Why do I always feel sick, tired and run down?

2006-11-30 10:19:45

I had my bypass on 5/7/03 to date I have lost over a hundred pounds, I started
at 286 and now I way 175. I am happy with my weight loss, but I am also tired
of feeling run down. I have been having alot of stomach aches and severe
dizziness...the doctors can't seem to figure out what is going on. Has anyone
else had similar problems?

One More Protein Question....Thanks

2006-11-30 00:11:41

First of all thanks for all the help...you guys and gals are the best.
I am currently doing 2-3 shakes a day at 35 grams of protein per
shake....However, I just learned we can only absorb 30 grams at a time so I am
gonna have
to change that up some...What I need to know is how long do I need to wait
between shakes?
Thanks so much for your help!

That's what I wanted to hear Lori that u don't regret having the surgery. What
can I expect the day of surgery and the days following surgery? Did u run into
any complications or were u able to sail thru it like u would any other sugery.
2 of my brothers had diabetes and the same two had heart surgery, and that's
what I want to prevent. I have a beautiful little granddaughter that I would
love to see grow up and at the rate I am going I'm afraid of following in my
brother's footsteps. WHat about excerise, what kind do they want u to do? I
also have fibromyalgia which messes with your muscles and I have to be careful
when excerising. If u think of anything to add that u think might help those of
us considering surgery please let me know what they are. Also what can I expect
from my consultation with the surgeon what type tests will they run and all of
that stuff?

First of all, congratulations!!!!! By looking at your goal weight,
I'm going to assume you must be about as tall as I am. I was also a
28, but pushing into a 30 prior to surgery. I'm a size 14 now and am
not looking to get any smaller than a 10. I'd look like a hanger if
I went much lower. :) I'm 6' and my goal weight is 185. Don't worry
about the slow down, these bodies of ours do some crazy things here

B 12 Question

2006-11-28 06:59:27

My Dr. doesn't seem to think I need to take B12 or Protein just yet. But I
get weak through out the day. I upped my flintstone to 2 a day instead of
one. One thing he has stressed to me repeatedly is to listen to my body. I
think my is scream for B12 or protein.
Can someone tell where to get the B12 that dissolves under your tongue? And
how many to take a week/month?
My Dr. is new to the gastric bypass so I know a lot of the after care I
need to do for my self. If anyone has any links, hints, or tips please let
me know.

Personal Update

2006-11-25 22:34:42

Hi all,
Just wanted to sit down and write and let you all know that things are looking
up. I am in contact with some church friends who I knew when I went to another
Fellowship Bible Church who webcast their services online. I have asked and (I
believe granted) membership status even though I am attending the service
online. I wanted to thank all of you for standing with me conserning the issue
of my size and the issues conserning this church. I almost feel that if there
were enough people that would do so, you all could escort me into this church
making me feel like I had my own Secret Service detail just to get into a church
that discriminated me for my obeise problems and the fragrences that result from
this.In fact, a couple of you whave already said that you would have done just
that, and I wanteed to say thank you!
However, I am reminded that a church, no matter where it is, is NOT A NAME OR A
BUILDING. It is the people that are associated with a belief in a Power greater
than owerselves. In twelve step groups that Power is defined by the individual,
but in denominations it is defined on Biblical principles. I have chosen to
believe that as a result of my own experiences of faith over the years that it
is truely impossible to prove that there is ONE power, but more importantly a
multitude of smaller powers that constitute a POWER greater than anything we can
even conceive of.
To prove my point, one computer cannot do anything unless it was connected some
way to a series of other computers that can voice thoughts opinions and even
ideas. This is what the Internet is, and it is this Internet that is helping us
to communicate with each other. So, I believe that just on that basis that we
are a 'fellowship' of believers who can come together who can for a church based
on just our ideas of this Power that we all believe in. That just goes to show
how important I think all of you are to me.
OK, OK, I know what you all are saying. "Shut up, you are preaching!" I am no
minister or teacher, but I am just sharing with you all what I believe. So I
will stop for now. However, I do have an idea that I would like to just see if
you all would like to participate in. I want to have a group of people who just
want to share about things that have to do with this POWER GREATER than us. It
does not have to be God, or Christ, nut just a group that we can all share in
that is an expresion of our individual faith.
Yours in Friendship,
Jason

