I've taken the liquid post-op nutritional requirements recommended by my
doctor for 4 weeks and put them in gram/percentage form to see how everything
lays
out. I put it in www.fitday.com to make the calculations easy. How does
this compare to the rest of you?
Total Calories - 1140
Fat - 31 grams - 25%
Carbs - 123 grams - 44%
Protein - 85 grams - 31%
2% Milk - 5 cups/day
Carnation Instant Breakfast, no sugar added - 5 servings/day
Pro Mod Protein Powder - 5 scoops/day
Sugar free popcicles/jell-o, broth are optional and not added to these totals.

Dear Sheryl,
I can so relate to you. At my highest point, I was 515 lbs. I was also
wheelchair bound (as recently as 6 months ago). My entire life has
radically changed due to this surgery. It has truly given me a new life
and I'm turning 50 next month, so I've got a lot to look forward to. I
had my surgery a year and a half ago, at 386 lbs., and I'm still losing
weight. I know, if you hang in there and do what needs to be done, you
will continue to lose and will achieve your dream. Just hang onto your
goal and good luck to you.

the protein issue. I was telling him
about how we were all being told different number of grams per day needed
and he said he would mail me an article that was in the Journal of Medicine
that would explain it better to me. I had forgotten about it but it arrived
today. It's four pages long so I am not even going to type it out but here
is the point that I believe explains why we keep hearing different numbers.
This information comes from Stanford Hospital-Department of Nutritional
Medicine.
The average American requires 0.36 grams of high quality protein (such as
chicken, fish, tofu and legumes) per pound of body weight. This amount is
necessary to maintain lean muscle mass and avoid "muscle wasting". An
extremely active person or an "athlete" needs additional protein (also high
quality) and should strive to take in quantities equal to 0.43 grams per
pound of body weight.
So I guess depending on your body weight the amount of protein needed per
day should be different for each of us.

I know that this is commonly accepted . . . but our stomachs have no pylorus

The thiamine deficiency produces a thinning of the myelin sheath, which makes
the symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis. Other Bvite deficiencies can cause similar

They can check your Bs, but it's not really necessary. They're all water

another with my last calcium dose of the day. Folic acid is really important in
the absorption of these two vital minerals. And two of the most common problems
with bypass patients is anemia and osteoporosis (iron deficiency and calcium
deficiency).
Also, a B12 deficiency causes pernicious anemia. Iron deficiency related to B12
shortage.

My hubby and I do nothing for Valentines Day every year. Maybe it's our age
or something I don't know. But about a week ago I told him "I have no idea
what to get your for Valentine's Day so here is my thought".."There is a new
day spa opening up in a couple of weeks not too far from home...let's go
there together and you get a massage and I will get something done"...He
said "Sounds wonderful to me"...so that was the extent of Valentines Day for
us.
We do this same thing over Birthday's and anniversaries and Christmas as
well. Don't ask me why. I guess maybe because if I feel like buying him a

Now don't anyone think I am knocking or poo pooing doing things for these

Yes, I was able to drink that much a week after surgery. It includes 5 cups
of milk along with the added powder. I split the drinks into 5 servings a day
where I sit and sip over a period of time. I also drink 32 - 64 oz of water
throughout the day in-between. These are all part of our recommendations and
the bariatric team is happy with how I am doing. I see online that each

Patti -
I use very low sugar protein drinks from VitaLady.com. My surgeon (who has 16
years of WLS exp., done over 3000 surgeries himself, is one of the few qualified
to *teach* bariatric surgery by ASBS) has a couple of guidelines for us . . .
1. NO MILK, NO SUGAR - we are supposed to keep our per meal sugar to 6 grams.
2. Minimum of 4 (30 grams of *protein*) shakes/day for even his proximals.
3. A full range of specified vites.
My regular (use every day) proteins include Fuzzy Navel by Nectar, which is a
whey isolate (30 grams of protein, 0 sugars in 1.5 scoops); Pure Whey Stack by
Champion Nutrition (Chocolate) which is a whey concentrate (30 grams of protein,
about 6 grams sugars (from whey concentrate, mostly) in 1.5 scoops); and
ProPlete Gold by LaBrada (also a concentrate, stats similar to STack). I do
6/day. Each has about 130 calories per shake. I also eat 2 to 4 times per day,
about 1 oz. by volume of dense protein, with some added veg.
This is my plan - I was doing 4-5 shakes/day until the 6 month mark, when I
upped my intake to 6/day. And my weight loss speeded up at that point. I've
lost 140 lbs, I'm 11 months out, still losing rapidly (8-10 lbs/month), and
have lots of energy, good color, good skin recovery. I've gone from a size 28
jeans on morning of surgery to size 12 today, which are rapidly getting baggy.
3X or 4X shirts, now small to medium. Life is *goooooood*! :o)

