Amy, I was 29 when I had the surgery, and I have two young children 8
and 4, I needed help with my son for the first couple of days, with
making his meals and of course bathing and such. I would recommend
that you have someone to help you for the first week or so. You will
be tired, your body is recovering from major surgery and it is the
little things that people do to help...By week two I was feeling
pretty good and could do the things my son needed. It is also
important to have someone around because my doctor would not let me
drive for two weeks after surgery and housework was not allowed during
that time(this is just my doc, though)...I have to say all the help I
did get helped me recover faster.

Today I went to the chiropractor for a miserable lower back pain. He
had to take x-rays and then he showed them to me. He showed me my
staples!!! I could see, from the posterior position, the staples on
my stomache. It was amazing!!! Then it hit me! Last month at the
court house I kept setting off the metal detector. They couldn't
figure out where the beeping was coming from!!!! Now I know!! Maybe
we should have little ID cards for metal detectors????
I learned something new about my body and thought it was actually
quite amusing!

Hello everyone,
Its been awhile since I've posted but thought I would send another
since my surgery is near. Very near actually. I'm having Lap RnY on
Friday 1/30. Anyone else have this date? I was originally scheduled
on 2/6 but they had a cancellation and bumped me up a week which was
great and scary all at the same time. I'm having good and bad
days. I'm scared, nervous, excited, optimistic all at the same time
if that's possible. I've never had major surgery before so I don't
know what to expect. I know I'll be fine but I think it's just the
fear of the unknown that is getting to me. And to top it off we've
had horrible weather here in PA I haven't been able to make it to
work, at least there I had something to distract my thoughts...lol.
Then I'm thinking, I'm going nutz after a day snowed in how am I
going to be after being I'm here for 2 weeks. I'll be climbing the
walls...LOL! My poor roommate!!! Well, thanks for listening! I'll
post more once I home from surgery, I've been reading the posts here
for about 8 months now, think it's time I came out of the woodwork so

I've been getting dizzy spells lately. I'm getting all my
protein and my required diet in. I drink 8 cups of water a
day, 1.5 protein shakes, one cup of diluted juice, and have
3 2-oz meals of high protein foods like chicken, yogurt, or
scrambled eggs with a little salt. I don't stray from
protein foods and don't cheat the diet. Plus I take my 3
Flintstone vitamins every day and my b-12 on Monday and
Friday.
I don't know what's going on. I'll just be sitting at my
desk, sipping water, and suddenly get really dizzy. This
morning I thought I was going to faint so I put my head
down.
Anyone have any idea why this is happening? I go to the
doc for my second post-op appt on Monday so I'll ask him.
But I was hoping someone here would have some insight also.
I felt better laying on the couch last night with my feet

Hi
I'll try to make a long story short- ,I am just soo frustrated today. My
surgeon sent in the papers to my Insurance Company BCBS Blue Choice POS 3 weeks
ago. I have been calling each week to check on what has been going on. Let me
tell you this is a very hard time for me as I have a hard time waiting. I am soo
scared I will be denied! When I called last week the insurance Company told
me that they had not received a request for surgery yet! But they had received
a request for an upper GI and 2 requests for office visits from my surgeon
which where approved 1-20-04. They said they believed my surgeon's office made a
mistake by sending 2 office call requests instead of a surgery request. I
called my surgeons office and talked to the lady in charge of this. I was very
nice but she was snotty insisting she sent in the correct information and that
was that. NO checking. I thanked her and let it go at that. When I called my
insurance company yesterday to check, they said THAT FOR SURE THEY DON 'T HAVE
IT! So I tried to call the person back at my surgeons office. I left a message
but I don't hear back. I called again this morning and don't hear back. The
insurance company said to have my primary doctor call and check with the
insurance department so I did. They called the direct person in charge and were
told
they never received it. So I call back the surgeon's office. I tried to
explain to the person that answered the phone what happened and that I had left
several messages for the person in charge of insurance but had never heard back.
I
honestly was very nice. They said very snippy "that the person was very busy
and that she was the only one that could help me and if I didn't like it that
I could find a new surgeon!" I thought this was very uncalled for. I
understand that she maybe busy- I was just asking for 5 minutes of her time for
her to
re fax the needed information to the insurance company. I just feel soo
deflated that I waited 3 weeks for nothing and now it will be another month to 6
weeks before I hear anything again. Them being soo rude to me has me thinking
what happens if I have problems after surgery and will they treat me like
this???
What should I do next if I don't hear back from her again? Am I over
reacting? Anybody else have Blue Choice POS or had this happen to them? Thanks

