thankfully, the very little hair loss i had has all grown back. imo,
everyone's system will react differently to the shock of surg & rapid
w l. i've met posties who say they "did everything right", yet became
scalpies anyway. one friend became anemic immediately after surg.
etc etc. what's important is to continue to be pro-active, get labs,
find the supps that agree w/ u, etc.

Vickie....Thank you so much. I am going to print this off and fax it to the
surgeons office. I`ll also try to get a copy of our policy. Thank you so very
much. I hate to quit here.

Still pre op. Just wondering where to get a baby food mill? Found
one on ebay. Not sure if there is more than one kind. I'd like to
get a vitamix blender, but they are so pricey. I will have to eat
baby food for months from the way my dietitian talks. Sounds like
many of you have gone to "normal" food not too long after surgery.
Thanks.
Alice,
I spoke with my step-daughter who works at Cigna and she hasn't heard a
thing about them not covering it ALL. She did say, that most insurances
show it as an exclusion, but it also depends on your POLICY. She works in
the claims department for HMO's and POS's. She said that even though it
shows on your insurance as an exclusion, your PCP should refer you to a
specialist or surgeon and request a letter of medical necessity. Your
surgeon should work with you on this. She also said that you may have
reached someone at Cigna that didn't or doesn't take the time to do any
research on your particular policy. The main office of Cigna is located
here in Sherman, Texas where I live. I hope this helps you a little bit.
Don't give up, maybe you should try again.

Hi Teresa:
I'm having the same problem. This Thur. 4th it will be my one year
anniversary I've only lost 90 pounds. The lucky thing with me is
that my legs, thighs, arms are skinny. BUT.... belly hangs butt
droops.... I was at 174 for 2-1/2 months. I thought I was going
crazy. One of those plataue????!!!! Two weeks ago I went down to
167 but now I[m back to 170??? Is this crazy or what? Bought the
gazelle... don't do any more evercise... don't have enough time. (2
jobs). I know that if I start exercising again I will loose but, too
trun down. Maybe you are experiencing a plateau??!! I've heard that
if you change a bit the way you are eating maybe more times a day...
you fool your metabolism and you start loosing weight again. When I
went down to 167, that's what I did. Try it.. maybe it works for
you.
My daughter received a letter from Blue Cross Blue Shield informing
her that as of 1/1/05 they will no longer provide this surgery.
Great job on the loss---I wish my insurance would pay for mine--they won't even
let me see a specialist :( Why not get a stroller or wagon put the kids in and
take some nice long walks every day---as for babysitting--I have been a child
care provider for over 12 years and love it--with the right set up DC is great
and a great way to be home for your family and do all the right things for your
weight loss and great $$--I make @ 80-100K a year and love my job and not leave
my home lol

I was in my surgeons office the other day and a lady that was in there said
the same thing. If I remember correctly she was told that Cigna will no
longer pay for it in Texas, (this is probably something they just told her)
but it appears it must be everywhere. My step-daughter works for Cigna and
I will ask her about this subject and see what she says.
If I am not mistaken shouldn't ANY insurance company notify you in writing
BEFORE ANY exclusions are written to your policy?
I am so sorry that you have this news. I am currently awaiting insurance
approval. I have Unicare and I am afraid they will deny me for the same
reason. My policy has weight loss surgery as an exclusion, however it
doesn't say anything about excluding weight loss surgery if I have a medical
necessity letter (which I do---3 of them). I asked my bariatric coordinator
and she said for me to gather all of my information up and she will submit
it. She said they have paid for it in the past. Our policy is an
individual policy because my husband and I are self-employed, so therefore
it is a bit different than most group policies. So I guess time will tell.
I hate this waiting game, but I will remain patient. If the insurance
company doesn't pay anything then I will find other financial ways to get
this surgery done. When or if the insurance company denies you, don't they
have to give you a reason?