I beg to differ, Mary . . . depending on the type of rice, and how much it is
cooked *it can & does swell*. I can only assume that you don't have a lot of
experience with short grain and sticky rices.
Rice is best served al dente, as is pasta. Unfortunately, both of these will
*swell*, if eaten al dente. Sushi rice is particularly bothersome, as it is
served al dente, and is short grained . . .
Basmati rice is better, well cooked. Next are the other longer grained rices,
also well cooked.
Also, be aware that many starches can be stuffed down in large amounts with no
painful consequences, other than slowed weight loss, or gain. YMMV. I eat
protein first, because (in part) it temporarily blocks stoma, producing an
earlier feeling of full. I can eat carbs all day and not feel full, as the
carbs are soft enough to go thru the pouch without stopping. This is why they
were included in your soft foods plan.
You are, of course, always welcome to prove me wrong . . . eat some dense
protein, then eat rice that *hasn't* been cooked to death. Rice that is firm to
bite, not crunchy, just chewy. DOn't call an ambulance when you feel like
you're having a heart attack. Just go walk around outside, and wait for 15-20
min. Or throw up. It helps if, when you start getting foamy, you spit out the
foam, instead of swallowing. Swallowing saliva makes the problem worse.

Rice does not expand in your stomach unless it is raw. That is why the
birds
die is because the raw rice absorbs moisture and then it swells up,
but what
we eat is cooked and therefore it does not swell when eaten. Rice was
included in my soft food stage.

I do. My moods are so bad when I start to lose more weight. I hate myself the
most when I do it. But you just can't help it. Anything will set it off. I have
a girl at work tells everyone I had this surgery cause I didn't want to pull
myself from the table. I have to work with her everyday. I didn't do anything to
her. I feel like I have to walk on egg shells all the time at work or I am going
to exploded. So I come home and take it out on the one I love the most. I keep
telling them I am sorry. It is a everyday crises. Week-ends are the best. I am
away from ppl and I stay home in my shell.

IT IS SOOO NORMAL TO BE SCARED GIRL. I WAS TERRIFEID RIGHT UP UNTIL THE

FUGURED IF HE THOUGHT IT WAS TIME TO GO I WOULD GO NO MATTER WHERE I WAS,
OPERATING TABLE, CAR, CROSSING THE STREET, HEART ATTACK, IF YOU ARE MEANT TO GO
THAT
DAY YOU WILL GO. I ALSO KNEW THAT I WAS DOING THIS FOR MY KIDS TO GIVE THEM A
BETTER LIFE. I WAS A LAZY 378 POUND MOTHER WHO WAS VERY DEPRESSED AND NEVER
WANTED TO DO ANYTHING BECUASE OF MY WEIGHT. I LOST 140 POUNDS AND AM NOT AT
GOAL BUT FEEL AWESOME AND GO EVERYWHERE AND DO EVERYTHING WITH MY KIDS AND ALL
OUR LIVES HAVE GOTTEN SO MUCH BETTER. WE ARE EVEN EXPECTING BABY #4 IN JULY. I
HAVE NOT GAINED ALOT BEING PREGO, JUST 5 POUNDS, AND I FEEL BETTER THAN EVER.
THIS IS THE SMALLEST I HAVE EVER BEEN WHILE PREGNANT. THE BENEFITS SURE ARE
WORTH THE RISK. I ALSO HAD IT IN MY HEAD THAT IF FOR SOME REASON I DID DIE, I
WOULD NEVER OF KNOWN IT RIGHT. BUT ANY SURGERY IS A RISK, EVEN THE CSECTIONS YOU
AHVE HAD. A LADY TOLD ME HER C SECTIONS WERE WORSE THAT HER WLS AND SHE HAS
GONE ON TO AHVE A TUMMY TUCK TOO. MY NEXT GOAL AFTER I LOSE THE REST OF MY