--Nicole,
I have Aetna in Texas. Here the insurance company has two weeks to
acknowledge that they have received the paperwork and then two more
weeks to approve or deny. That may vary with each state and the
requirement they put on the insurance company. Aetna is very rigid
about documentation here. Good luck. I should be hearing something
in the next two weeks about my (hopefully) approval.
Have a great weekend!

I feel your pain about the stricture. I had one too and I suffered for 4
months and through 4 endoscopies to have my stoma stretched (2 scheduled and 2
done when I was blocked) and it never stayed stretched. I finally had to have
a revision of my RNY. I vomitted and generally couldnt eat much of anything
for those 4 months. I was so miserable and I kept telling myself 'surely this
isnt normal!' Now, 8 months after my original RNY and 4 months after the
revision, things are 200% better. I can eat almost completely normally. Eating
was 100% improved within just a week after my second surgery. There is life
after the stricture. I remember thinking I would never be ok again, but I am
and you will be too. Hang in there!

It sounds like your doing everything just fine with your eating,

I am just trying to get back in the working world but no cloths to do it in.
Ok I am 4 months out. I have been taking the Biotin that was suggested to
help prevent hair loss. Either it's not working or I suppose it could be
working and I am losing less than I would have been otherwise. However, if
that's the case I would be bald by now.
My hair is falling out by the handfuls on a daily basis. Luckily I have
really thick hair so although it is thinner it's not noticeable yet.
I was hoping someone who started losing their hair and was able to stop the
loss could share what they did. I know we have gone over this before so
sorry folks.
Also I am scheduled to get a perm on Friday. I was wondering if I should
cancel. Has anyone gotten a perm when their hair was already falling out?
Did it make it worse?

I don't want to gain this weight back like I have with other things
I've tried. I feel soooo good now. I look better and I am having fun

was a mean person) I'm not constantly depressed now. I actually look

I've always told people what was on my mind but I was so afraid that
people would call me fat and laugh at me because of it, but now...I
STILL let people know how I'm feeling when they piss me off WITHOUT
being scared that they might laugh and call me fat. Talk about self
confidence! Geez!!! I feel so confident now!! I know you all
understand exactly what I'm trying to say. I still need to lose
another 34 pound to reach my goal of 145, and boy do I need a tummy
tuck (REALLY REALLY BAD!!!) and a boob lift, but I'll get to that in
due time. I've gone from a size 26/28 pants to a size 14-16 pants and
the 16's are getting real loose. I haven't been in a size 14 since
high school some ??? years ago!! LOLOLOL (now you didn't think I was
going to tattle on myself about how long it's been since I've seen the

Dear Dee,
I had to jump in here the minute I read that you don't eat that much
protein "because it slows the weight loss" -- This is absolutely false.
The way we have to eat, following this surgery, is PROTEIN FIRST AND
FOREMOST before anything else. If you don't eat enough protein, you
will stagger and stall your weight loss. According to the majority (but
not all) surgeons out there, we need to eat minimally 60 grams of
protein, if not more, per day in order to enhance the weight loss. Only
after getting in the requisite protein at each meal (whether through
food or shakes), should we move on to salad/veggies and fruit (if
there's still room). Good luck to you.