well just a little update. I had surgery 3 1/2 months ago on Nov 18th, 2003.
I started out at 365 pounds in a tight 30/32 elastic waist pants. I am now
down to 275 pounds and in a comfortable 26 button waist pants. I am able to eat
ANYTHING with no problems. Including sugar and fried foods. But I watch what I
eat Very Carefully!! I have been really slacking on the exercise and know I
need to get that started back up. Its really hard. I know thats no excuse
but...I babysit from 6am to 7pm then cook supper, bath my 3 year old, spend a
little time with hubby and daughter before putting her to bed..spend a little
time
with hubby..then he is off to bed and i get on the computer to work my second
job which is building websites and making web banners. I know...Thats NO
EXCUSE. I have no room in my house for any time of equipment and i live 35-40
minutes away from the nearest facility. I even bought a tape and cant get that
into
the day either...LOL But I will HOPEFULLY be able to stop the day
job(babysitting) soon so This will all change.
Thanks for listening to my babbling.

IS THERE A SUCH THING AS "LOSING TOO MUCH WEIGHT"? I HAD SURGERY
DEC. 2002 AND WEIGHED 260. I NOW WEIGH 128. MY IDEAL WEIGHT OR
GOAL WEIGHT WAS 160. HOW DO U STOP LOSING??? IT HAS SLOWED
DOWN... I JUST DON'T WANT TO GET TOO THIN... THANX
Hi V, When I was about 6 weeks from surgery i went on a bender eating
everything i thought i would never be having again and probably gained 10 pounds
before surgery. i ate subs, pizza, tacos, candy bars, ssioooooo much junk food.
I
really thought i could never eat again. But here I am postop and eating
everything i used to eat, just small amounts and happy with that too. I can eat
2
small slices of pizza or 2 tacos from taco bell and be full and content. Of
course i try not to eat too much of that kind a stuff but I just want to let you
know that someday you can have a little junk, just don't get nback into any bad
habits. When I went shopping yesterday i go me some different fruits from
what i usually carry in the house, some fresh shrimp and haddock and when I had
dinner last night I felt like I was at a 5 star resteraunt. So, I guess what i
am getting at is that what you are doing alot of us do but it is all for
nothing, just mroe to lsoe after. We are food junkies, that is why we need the
surgery to begin with and we need to rbeak ourselves of the nasty habit. good
Luck
to you.

Hi everyone,
I am having a little trouble getting the last 15 or so pounds off.
My pre op weight was 365 my goal weight is 160. I had surgery May
9,2002 and everything went great. I was able to get down to 173 by
December 2003. I started excercising more in Jan (3 or 4 times a week)
on my Tony Little Gazelle. Since Dec. I have gained an inch around my
hips, half an inch around my waist, and half an inch around my
thighs. From the waist up stayed the same. Worst of all I weighed
this morning and I was up to 183.If anyone has any suggestions on how
I can get this weight back off and get down to my goal I sure would
appreciate it. Thanks.