I had been losing 8-10 lbs/month for several months, and it went up to 10-11
lbs/month. I don't weigh weekly, wouldn't know . . .
Not like a huge jump, but considering that at 6 months, many are slowing down .

In my second week of post-op from open RNY w/chole. Still losing
quickly. Getting somewhat bored of diet looking for options. Have
had some diet soda. Sipped the soda after it was opened for probably
15 minutes or so. I enjoy soda, but don't think I want to deal with
the bloated feeling like that to often. I know I've got to increase
my protien intake and am looking forward later this week to getting
to the gym for my post-op walking. No nausea so far and my system
tells me when I'm low on water. All in all, I'm feeling good,
there's room for improvement, but I still have that drive. Thanks to
everone here for the encouragement. In case anyone cares, I posted a
small collage in the pictures folder (Ray W). My next pictures will
be at 100 days post op, hoping for -80 lbs by that time (May 5).
For those of you contemplating the surgery, read, research, and
attend the support groups. But most importantly, ASK THAT QUESTION,
whatever it is, if you don't ask it you may never find the answer to
it. As for me, even though I'm just 14 days post, I would do it
again.
Best of Luck,

What do you want us to call ya, woman? Did I get this wrong, or do you have 2
names? :o)
I don't think 33 lbs in 10 weeks is bad, but I think you could bump it up, by .
. .
1. Dropping the milk, juices - both are very high in sugars, no real food
value.
2. Adding protein shakes - very low to no sugar ones, available at
Vitalady.com.
3. Cutting your simple carbs intake. Try taking your egg and chicken salad on
a lettuce leaf, or celery stix, or cucumber slices, instead. I eat the topping
from a slice of pizz, but rarely eat any crust. Add some veggies, in place of
the simple carbs.
Simple carbs - sugars (even from milk, fruit & juice) will make you hungrier in
a couple of hours. They will make you crave later. It takes a couple of days
(usually 3) to detox, and get past the cravings, but then you'll be much better
off.
Protein shakes will provide instantly available fuel for your body to burn fat,
and to build muscle. I do 6/day, but recommend that proximals and medials do
3-4/day. Make them so that you get 30 grams of protein (not powder) per shake.
Good luck - I think you'll be happier, healthier with the above plan . . . :o)

If you are military and I am assuming that you are since you have Tricare I
would just call and go to the lab. It is a simple blood test and they
should be able to call it in.
I am also on Tricare and what they mean when they say they only cover
surgery is that they will not cover Jenny Craig and stuff like that. If you
want a referral to a dietician to go on a medically supervised diet you can
get that from your PCM. Usually you have to go to the base. They usually
have one there.
Tricare paid for everything for my surgery and only took me about three
weeks to get approved. Course I had numerous co-morbidities and had been on
a supervised weight loss program for 3 years with no success.

I am 7 months postop and have been able to eat just about anything I
want for a couple of months. I just can't eat very much. It
concerns me too about getting back some old habits like grazing all
evening, eating some sweets and such, but the saving grace is that I
am still slowly losing weight. I walk several times each week, and
I guess that helps. I am concerned, as you, what will happen a year
from now. Maybe if i start gaining I can break the bad habits
again. I am only about 6 lbs from my goal weight, so I guess I will
know fairly soon what to expect. If I keep losing, I guess I will
continue eating as I have lately. If I start gaining, it will be
time for reprogramming. I feel your lack of pain. I have only
gotten a little sick a few times from eating too much or too
quickly, but have never dumped. It seems too weird though to
complain about not dumping!