**** actually, it's not. It's worse. You see, calcium carbonate must be in
contact with stomach acid for 1 hour before it can be absorbed at all. Since
yours goes immediately to gut, it doesn't have any time to sit and stew in
stomach acid. And the carbonate makes kidney stones. Calcium citrate is
recommended for all people with low stomach acid levels (elderly, people on
Protonix, Prilosec, Zantac, Nexium, etc.)
****Twin Labs makes a chewable that is tasty. Orange sweetart flavor, kinda.
Not near as much sugar as Viactiv. I think I saw a caramelly calcium citrate in
Trader Joes. I use Vitalady.com's Super Calcium, which can be pulled apart
(capsules), and dumped into protein drinks or other drinks. No taste.

WOWEE...I can hardly believe that my scale said 160 lbs!!! But,
it did! :) I had my surgery on August 4, 2003 and started out
in a size 26/28...now I can wear a size 14. :) This is so
awesome, it feels unreal...like a dream! I am 5' 1" and want to
weigh approx. 120-125 lbs...gosh I have never been this small as
an adult!

Hi Candi
hope this helps you i also was losing hair a lot but it has calm down now all
i did was cut back on washing it i went from every day to every other day and it
really did help i did this for a month and just really drank an extra shake a
day, not sure that i would get a perm. Good luck it will slow down
Pat
Candi Read <candiread@...

You can get whey protein in all kinds or variations and flavors at Vitalady.com.
She has about 85 different shakes, all of which can be sampled for smalll cost.
This saves you buying a huge jug, only to find that you don't like it.
I like Nectar's Fuzzy Navel (more like juice than shake), Pure Whey Stack in
Choc. (tastes like melted fudgsicle) Cocoa Mochachino (tastes mildly like a
latte - choc, coffee, milk), Proplete Gold in mixed Berry, Pineapple Vanilla
(These are milky fruit-flavored shakes with little bits of fruit in 'em). Each
is about $30 jar, but the Stack is 5 lb, while the others are 2 lb. Needless to
say, Stack is my staple. I do 6 shakes/day, and 4-5 of them are STack.
I also use Vanilla Stack and SciFit Plain (mixed 1/2 & 1/2) as a base, to which
I add DaVInci SF syrups, usually Toasted Hazelnut, EggNog or English Toffee.
Chai Tea SF syrup is also good added to this base.
When you try whey shakes, of any brand, use a straw - the smell affects the
taste buds, and even tho I don't think they smell bad, they taste better with
straw. Mix with water *only*, add ice if desired. YOu can add SF Koolaid, SF
Tang, SF anything, but no milk, juice. Too much sugar.
I use a scoop and 1/2 of any of the above to total about 30 grams of
protein/shake. It's easier that way. Start with about 4 oz water, add a few
ice cubes, taste more water if necessary. Try blending the Stack with the ice
and water for Frosty-like treat. I (very) occasioanlly add a few small slices
of flozen banana or a teaspoonful of pnut butter to a blended shake.
Hope this helps - Oh, and VitaLady.com ships to Boonieville and the back of
beyond. <g

OK now I am not arguing but I thought the reason we needed all of that
protein was so that we fed our muscles. That if we didn't take in the
requisite number of grams we would start to burn muscle weight instead of
fat weight. I have never been told anything about it increases our weight
loss.

Just wondering, how the heck do you get rid of that white
film that forms on your tongue when drinking protein
shakes? I thought of putting a lemon in my water so the
citrus could cut through it, does that work? Even my
toothpaste isn't strong enough and it's so gross to feel

either.
By the way, thanks so much for the well wishes. My pain is

hey everyone... i had my surgery 1/12/04. the surgery went great i had no
complications.
the worst thing was the epideral they about killed me. the dr also fixed a
hernia and took my gallbladder while doing the surgery. i was sore but it wasnt
bad it was more of a sore feeling than just really hurting. the epidural even
though it hurt was a great help. they left the tube in my nose until 1/14/04
which i didnt like to much but it was to help suck the stuff that was in my
stomach. i started eating liquids the same day. 1/15/04 they ran an upper gi
with the nasty drink not the white drink as usual. they than let me have
purree. and the dr came in about 6:30 pm and i asked if i could go home and he
said yes which was great. the car ride home was a little sore but not that bad.
i still cant seem to get in protien. dont know what to eat. i quess i have to
find some things because i have to do this purree for 5 weeks. soreness has
been getting better day by day and today 1/19/04 one week from surgery i am only
a little sore. any one have ideas on good protien
powders that i can add to my food or something good i can have seperately.