i'm writing you guys from I.C.U. i just had surgery 2 days ago!! and thank
god i think i'm fine! yes i had my worries.i even wanted to back out the day of
surgery and the surgeon talked me into going through with it. jessica in mi,
really think about the surgery. i wouldn't recommend it to anyone unless they
were over 400lbs OR someone with very risky problems like diabeties or cardio
vascular disease or something. i am only 282lbs and i was surprised that they
authorized it but we did alot of lying on the paper work. added a few pounds
here and subtracted a few inches off the top there and WALA i was approved. no
previous ilnesses. no diabeties, nor high blood presure or, anything at all.
the only thing i had was a really bad brused ego!!!!!!!!!! i'm a personal
trainer, health and fitness specialist, former owner of a small gym, and former
amatuer body builder. i'm sitting in ICU writing you guys this and regreting it.
only because i've lost 16lbs in 3 days here and i know that i could of lost
that in 2weeks in the safest and healthest way possible!!!!! i'm sitting here
with my eyes weld up because i can't believe i just put my family through this!
my 3 year old angel. my wife of 9 years (and yes i'm only26 turning 27 on
monday due the math.) i'm crazy for even thinking of doing this let alone
actually going through with it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I DID HAVE MY
COMPLICATIONS. none of the 1000 drs. here can explain why my pulse is or was up
at
150+ for the first 2 days and can't figure it out..... i'm sorry but 90% of
nurses just SUCK. so you have to really sit down and ask why am i doing this and
this is no cake walk!!!!!!!!!!!!!! my father had the surgery and i think he
made a really good decision. I DIDN'T. BECAUSE I DIDN'T REALLY NEED IT. I
WASN'T FAT JUST LAZY!!!!!!!!!!!
I think that this surgery is great for so many people i've trained in the
past and know today. but it wasn't what i needed. i didn't need surgery,,, i
just
needed to get get off my ass!
i wanted the easy way out. "hey i'll do the surgery and in 4 weeks i'll be
thin" i've had friends of mine come to the house and say "hey lets go train" and
i think what's on tonight? and don't go. i make excuses and then say "ahhhhhh
hell i don't know why i keep getting fatter"
so if you bust your ass and eat right and you can't lose weight then do it.
and i mean you actuallly really diet WITHOUT CHEATING for 2 weeks then i think
it's a good for you. but if you're like me and do well or 2 days then have a
salad with a ton of crap on it and say "well it's fat free dressing then your
not giving it your all!
it can really be done a safe way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GOODLUCK TO ALL WHO GO THROUGH WITH IT OR NOT AND MY BLESSINGS WILL GO OUT TO
ALL OF YOU!!!!!!!!!!!

Debbi,
Tell Philip that I also had abdominal pain....gas pain to be more
specific...horrible, gut wrentching, felt like I was gonna die pain,
for at least a week after my 1st surgery. I had complications and
actually had to have a second surgery....I thought my bowels would
NEVER start working again. Only once did I succumb to the pain and
moan in desperation..."what have I done???????" It DOES get better!
SOOOO much better, and I would gladly do it all again, a thousand
times over to have the results and feel the way I feel now. I missed
drinking large volumes at once also. But tell Philip that now, at 9
months post op....I can literally drink 32 ounces of water in about 2
minutes. The body adapts and liquids begin to go down as quick as you
drink them! Thats why it is so important to drink non calorie
stuff....I am SOOO excited for him that he didn't have to wait till
he was 31 years old to begin his life! In 6 months he will be SOOO
grateful for this surgery and all the ways his life has changed. I
can bike ride for miles on end now. I can hike up a mountain....I can
fit into a size 14....I can work out for 2 hours, all the things I
have only dreamed about....Keep your chin up Philip....it goes faster
than you can imagine. You WILL feel normal again....Promise.

Notes:
I guess anyone at some time or another has felt that way. Belief me
you will feel so great that eating will become secondary in your
life. From my experience, I've never vomited and I do eat
everything but, little amounts. For 3 to 4 months after operation I
used to carry a scale into all restaurants. My daughter use to tell
me (aren't you embarrazed? - NO WAY, I only ate 4 ozs. that's all.
Now I do eat more than 4. Maybe 6 oz. but, still have a bad habit to
eat fast. Soooo, I eat and then I say, well, I think I had enough
and back away from the food. And 15 mins. later, bangggg. I'm full.
You'll do just find. Even your taste will change. I used to hate
yogurt now I love it. I have the Dannon lite & fit. Also, gatorade
and cottage cheese. I'm mentioning these because I used to gag when
I saw anyone eating/drinking above. But now. I love it.
Hi All --
Have a 3/22 date (lap GBP - awaiting approval) and am now raging out
of control w/ my eating. I was doing okay until about 2 weeks ago
when all H - E - double hockey stick broke loose.
Feel that I'm not ready for the changes forced upon post-op. Kinda
like the panic you'd think you'd feel facing leaping out of the plane
on a first-time skyjump.
Frankly, I feel so free w/ eating the way I do -- not weighing, not
measuring, not caring . . . I know that sounds so juvenile but it's
really how I feel and also the motivation behind my 200# weight gain
in the last 10 years. I hate dieting!!!!!!!!
On the other hand, I'm dying physically and emotionally -- the latter
b/c how small my world has become being 5'0" and 325 lbs. I can't
stand long or walk much and I have to be graphically honest here -- I
can't even wipe my butt well anymore. Whew, I feel so much better
having said that. I never said that last part to anyone.
Been reading the posts in the last week or so but haven't posted
much. I just needed to get this off my chest and haven't anywhere or
anyone else who would listen. Hope it's okay here.
Thanks, V.
I am post-op 3 1/2 months now and I have lost 80 lbs. My health and
eating habits are, from the doctor, in great condition. But I am
approaching my 40th birthday (June 17th) and I want to have a child.
Me and my husband were trying to conceive (pre-operation) and were
not successful. We tried fertility clinics and they tried to get me
pregnant and check out my husband and I and still was unable to have
a baby. Now the one doctor (at the fertility clinic) said that it
more likely is because I was so overweight (same shit, different
day). I just wanted to know, that if I got pregnant at 7 months post-
opp instead of waiting a year or so, has anyone ever heard of anyone
getting pregnant before their 1st year was up and having a healthy
baby? I am so worried that it will be too late for me and I won't be
able to have a child, I just wanting to ask others opitions before I
make the final decision.