Hello All!
I got home from surgery today. There were some complications so I stayed a
few extra days - 6 total. It feels so good to be in my home and in my own
environment. I had a whirlwind of thoughts, feelings and emotions throughout
this
experience. As I waited in pre-op I asked the nurse if I could change my
mind and she said I could. But I knew this wouldn't get easier by postponing
the
date. It's a scary thing for anyone going through major abdominal surgery.
I wasn't suprised to see they had a box of Kleenex in each room...I'm sure
they have seen many people cry as they entered the unknown.
Even though this has been physically and emotionally difficult, I am not
sorry. I know that my body was not going to allow itself to be normal weight on
its own, no matter how hard I worked on it. I feel thankful that there is a
tool such as this that will help improve my overall health. I have been crying
everyday several times, but try to sit with my emotions and let them happen.
I seem to be tolerating almost the same amount of fluid I was drinking
pre-op, which surprises me. But I am sipping throughout the day rather than
having
it for planned meals so its spread out. I'm drinking my Carnation Instant
Breakfast/Protein Mix, lots of water and have had sugar free Jell-O, popcicles
and
bouillon. I started my vitamins - Flinstone Chewables without any ill
effects. And I don't think I will need any pain meds. But I will get some to
have
on hand.
I have been so fortunate to have supportive friends visit me to help me
process through my experience. And a special thank you to my Angel, LORI who
has
been an extraordinary friend. Today she stopped at the store to pick up what I
needed. We spend many hours on the phone over the past 2 weeks, she spend 7
hours at the hospital with my family, and today we met for the first time. We
are aware of meeting each other about 15 years ago, but those memories were
faint.
I don't think anyone can totally emotionally prepare themselves for this
journey. The depth of the experience comes only when you are living it. I can
learn from others who have had the surgery, listen to my educators at the
hospital and read anything I can get my hands on. But the physical and
emotional
aspects are ours alone each with their own uniqueness. I have a vision of my
life transforming in drastic ways that I can only dream about now. I am looking
forward to the journey. And I don't mean just the aspect of losing weight.
I am already growing as a human being and get excited about what is over the
next horizon.
Honestly, when I was in the hospital I felt so much pain I didn't know how I
was going to get through it. I felt so out of control with tubes and IV's all
over my body and depending on nurses to take care of me. It's a helpless
feeling. But these 6 days have had it's own individual journey. I started with
being demanding and feeling that all nurses were inadequate to understanding
that they were there for me. I cried with a nurse as I left to apologize to
her. Even tho she didn't see that in me, I needed to say it for myself. To
admit when I have wronged someone.
This is actually a journal entry for myself. Thank you for listening!

I don't want anyone to think I am being a smart alec because I am asking
this question in complete sincerity.
For those who were nervous and those who are getting ready for surgery and
are nervous......what are you nervous about? I mean is it about what will
life be like after surgery or is it more what if something goes wrong?
I ask because I was not nervous at all. I wasn't concerned about anything
going wrong. Maybe I should have been. I don't even know why I wasn't. I
had complete faith in my doctor. But I am sure the majority of us do or we
wouldn't be letting them cut into our bodies.
I had researched alot and I was fairly certain I had a pretty good idea what
things were going to be like post op. OK so for me they were worse than I
expected but they have gotten better. All in all I would say as to what and
how much I can eat things have turned out maybe even a bit better than I was
expecting.
I remember one of the Nurse's asking me in preop if I was nervous and if I
needed "anything". I said "Yeah I need to get healthy. Let's get this show
on the road". She said "with that attitude you will do well".
But I just never had a nervous moment about it. Well at least once I made
the decision. Of course I thought about it for years before I actually
talked to the doctor. Maybe I just got rid of the nervous stuff in advance.