2006-11-25 12:57:43

Tricia,
There is a risk to every medical procedure. But the risk is very small and
the benefits of this surgery far out weight the risk. The surgery has saved my
life. I was a bigger risk for this surgery because of my age and medical
condition. I am 59 years old and weighed almost 400 lb., I am in a wheelchair, I
have heart problems, an aortic aneurysm, arthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic
bronical asthma, very bad spinal stenosis and spinal deterioration, and I WAS a
diabetic, and I HAD High blood pressure that was going to cause the aneurysm to
rupture. I know longer have diabetes or high blood pressure. I am even able to
get around some in the house now without my wheelchair. I was doomed without
the surgery and now I have hope for a better life and more time with my family.
I made the choice to take the chance and I went through it all with no
problems. I have not been sick at all. Even though I weighed almost 400# I was
still
able to have a LAP. I was only in the hospital 2 days and as of this day I
have lost 121 pounds.

RE: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] Biotin - Please Help

2006-11-25 03:39:34

I buy my Biotin shampoo and conditioner at a Health Food store. It costs
about $8 each. I also take Skin Hair and Nails supplement (that I bought at
GNC). I am 3.5 months out and have had minimal hair loss. It is important
to get enough protein besides using the Biotin products and Hair
supplements. Try adding one protein drink to your diet. And, remember,
this too shall pass. Your hair will regrow, usually in about three months.
Sometimes a short, stylish haircut will disguise the hair loss. I got one
and I love it. I have always had thin hair, and it makes me look as if I
have lots of volume. Good luck.

shake (with 4-6 oz water). I also like Proplete Gold Pineapple Vanilla or Mixed

Notes to several, note on carbs

2006-11-23 16:09:05

Crystal -
It's generally accepted that about 2 hours is the time to wait between shakes,
or in separating calcium/iron, etc. For max. absorption, that is. However, if
I am having cravings, or *need* something, I'll have anextra shake. I don't
care if I don't absorb it all, if it keeps me from going nuts, or eating sugar,
or something . . . :o)
Mimi -
30 grams of protein *per shake*, which should be drunk within 30 min. Letting
them sit around grows bacteria. I drink 6 shakes/day, each with 30 grams of
protein. 180 grams/day total . . .
Deb Dancer -
You parallel *me*? Are you mutant, too, or what? ;o) Hope things are going
well for you, personally, and it sounds like you're doing great weight loss
wise. I gotta cut some of the junk outta my diet. Too much in the way of carbs
lately . . . I actually ate noodles the other day! (with bad result, might I
say?)
To everyone else . . .
I am not really carbophobic. I can't eat them. If you want to eat fruit
everyday, and know that it has a lot of sugar, and 1 piece of fruit is prolly 4
servings . . . go ahead. It's your body, your choice, and your weight loss. I
just want you to know that volume-wise, any piece of fruit is prolly 4 servings,
that it has a lot of sugar, and that it may slow you down. OK, maybe I am
carbophobic, but it's because I feel the results everyday. I experience the ups
and down in blood sugars, the *BIG NAPS* (late dumping), the cravings later.
The funny thing is that while everyone thinks I'm a mutant, most people I talk
to experience at least some of these consequences. Somehow they think "it's the
surgery", or that it's worth it, or something. Or they don't connect the cause
and effect.
I try to get some carbs from veggies, the occasional 1/4 of an apple or a couple
of berries, or low carb bread. Eating noodles, rice, bread, etc. makes me dump,
and usually messes with my guts for a day or two. I am *very* sensitive to
simple carbs (sugars and white flour) - not my choice, but that's how it is. I
apparently always have been, and that is a large part of the reason I was fat.
And while I am convinced that the true experts in nutrition (research
scientists, people who actually do study nutrition, as opposed to learing the
Gov. pyramid, etc.) are proving everyday that it's the sugar we eat, and not the
fat, not everyone believes this. I do know that we malabsorb at least *some*
fat, and sugar is still absorbed from lips all the way to toilet. IMNHO, it's
better to have half a slice of heavy, whole grain bread, toasted, with butter
and SF jam (not the low sugar, really SF, like Harry & David's) than fruit.
More fiber, less carbs, *much* less sugar!
As always, all opinions expressed here are only my opinions. YMMV.
Rachel, who's on her way outside to enjoy a PNW "sunbreak"!
Rachel Hawkridge in Washington State.