Check on obesityhelp.com to find a surgeon in the
international section of this site. It is very
helpful.
To add my .02 here, I also had open. I did not really have a choice
because the length of my surgeon's tools were not sufficient for me to
be done laparascopically, however, I would have opted to for the open
procedure anyway. I wanted my surgeon in me 'up to his elbows' if need
be and I didn't want to have to wait while they came out of the little
hole and sliced me open. Yes, I know that the recovery is slower, but I
felt much safer being opened up and having the 'full view' just in case
something went wrong.
A friend of mine was started lap and had to be opened immediately
because when they got into her with the lap tools, they found all her
organs were backwards and had to be reversed. Another friend had a gall
bladder full of stones that didn't show on the x-ray and was about to
rupture. You never know what kind of problem may come up or when. I
just felt safer being opened.
My scar runs from breastbone to belly button, but was fully closed and
healed within two weeks with no infections. I had two little openings
on my scar line but they closed from the inside out and I was completely
closed, as I said, in two weeks. I call the scar my 'railroad tracks'
or my battle scars because being this overweight for as long as I was,
certainly is my battle.
I don't think one way is better or worse than the other. If you have no
choice, then it really doesn't matter, does it? Just wrap your mind
around the fact that you are getting the surgery you want in the manner
in which it is available to you. The end result will still be the same.
And you will not be suffering with the abominable gas cramps and left
side pain that people complain about for weeks following lap surgery
because they don't have to blow up your abdomen with all that air...
There are definite benefits and detractions to each method. Just focus
on getting what you want in the long run and leave the method of
delivery to your surgeon.
I wish you the best of luck.

Same thing happened to me. Fluid retention. You'll find out that
one day not to far from now, you'll get on the scale and wham....
in a couple of days you'll loose 8 or 10 pounds. You will start
loosing (at the begining) 2 to 3 lbs. a week. Don't worry, you'll
loose it. I sometimes get desperate, I've lost 90 lbs. in 1 yr. I'm
OK. wishing to go down to 150 instead of 170 like i'm now. But
people tell me that I look good. We'll see.
Hi Julie---i had my rny done open two weeks ago today. I am on my feet and
feeling fine. The first 4 days I will admit were kind of rough. But never was
it so bad that I thought I wish I hadnt done this. B=But I had it done on
Monday---was home by 9am thursday morning and was out walking at walmart on
saturday. I have a few other frustrations in that I have only lost 8 pounds and
have no idea why---lost that all in the first week and nothig since---but i
have faith that I will figure it out and my body will kick in. Good luck
you---just wanted you to know that having it open was fine. No doubt that that
it is
probably more painful in the first few days---but well worth it I am
sure---CIndy