I am not surprised by this move by Humana. They have never been
very WLS-friendly...I had Humana when I first tried to get my
surgery. It was thru a new company policy (a different company had
just purchased my employer, and the new insurance was Humana). All
the info I had stated the procedure was covered. I went thru
initial consultations no problem. Then, after two months of the
process, I was informed by Humana the WLS was NOT covered after
all. Despite the fact I was able to provide all the documentation I
had showing my group policy numbers and that it was supposedly
covered, they insisted on appeal it was a direct exclusion in my
policy. They first tried to say I was sent the wrong policy info,
then changed their story to say it was part of the contract that
employees of my company would still be covered under the provisions
of the old insurance policy for 6 months despite the fact it was a
different insurance provider altogether. It was a load of BS.
Because I had some serious comorbidities, I couldn't fight them like
I should. I had to have the surgery.
One thing, tho...I had a lot of complications that required
hospitalization for 3 months. Because I was initially discharged 4
days after the surgery then returned two days later, it was shown as
a separate hospital stay and was billed as such...not as follow-up
to WLS. They wound up covering me for a whole lot more money than
if they had covered the surgery (about $180,000 in fact!)

It is hard for me to participate in the group chats. I live in Houston,
don't get off of work till at 5:30 (sometimes) and don't get home until
6:30 p.m. and then have to fix supper for my son and myself and work on
homework. Then days like today, I probably won't even get finished at
work until 8:00 p.m. Tuesdays is cub scouts, Wednesdays is
church....it's not that I am trying to hold out on this particular
"sharing of the minds", it's just my schedule doesn't permit it....I
believe that is probably most people's issues in this not working...just

Hi Brian,
My name is Linda. I live in California. I guess it would depend on where you
live. Kaiser here uses Pacific Bariatric in San Diego. I had my surgery on
December 12, 2003 and have lost 45 pounds thusfar. I found one book at
wlscenter.com. The lady that wrote it got into the business after her surgery
and now has a website with a newsletter that I subscribe to and goes all over
the country speaking about the surgery and subsequent lifestyle. Her name is
Barbara Thompson. The book really didn't give me any more information than I have
been able to get from the internet support groups and doing a lot of research,
mostly on the internet. I do subscribe to 2 magazines that are very good. One
you can get from obesityhelp.com-a fabulous resource in itself. The other is WLS
Lifestyles. You can search the internet and you will have to send them a check
or use Paypal, but the magazine is still worth the trouble of not being able to
pay directly online.
If you are in California, you may also need to go through a 12-week course that
Kaiser has to prepare you for what to expect. I highly recommend attending.
Because of all the research I did, I felt so prepared. I knew more than most of
the people who were getting the surgery at the same time, and for me, most
importantly, I was ready mentally. You need to prepare yourself for the
lifestyle change. It is major, but if you can get your head into it, then you
will be less likely to have head hunger after the surgery. I don't get hungry or
have cravings anymore because I know it would be all in my head. You're really
not supposed to feel real hunger for almost a year. I do know when I need to eat
and I have had Big Eyes and had to reel myself in, but I realize that it's my
mental state and try to deal with it. I also recommend seeing a therapist that
you feel comfortable with. It took me three times to find a person who was
positive and treated me with respect. I don't see her that much now, but I had
someone who I could talk to that would help me get my feelings organized and
help me through it.
I wish you all the best. Kaiser is great. Use all the resources that they have
to your advantage.
Regards,
Linda

Hi all,
Over the past week I've strayed a little from the "soft" 6wk diet.
I've had refried beans (mashed well) 1/2 cup... scrambled egg with
some melted cheddar cheese (1 egg and 2 table spoons of shredded
cheese). I'm still maintaining my protien shakes and cottage cheese
with small chunked fruit. Lots of water. I've also tried about a
half-cup of home made chili with beans and little hamburger. All of
which is staying down thankfully. I'm stretching these meals over
45min to an hour. Just need to know some of your opinions. Am I way
off base here. I know when I'm full. I keep all portions to one-half
cup and stretch them out over time. The last thing I want to do is
ruin my pouch.
Thanks,
Ray