Re: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] belly button question

2006-11-22 18:09:11

I have noticed this in myself. Especially since I had
my gallbladder surgery 2 years ago. I think dampness
from showers or whatever gets in there and because of
our large bellies, the area never really gets dry. I
clean mine out regularly with a q-tip and soap, then I
often use a q-tip and put desitin inside. This
prevents the moisture from staying and keeps it dry
and odor free. I think if you clean it with a q-tip
and then use neosporin for a bit until it clears up,
you should be fine.

2006-11-20 03:16:21

Carol,
That post was from me. If you haven't tried Curves, you can't
really say what you did. Spending 30 seconds on each station at
Curves DOES give you a very good aerobic workout in a 30 minute
time period....depending on how and what activity you are using on
the pads (rest stations between machines). Spending 30 minutes on
each piece of equipment gives you more of a chance to stress your
muscles out and an increased risk for tears and injury. I
understand that some people feel it isn't very much, but unless
you have previously tried it, you don't really know what it is
like. I'm sorry to disagree with you all on this subject, but even
though I work for them, I'd feel the same about this issue if I
didn't.

Stacy....
I saw my doctor an hour before surgery. This was basically a support meeting
and a review of what he was going to do. It was also a time for me to change my
mind. Fortunately, I was sooooo ready to get healthy.....I said let's get this
over with. Now 6 months post op....I would do it over in a New York minute.
stacy beck <myhumingbird@...

This is a PDA....and I send the e-mails on this little tiny keyboard...pretty
cool, huh!?! Yeah it has been awhile since I posted. I got so many e-mails so I
switched to Daily Digest, but am now back to individual e-mails. Wanted to get
back in talking in the group more. I had my surgery on October 31st and have
lost only 62 pounds. I lost faster at the beginning, but average about 3 pounds
a week, which I guess is ok...heck I didn't gain any during the holidays. Some
days I am more hungry than others. And I do walk at least 4 times a week. Want
to get a bike and start some more cardiovascular type activities to hopefully
increase the weight loss. Well, look forward to talking to everyone soon!

RE: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] Re; gelatin ad nauseam

2006-11-18 23:37:17

Hi Mandy, before I comment, I want to notice you've lost 7# since I last
saw!!!! That is so wonderful. It jumped out at me. That's my inspiration
for when I get closer to goal. Good for you!
I do apologize if the subject of gelatin seemed not appropriate to some at
this site, but I really see no difference in discussing that, or vitamins
(which kind, chewable, etc. etc. etc), or the constant finds, likes &
dislikes of protein shakes, and how to prepare them. At this point I have
no interest in protein shakes as it isn't recommended by my nutritionist,
but I wholeheartedly know it's of interest to others. I generally skip over
those, as I haven't needed them, and have no input to help anyone.
I do want to thank Mandy for the interest and time put into shedding some
light on a subject I knew little about. Isn't that part of the purpose of
this site? To support, help, learn, etc.

Sheryl, you were W/C bound 8 months ago, and now can do 30 minutes of

doing remarkably. I applaud you. Way to go! Don't concentrate on your
weight as much as your health returning and your physical
conditioning improving drastically!!!!

La Fraun...
There is a variety of information available thru gastricbypassgroups@....
You will also find this group is more then knowledgable on the subject because
many of us have had they surgery. Like you...we all researched until we thought
we knew everything there was to know about the surgery. The, guess what...we
researched even more. We posted to this site and asked all the questions we
could think of. I can only speak for myself, but I received tons of valuable
and informative informaation, not to mention the love and support. Just keep
posting and asking away. I'm sure you will find answers to all your questions.

