the only one out there that binge eats like that when stressed?
Am I the only one that has a compulsion to eat and shop, and an addiction to
eat and shop, due to stress and trying to survive what seem insurmountable?
I thank you eveyone.
Take care, be well, much love.

Hi every one My name is Kristi I have been lurking for about a month now
reading your post's. I started this process about two months ago I have had all
the preliminary appointments and have been cleared for the surgery from all the
DR's. Now its the waiting game for insurance approval. My question is has any
one or dose any one know what the hell an organic condition is? this is
exactly how my exclusion/limitations is listed. Any loss, Expense or charge
which
results from weight control or treatment for obesity not caused by an organic
condition. I have asked the Insurance provider and nurses no one seems to be
able to give me a direct answer to this. So IM hoping someone out there can
help.
thank you Kristi

Re: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] organic condition

Hi Kristi....
I'm certainly no doctor, and dont pretend to even know enough about this to
answer, but could an "organic condition" have anything to do with bodily
organs? Organic weight gain versus weight gain by way of simply consuming too
much? Just a thought from "Dr. Becky".....lol!

anxiety issues I have suffered myself. I believe you can receive relief

With such heavy stress it can mess with your chemical balance. This is
one possibility.