I use Tums. Chewable Tums. That is what they told me to take for Calcium. They
work great at the end of the day. I take what I am lacking in Calcium at night
before going to bed. It works fine for me. I was told to count protein, Calcium,
and my water in take. That is how I am losing the weight.

Just wanted to say good morning to all. I am just starting the whole
process of getting approved for LAP-RNY. I go to my first seminar
tonight to get everything started. I finally made my mind up to have
the surgery, after my mom, sister and a friend all had the Open RNY.
All three of them are doing great. Which has made me a little
jealous, but I know that I can only be happy for them since they are
living happier and healthier lives.
Hopefully I don't run into to many problems getting approved, but I
know that it can be a long process. SO, I'm not getting my hopes up
right away.
I hope to continue reading and posting very helpful information!!!!

Hey Joan, I add it to my spaghetti(in place of meat), I also sautee
it with bell peppers, onions, garlic and add some cheese to top it off
(for protein)...oh the wonders of veggies...i made some lasagne with
spaghetti sqaush, really good, but spaghetti sqaush is kind of
expensive...what did you do to the zucchini before you added it to
your lasagne? wow all this talk about veggies is making me want to be
creative...i bought some frozen artichoke hearts at trader joe's the
other day...some low fat italian dressing and dumped them both in a
bowl...viola! marinated(low fat) artichoke hearts...and oh so good! i
shy away from pasta, so i am thinking about spaghetti sqaush(non
pasta) pasta salad...egg plant is also good for lasagne layers...let
me know if you have any ideas to pass my way...

Dear Group,
Something intresting is happening. As you may or may not know, I have a
personal assistant come to my home twice a week. Lately she has helped me make
sure
that my fold under my stomach is clean. For the first few times that she has
done this she reported that I was somewhat firm, however lately it seems that
I have been losing even though I am looking the same. This indicates to me at
least that I am beginning to be somewhat flabby. So hopefully when I see about
the WLS I am also going to see about taking up some of this skin.

Just wanted to check in and say that time is flying! I can't
believe that I have only 48 days to go. I'm going through all kinds
of feelings. Lots of worries and nerves and also excitment at
getting another chance at an active life.
I'm supposed to be losing a little weight prior to surgery, but
frankly, that is not happening. I know this isn't common, but I
just have to say that I CAN lose a little. I really have been
letting my nerves rule my eating (hello, that's why I'm hear in the
first place), but I know I can put a little more effort into eating
better.
Thanks for listening.....

I am sooooo darn mad!!!!
I have been so frustrated that I am still in a 16. Now granted the 16 is
getting pretty big but I just could not squeeze into the 14 I have.
Well today we were going to see My in-laws and take them to lunch. David
suggested that I try on the new slacks I just bought at Wal-Mart. I told
him they would not fit as they are a 14. He said he thought they would
since my 16's were so loose. I said no they won't I just tried on the jeans
a couple of days ago and they don't fit. They are actually loose on my legs
and tukus but will not close in the front. He said "Just try"...so of
course I relented and tried them on. I will be damned but no only do they
fit......they are loose!!!! I was like how can that be? Must be just a
generous size. well I bought 2 pairs of 14's so I tried the other pair on
since it is a different maker. SAME THING!!!!! Then I tried the jeans
on.....still not happening. Finally I took out the size 12 jeans that I
also had hanging in the closet. I buttoned and zipped both pairs and guess
what???????? The Lee jeans (Size 14) were smaller than the size 12. Well
no wonder I could not get them on!!!!!
Now I bought all of these jeans from a thrift store and I thought maybe they
mis-marked them so I checked the tag. Nope they say 14. I thought..."hmmmm
maybe they are petites?"...checked the tag again...nope it says regular.
So then I got out the tape measure....The "14's" are 1 inch smaller in the
waist than the 12's. Granted the 12's are Guess.
I think it is a conspiracy!!!! Lee Jeans is trying to make us feel fatter
than we are!!!!
So I am a size 14!!!!!! and look out 12's I am coming home soon!!!!!!!
OK now I feel so much better!!!!