2006-11-17 19:00:35

Hi!
I'm drinking one a day to add protein to my diet. If it's really cold, I
like the taste OK. I tried 3 other kinds before settling on this one.
I have a question about it: Can I count all the protein listed on the can
or do I have to half it because it's in liquid form?

my worst fear come true

2006-11-17 06:19:30

I am so terribly upset.....I have researched this surgery and looked
forward to it for over 2 years. I went to the surgeon and he said I
am a great candidate. Now, my insurance won't pay because it is a pre-
existing condition. I have called and spoke with them and they say
there is nothing more they can do for me. I feel awful. Has anyone
else had to go through this? This surgery is so expensive, there is
NO WAY i could ever have it, unless it were covered by insurance.
I really need some encouragement....

Calcium for SouthernAngels

Best, and least expensive calcium I've found is Super Osteo Enhance (also called
Super Calcium) from Vitalady.com. It's calcium citrate (what we must use), plus
Vit. D3, boron and ipriflavone for better absorption.
The cheapest sublingual B12 I've found is at Trader Joe's - it's a B12, B6, and
folic acid tab. If no Trader Joe's near you, VitaLady has a B12 tab, also.

I am back

2006-11-15 04:31:02

Well,
I guess that I cannot keep a good thing away for too long. I had to come back to
these groupos because 1) you know what it is like to go through this painful
disability called obesity, and 2) you all offer the support that I need right
now. The truth is that I may be headed closer to weight loss surgery than I
thought. But there is still a long way to go. In fact, I find myself at an
awkward place now because I am feeling like every step I take toward improvement
I have to take two steps back, I was told today (Monday) not to go back to the
church that I was visiting for the past 2 weeks because with my obesity comes a
certain amount of oder that had been somewhat noticeable. The minister sayed
that until I had the surgery that I can participate online, but that was it.
In addition, it turns out that I may have been unintentionally running away some
of my health care aids because of the attention that is needed to help care for
me. Namely this includes helping to clean the folds under my skin where the oder
is comming from (with the fungus and all.) So now I am back here retreating
under the safety of the online support groups because I feel so alone right now,
and I have no idea what to do anymore!
Yours in Weight Loss Surgery,
Jason

2006-11-14 02:50:18

You have no idea how this touched me and what perfect timing it
was. I just joined this group a few days ago and have enjoyed it
very much ever since. Just yesterday, my children (all 3 in high
school) came home from school hysterical. They had just found out
that their best friend and her mother had been murdered by the
boyfriend. We live in a very small community ( mostly farmers and
country type folk) and things like this are unheard of. I had been
praying that God would give me wisdom as to how to deal with this
and help my children through such a scarey time. Thank you, god
bless each of youa nd please read that post. I send it on to you
this way... God bless

2006-11-12 23:00:59

I have always wantedto ask ever since I have been coming in here,
did anyone else go through Bariatric Treatment Centers of America to
have theirs done? I am curious because some of my instructions are
so dramatically different form what I am hearing in here. I took
more than 8 weeks to get to regular foods, started with clear
liquids, then full liquids, pureed (yuch!!!), etc. Anyone else do
that? I have to ask because of the lady that was so new post op and
eating red meat!!! I just want to know if I ate baby food for
nothing!!! lol

Re: Does anyone eat this??

2006-11-12 14:35:58

I have found that if I read labels very carefully, I don'[t have to
use the "name brand" products. They are so expenasive. I mean, the
way we must all eat now is more expensive than before. Bologna is
cheaper that turkey! So, I have made it a mission to find products
that fit what I need to eat at good prices. I have lots of hints if
you would like!

Has Anyone Heard of This??? Concerned

2006-11-10 11:25:30

Hi All,
I am going on 4 months post op and I received a call last night from
my father in law. He was calling to tell me that his neice, who had
the surgery over 2 years ago, is in the hospital and they are only
giving her a 10% chance to survive. He did not know all the details
but said that her intestines are twisted and that she has bile
throughout her body. And also that she has alot of infection and
her stomache is decaying.
I have never heard of this complication. I was wondering if anyone
else has and if there is something we can do to avoid this
happening? I do not want to scare anyone...just want to find out
information to help ease my mind.
Thanks

Re: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] Has Anyone Heard of This??? Concerned