I plan to decaffeinated myself prior to surgery, because even tho my
MD says I can have coffee, I am sure I cannot have all the powdered
creamer I put in it! I cannot drink it with one teaspoon of creamer,
so I might as well give it up along with the other things I will be
saying goodbye to! janet
What do you know ....IT'S ME!!!!!!!!!!!
Just 5 months and 1 Week and I have disposed of 107 pounds!!!!!! I am just
31-41 pounds from goal (125-115) and down to a size 12 (pretty close to a
10) from a 22!!!
I was shocked when I stepped on the scale this morning. I have not been
checking regularly and at last check I had two pounds to go. Now I am 7
over. I have been amazed by how fast this weight has come off of my body.
I feel like a completely different person some days. Happier I guess.
Definitely healthier. More a peace than I can remember being.
Oh and I have decided I am no longer going to use the words "lost" or
"losing" anymore. Both seem to infer that I might one day "find" something
again. Which I will not. So from now on when I use the word "disposed" you
will all know why.

from what i gather, the lower the inital BMI, the more gradual the w l. hang in
there, everything will fall into place, esp since you're
doing an awesome amount of legwork.

Karon, Wednesday a.m., huh?! Every time I read that someone is close, I get
goose bumps. It's exciting! I do hope your blood pressure drops. Maybe
the medication will do the trick. That was the only pill they had me
continue after the surgery. I even took it the morning of the surgery.

Andrea, Glad you're getting tested. If you didn't fast for the test

Hi
For me I am not afraid or Dying or the life changes afterwards but
complications after surgery. Or something coming up at the last minute to
postpone
surgery. Like the flu or a cold... The doctor said it is perfectly normal. It
isn't
that I don't trust my doctor because I do but of things that can go wrong
afterwards like a leak or ect. I had gallbladder surgery 6 weeks ago and with
that I was in soo much pain I just wanted it out but was nervous then too. I
just want it over with... Roxanne

Hi everyone,
I am having my surgery on Thursday, Jan 22, at Geprge Washington University
Hospital in Washington, DC. Dr Brody in my surgeon. I am having a Lap RNY. I
have a couple of questions-
I am wondering about is I am suppost to travel to CA on Feb 29th for a week for
work. Anyone out there traveled that soon after surgery? If so, how was the
experience, any advice?
I am looking to hire a nursing assistant (CNA) for a week or two after my
surgery. Does anyone on this list know of one who I could use? If I could find
someone who has had this procedure it would be super.

Salmon, great source of protein...I use a recipe my granny used...it
is...
1 can of Salmon
2 eggs
some onion(adjust to taste...I use a lot)
some fresh garlic
crumbled up crackers(I use the low fat crackers with non salted tops)
make patties out of them, use a little oil...I tried Pam, but they
just get stuck to the pan...so just a very little oil...
We dip them in ketchup in our house...
Enjoy...

I was wondering how fast and how long it can take to get authorized
by the insurance companies. I understand all insurances are
different, but has anyone had the authorization pass through quickly?
Dear Shannon,
I find that a lot of my behaviors and the way I eat parallel Rachel H. a
lot. I don't weigh frequently either, and usually only when I see my
doctors. I had occasion to see my doctor twice in the past two weeks.
I had boosted my protein as well recently and I'm one and a half years
out from my surgery. Just from adding one protein shake a day to my
regular routine, I've lost 7 additional pounds in two weeks.
live each day like it's your last... love like you've never been hurt...

Thanks Brenda, I've forwarded the information.
Dear Mimi,
I know you wrote Rachel to question her about the 30 grams of protein,
but it's 30 grams of protein per MEAL, not per day. The best tasting
protein powder I've found is made by Champion and is called Pure Stack
Whey. It comes in five flavors: Chocolate, Vanilla, Strawberry,
Cocoa-moccachino and Banana-dream. It works out fairly reasonably on
the internet at about $24 (plus shipping) for a 5 lb. jug which lasts
for about 40 shakes or so. My personal favorite is the chocolate, but I
really like them all. They mix easily (I don't even use a blender).
You can add fruit if you like (I don't) or Davinci syrups and have
variety every day in addition to whatever food you are eating.
Dear Crystal,
(I think it was you but I could be wrong, who said you were adding extra
powder to your shakes and getting 87 grams or so per shake? If not you,
I'm addressing this to the person who is doing that): There is no
incentive to adding extra powder to a shake if you're bringing the
protein amount up over 30 grams per sitting. Unless you are an extre