hi hunny. the sublingual B12's are tablets that melt under the
tongue, i tried the liquid form that's supposedly absorbed through
the capillaries there. @ my 9 month labs, the levels were normal,
but low, so i immediately started shots, 1st @ my doc's, but now my

Candi
Maria,
I've thought about the very same thing! What do you say to people? I have
told many people that I am having gastric bypass surgery, so that part isn't a
secret. But I know I will be bombarded by a lot of questions as I loose
weight as the months go by. I look at this surgery as a way to save my health
and
my life not as something to focus my life and conversations on. To some
people I may just say, "I've made some major lifestyle changes" and that's all
they
need to know. I think that we need to be sensitive to our own needs and not
feel we have to tell everyone the entire story. As time goes on I think you
will know what you feel comfortable saying to different people. You may feel
comfortable telling more to some and less to others. Wishing you the best in
your journey....

Hi Amy,
My daughters were 4 years old and 20 months old when I had open
surgery 11/18/03. My mom stayed with my husband and kids while I
was inpatient and for 2 weeks after I got home. I could have
handled things after about a week though. Please be sure you have
some help for at least a week. If you don't have family near by,
you may want to think about hiring a high school kid to help out
daily after school and weekends. They could baby sit, clean, do
laundry, etc. It would be money well spent.
Best of luck,

could tell me some of your experiences being pregnant after the

I have PCOS. And the dr's say it is caused from my weight. So they

Bonnie,
This can still be some swelling from the inside due to surgery. This
will eventually fade, of course, everyone is different. Mine finally is
gone and I'm 9 month's down the road. There is only a little pooch now,
but I was also concerned and my surgeon's PA told me this is common and
give it 6-8 month's for all the swelling and more healing to be done. I
was also told that eve though on the outside it looks healed, down deep,
there are still tissues that can take close to a year to mend and heal.
Everyone is differnt though.
After I was allowed to abdomenal exercises, it was around 6 month's, is
when I noticed things started to go down..... I think it was closer to
7-8 month's really.
I hope this helps.