2006-11-10 01:01:37

I haven't ever heard of this particular problem but I do know that any time
there is a twist, leak or puncture of the bowel it is very serious because of e
coli and other bacteria can cause septis(blood infection) which can kill you.
My 4 year old daughter had a VP shunt(it drains from the brain extra fluid) she
was 26 week preemie. Anyhow that shunt migrated from her stomach and thru her
bowel she had periontinitis (stomach infection) septis and a bowel hole and she
is only 27 pds, with CP and other medical problems. She pulled thru and was
only in the hospital for 12 days after surgery. We knew that she was in pain it
wasn't ignorable. Did the girl ignore signs that something was wrong? I
understand it is EXTREMELY painful and usually a big clue!

hi ms soon to be post-op! i chanced upon a nice poem by Jean Wilson, hope u
like it:
"NO MORE 'SMALLING UP' OF ME
No more meekly saying 'yes'
when my heart is screaming 'no'
No more taming of my feelings
so my power won't show
No more hiding my exuberance
from disapproving eyes
No more watering down myself
so my spirit won't rise
No more 'smalling up' of me
pretending I'm not here
No more running from the music
and the spotlight's glare
No more living in this prison
barricaded by my fears
No more turning and retreating
in the face of new frontiers
Even as I am speaking
I am taking shape & form
harnessing my powers
like a gathering storm
There's no obstacle so bold
as to dare stand in my way
I am taking back my life
& I am doing it today."

They told me that for the first 3 weeks...liquid.

will be 8 weeks before adding regular food back.
She also told me to get a baby spoon for eating, that it would help

Diabetes
High Blood Pressure
Arthritis
Low Blood Oxygenation During Sleep (Not really Apnea but my oxygenation
would fall to as low as 75 while I was sleeping so I had to use oxygen when
I slept)
Shortness of Breath
Fluid Build Up in my Knee Joints
I feel like I am forgetting something but that's all I can think of right
now.
I am 4 months post op (Disposed of 83 pounds so far) and I take no
medication for any of the above anymore. I have been off insulin for about
a month. Still not as good as I would like but very very close and good
enough that I don't have to do shots anymore. I got rid of the oxygen tank
about a month after surgery. That was soooo nice!!!
You gotta love TriCare!!!! They just took my daughter off once. No idea
why...just removed her. Took me about 4 months to get them to put her back
on.

Dear Merdine,
I was nauseous from cooking smells for almost a month at the beginning.
Many people in my support group were as well. You are not alone. The
good news is it passes. Hang in there. It will get better. I couldn't
stand cooking for my family because the smells would make me want to
puke, but it definitely got better.

Re: 30y/o female from fla i had my gbs dec 19 1998 n need some tips

I'm sorry your gaining weight back. I'm sure thats something we all
fear. It sounds like you've done pretty good though to have kept it
off since 1998. I would also recommend you read the 'pouch rules
for dummies' like Shannon recommended. The other thing is there a
support group in your area and do you still have contact with your
dr or nutrionist. I would check with your insurance and talk to
your doctor and see if you can see a nutrionist to get back on
track. Even your doctor should be able to help you. Even if you
have to pay for the appt yourself its worth it to get back on
track. Obviously you are capable of losing weight since you lost so
much before. Just PLEASE don't intentionally purge. My dr said
that is one of the quickest ways to get a hernia.
Keep us posted and take care!

Bridget....
BOTH Mandy and Joan have been butted from this site. I'm really angry as both
these women contributed very helpful information and were extremely supportive.
I hope Lori sees the harm of her decision and allows them both to particapate in
the future.
Bridget Northam <bridgetnortham@...
I guess I missed something. I was confused about whether it was
Joan or Mandy that is off the board and I see its Mandy. I went
back to Wednesday's posts to see what it was about and it is no
longer there. I've found this board very supportive and I wish
people would be a little more easygoing and if you don't like what
someone says just delete it but on the other hand we shouldn't
ridicule each other. This is supposed to be a SUPPORT group so I'm
trusting the moderator made the right decision. What a shame this
kind of stuff happens!

I agree wholeheartedly!! Wednesday's post from Mandi was vicious and
unprovoked. Why torment a group of sensitive and perceptive
people? What about respect, what about class, what about MANNERS? SHe wnt way
overboard.