Nobody told me ahead of time this could happen.
I had lower abdominal pain below the waist a few inches down from one of the
small incisions. Felt like a knife dipped in alcohol and stabbed in the belly.
It was a very stabbing, stinging, burning pain that did cause spasms. After
checking around, I was not alone. My surgeon explained that they make as small
an incision as possible in the muscle to insert instruments but through the use
of these instruments the incision can tear further. Shortly after surgery, as
the muscle is healing/scarring, the nerves are 'waking up' and trying to reroute
through/around scarring. He recommended heating pad and assured me it would go
away. I suppose this process lasted about two weeks +/- a few days.
I grew up in the south where I toted a huge glass of iced tea around with me
everywhere. Being diabetic and a smoker my thirst was sometimes unquenchable
and I was used to guzzling from a large glass of anything put to my lips. It
only took a few absent minded attempts at this to cure me. Sip, Sip Sip slowly
and frequently.
I only missed eating briefly. I sit in a restaurant with others and think to
myself I used to eat what was on their plate and want more. Im so thankful now
that so little satisfies me. Tell your son the last bite tastes no different
than the first and to savor each.
God Bless Philip for getting this tool so young. He has such possibilities he
never dreamed of ahead of him. As he becomes a LOSER like the rest of us, his
confidence, self-esteem and more will improve. He will find many activities to
replace the food he now misses. I truly hope he includes a support group in his
road to recovery to make the most of his journey.

Hi All,
My name is Debbi, and I'm new to the group. My son, Philip, who will
be 17 yrs old in June, had the bypass surgery last Monday 2/23. He
was in Lenox Hill Hospital (we live on Long Island) and his surgeon
is the same doctor who operated on Al Roker. He is 6'1" tall and was
318 lbs the morning of his surgery. He is having a very difficult
time with the abdominal pain and is getting depressed over not
feeling well already (even though I remind him it's not even a week
yet). He misses
eating a bit, but even more so he misses drinking a big glass
of "anything". I showed him the group, and he looked around the site
but hasn't joined in. Anyone care to share their "post op" pains and
sufferings to help my son deal with the enormity of it all?
My love and support go out to all.
Thanks, Debbi
You will have to cut it, just like I'm going to. Your belly will be
reduced but still your skin will hang. Just be sure to visit your
dermatologist when you beging to develop rashes. Have the doctor put
it in his notes and when you loose all your weight and are stabled,
the insurance will pay your claim as long as everything is noted and
your rashes don't go away.
Hi Ann:
I'm in the same boat that you are in. I live in Miami and I've been
to three doctors already. Scheduled operation (lower body lift) for
Dec. 10th. The question is... has anyone here done it.? And does
anyone knows Dr. Deirde Marshal (Miami) Op. with her on Dec. I liked
her very much.
SO ... if anyone knows Dr. White or Dr. Marshall please reply.

I am sceduled to have surgery April 2nd as you all know, I am very nervous
about being put under anesthesia. I have had 2 c-sections but, I was awake for
both of those. Never been put to sleep for anything. This really scares me.
The other thing I was wondering if you guys could help me with is.........I
have been big all my life and I have had an apron stomach since I was at least
10 (not one that hangs to my knees but, over the top of my thighs) *sorry if
too graphic* I am really nervous about having a bunch of flabby skin and I was
wondering if any of u can give me some advice on how to lessen the
flabbiness. Thanks!!

Tell your son it will get better next week specially when he goes
back to the doctor and weighs in. He is going to feel great and....
about drinking, it will also get better . I had a hard time drinking
water but now, I'm able to drink much more. He just has to learn how
to do it. It will get better with time. Good Luck!!
I know two people that gained it all back and now are going to place
the Lap-band.
Hi guys
In reality what everyone should be saying is " no matter how it is done just
let me wake up"!!!!! How stupid to even care about which way! That was the
last thought on my mind. I went for surgery, and knew what was going to happen.
Weather is was done Lap -Open all I wanted to do was wake up!!!! And may I
say that this surgery was best thing I had EVER DONE IN MY LIFE! Yes i had it
done Lap but when I went in I knew that it could change at any time, and that
is fine to, whatever it takes to keep you alive is what should be our top
priority. God Bless all you guys in which ever way you do it!