I got approved in 48 hrs with Aetna PPO. You just have to really

Letter from a therapist I worked with for 8 years, and a very

Hi Chasta, I had gastric Bypass about 15 months ago and did not make it to
gaol yet but will later, I am currently pregnant with my 4th child, I have twins
and a single but have had years of infertility myself. I am on another group
for people who are pregnant or trying to get pregnant after gastric bypass and
let me tell you, there are many, many pregnant women on that group who have
PCOS and are pregnant. Some are early postop and pregnant because they never
thought they would get pregnant so soon. I am going to give you the name of this
I am new here. This is my first time. I am 29 yrs old and 5'2 and I
had a lap gastric bypass 4 months ago and I have only lost 40 pounds.
I started out at 246 and now I am 206. I hav not lose anything in 1
month. I have went from a size 26 to a 16. Has the weight stopped or
will it pick back up again? I walk everyday and ride my bike 2 miles
a day and I eat the right food. Thanks
Ok, I'm not sure if anyone else has this problem or not....
I'm just about 1 yr. post op after a Roux-en Y and I'm down 100
pounds. I've had trouble since before Thanksgiving with a feeling
that I have bladder infection or something. Feels like I always
have to go to the restroom but then only go a small amount, happens
even 1/2 hour after I just went. I also recently have problems with
even using a tampon, doesn't feel like there's enough room for one.
Relations with my husband are also uncomfortable in certain
positions. I've also started having periods every 2 weeks!
I was put on antibiotics (did nothing) and have back and forth to
Dr. 4 times. Had a pelvic ultrasound that showed some fibroids on
the cervix and in the uterus but largest was 13 mm. so not big
enough to cause pressure on the bladder. Was sent to a urologist
today and he didn't exam me, see any test results or anything but
told me that my problem was due to lot of weight loss in the past
year and that I've lost about 5 pounds of fat that was surrounding
the uterus so without that it's not "cushioning" any longer and when
it presses against my bladder, it makes me feel like I always have
to go. He said that I should wait 6 months to a year and see if
things "settle down". He feels that things will tone up and be
better then and that I shouldn't expect to have everything be normal
after having this type of surgery. (I'm still upset at him, can you
tell?)
In my mind, I keep thinking that things have "fallen" and need
tightened up or something but I can't seem to find anyone that
thinks what I'm dealing with is abnormal. It feels like I'm having
bladder spasms several times a day and it's very uncomfortable. He
says that women who lose alot of weight have extra estrogen and that
can make you stop having periods. My problem is not that I'm
stopping having periods, it's that I have them much more frequently.
Help, anybody else having these kind of problems? Thanks, MJ
Hi
I am finally approved!! The insurance company kept telling me that they
never received my paperwork. Even today they said they hadn't get the papers-
then
I find out from the surgeon the approval came through 2 days ago ! Had me all
upset there for a while! I will have an exact surgery date Monday but it will
be before the end of February. Thanks Roxanne

--- Yes. This has happened to me. I have to go to the bathroom all
the time and when I get there nothing happens. I have started having
a monthly every 2 wks. The doctors said it was because of my sudden
weight loss.

Yes, to your question. I buy chewable calcium citrate through the
vitamin shoppe on line. They are very reasonable & the taste is
great. They are citrus flavoured.
I cook my spagetti squash over the stove in about 1/2 inch of water. I
cook it for bout 10 minutes on each side covered on med-low heat. it
turns out really good. A tip for after it's cooked.... after you scrape
it gently out of the shell, put it into a large strainer then have a pot
of hot water on hand to dip them in real quick while in the strainer if
possible. It'll seperate them a bit more and get them strings nice and
hot!
Don't forget to try some zuccini shavings as noodles also, it's
awesome!!!!
I had another idea for lasagna noodle substitute as I was cooking tofu
lastnight with my eggplant, I realized I could cut some really thin
strips of this tofu and use it as noodles for lasagna! Dang!!!
Don't forget about those 3 carb 12 gram protien pasta that can be found
at some nutrition stores around different areas. It's really good for
making baked ziti for the family and they'll never know the difference.
I discovered how to make low carb bread pudding.... use the low carb
bread!!! It's very good and only 7 carbs a slice, 7 grams protien....
so, with the eggs, it would make a great low carb high protien dessert.
it's something I'd take in small doses though, since it is bread. We
really don't want to depend on bread as we're changing our old habits
into good healthy habits and choices.
Ok, I'm done..... Hugs to all!
Susan
wonderful progress, hunny!!!

I believe your experience is pretty normal for WLS patients. Everything
will sag, inside and out! I too experienced my periods being 2 weeks
long every 2 weeks. This lasted for several month's. Now my periods
are normal but I still am getting the 'heavy' down there feeling like
things are falling out, etc. My bladder feels like it could get
tightened up higher and everything else along with it could use a face
lift. Yep, things are spasming, lower back pain from the excess front
skin too.
It seems like you are doing the right things by going to the doctor
though. Keep it all documented because when you are ready, you will
have a great chance of getting the insurance to pay for reconstructive
surgery because of the medical necessity you are now experiencing and
will continue to do so. I already began my documenting with my PCP.
She knows my back is hurting, I occasionally have stress incontenance
after it had gone away for a while... now it' back cus of all the
sagging. I'm getting more cramping too.
Anyhow, I hope this helps and by the way.... you are doing incredible!!!
Keep up the good work.
Susan