OMG... please do NOT tell me Joan and Mandy were removed from this group
because of
their passion or lack of passion for Geletin and the benefits or non
exisitant benefits in consuming
said Geletin????
Gee.. I am afraid to speak my mind now.. for fear I will be the next one

I do NOT support this decision... IF the removal was over Geletin!

basically, the gastric bypass family is a support group, therefore
there is zero tolerance of personal attacks.
anyone who feels compelled to lash out, pounce on, abuse & harass
another member will be banned, period.
the past couple of days around here have been an episode of the
Twillight Zone, lol. it would be counterproductive to name names.
there is more than one moderator on here, & any & all decisions are
made TOGETHER.
my good (personal, in-person, face-to-face) friends, Di & Sue,
entrusted us & we've been w/ the GBF since the summer of 2002.
the group is about progress, positivity, encouragement, empowerment,
empathy, civilized sharing....
any contrasting points of view are welcome.

curves for women/Steph

2006-11-03 11:46:54

as far as ppl making a big deal about you only being on a machine for 30
seconds....30 seconds is not the WHOLE work out. the curves i've been to ur on
the machine for 30 sec. then u switch and u go in a complete circle 3 or 4 times

OH so how about since you work for them maybe suggest they offer those doing the
surgery to give a free trial memebership!!!!!!!!!!!! I am kidding but would be
nice!!!
Tanya <Leeds@...
Carol,
That post was from me.
understand that some people feel it isn't very much, but unless
you have previously tried it, you don't really know what it is
like. I'm sorry to disagree with you all on this subject, but even
though I work for them, I'd feel the same about this issue if I
didn't.

Carol,
I'm sorry that they don't offer a trial membership. I didn't know that
anyone did that at all. When I lived in Tomball I called several places
and asked about that kind of thing and never was offered a trial
membership. I'd be interested to know who does offer that. Also you do
get to have a free workout (at least at our facility) to see if you like
it or whatnot.
Another thing to keep in mind is that the contract you sign is not hard
to get out of if you decide to join. So if after a month or whatever you
decide it isn't working out for you then you just have to give them
notice in writing and maybe pay a little bit (like $10) and that's it.
It's very simple. As far as the workout goes, it is 30 seconds at each
machine (usually anywhere between 8 and 12 machines) and you go around
the circuit 3 times. I hope that helps clear up the confusion on that
issue :).

Question about losing hair- How much do you lose???

2006-11-02 11:16:20

I'm following the posts about hari loss with great interest. When
post-ops say they are losing hair, do you mean you lose enough to
need a wig, or is it thining hair. It is what it is, but I just
want to be prepared.
Thanks,

I'm finally post-op!

2006-11-02 09:55:18

Hello everyone!
I am finally reporting back after coming home from the hospital last week. I
spent 17
days there and I am still recuperating! I guess that's not too much to expect
from an
open RNY on a guy my size. Anyway, Dr. Keith Millikan (Rush-Presbyterian-St.
Luke's
in Chicago, which I think is now called Rush University Medical Hospital) did a
thoroughly excellent job in all respects, putting together a new stomach that is
responding beautifully and an incision that has been healing up the same. He's
also a
man who takes a lot of time with his patients, obviously cares a lot even though
he is
very busy, and is good-natured to boot. I'll suggest seeing him anytime.
Anyway, I had a lot of things to say that wouldn't fit here, so I put them all
on this
webpage: http://home.comcast.net/~deppitybob/wls_experience.html. Read it if you
like, and if you have any comments, put them here and I'll be happy to read
them!
Thanks for all the great info and advice I have gotten from this group!

Re: Question about losing hair- How much do you lose???

2006-11-01 01:21:52

Well, i am at the phase that i am losing hair so i can only speak for
myself. I try and pull the loose strands out of my hair about 3 or 4
times a day, and i usually get about 20 strands of hair at a time...
this has been happening for about a month and i am not bald yet. my
answer is yes, it is just thinnning and i have been assured that my
hair will rejuvenate itself...so for now i am just waiting and hoping
most of the gray falls out...