Hi All,
My name is Debbi, and I'm new to the group.
HEY JULIE : I had a tummy tuck already and the scare is not in the middle of the
belly. Its from hip to hip so whether you have open or lap you will get an
addition cut and scare. Also open is more prone to infection due to longer
healing process.I am not saying that either one is the best.Just that its your
body and you,and only you should choose which is best for you.I am a very slow
healer and a sucker for pain so lap so the one for me.
Rachel Hawkridge <rayehawk@...
the only way. Nor is it *the best* way. Some people have fatty livers, some
have adhesions, some don't have Dr. choice. I had open because the procedure I
chose (a very distal RnY - 60" common channel), cannot be done lap. Surgeon
cannot access/visualize the distal *end* of the gut lap.
Open surgery *does NOT* make you more likely to have infections. We may be more
prone to seromas, which are the weeping pockets of fat that heal from the inside
out, but *not* to infections. And both seromas and infections are better
avoided by someone who is well-nourished. Start drinking protein supps *now*,
to protein load before surgery. Higher protein and vitamin C levels make
stronger tissue, quicker healing, and faster recovery. I took as much protein
drinks and vitamin C as I could stand for weeks before surgery, got split "from
nipples to knees" (as my doc says), and healed remarkably fast. I was scabbed
and itching at 1 week, scarred at 2-3 weeks.
Don't worry . . . the myth that lap is better is just that, a myth. The surgery
is *just* as invasive, just as dangerous (some say*more* than) open. And you
don't *really* save anything on the scar. 7 1" scars still makes 7" of scar.
YOur reconstructive surgery will make a scar down the middle of your belly
later, where lap patients will have scar down middle and 7 little stab scar, you
will only have the middle of belly one.

Well I too have Tricare. We are stationed at Charleston AFB in SC.
ALl of us in this region (for Tricare purposes) have NO choice now
about the way we have our RnY done. If we want it done we HAVE to
have it done open. SO.......we have to sift through all of the
messages and try to find the 'positive only' ones that give us
encouragement and hope. We all have fears going into this and it
does NOT help us one bit when we are constantly bombarded with the
comments from the Lap patients that think their way is the ONLY way.
I don't mean to be harsh....I am sorry. I have been told about all
of the pro's and con's to having it done both ways. In the end they
BOTH work and have the same purpose. I am a classic lap candidate
but that doesn't matter. I too was very depressed when I first was
told about this new ruling but I force myself to look on the brite
side. With Tricare we have little to NO grief having this surgery
approved. There is something to be said for that. WE are lucky! I
have read about so many people that have to fight forever with their
insurance companies. So we may be down and out for a little
longer......that is ok. It is all worth the end result isn't it?? I
love you all for all of your messages and tips. I am more of a
lurker then anything but I could not sit quiet on this one. For all
of you Tricare people out there. There is also a website like this

sue, again, feel free to forward me these "offensive" posts. the
vast majority of us SIFT through posts for what does or doesn't
benefit/inform us. these folks meant no harm, i'm 100% sure. they
were recounting their swift lap recoveries etc etc & they did not
mean to be antagonistic. & again, the vast majority of us
understand that this is a support group.

julie, welcome, as i see, this is your 1st post since joining on
january 21st. the folks that wrote in regarding lap surgery were,
imo, trying to be informative & helpful; they took the time & effort
to share their personal experience & observations. as one of the
moderators, it's my job to pick up on negativity & baggage. i
frankly didn't detect any ill intentions. feel free to copy & paste
any posts u perceive to be inappropriate & forward them to my email
inbox.
i understand your pre-op apprehensions completely. personally, if
the solution to MO involved a 100 inch incision, i would go for it.
i was beyond ready to leave the weight behind.
(i am pre-op for reconstructive surg, so i'm feeling trepidations
regarding the extensive incisions & the down time, btw).
anyway, when i began to leave the weight behind, i felt (feel)
unadulterated joy & freedom.
hang in there & keep posting.
we're here for support & respectful debates.

I have attended two different info sessions and met with a surgeon
from another office. I feel very comfortable with all the doctor's
that I have researched and have spoken to several patients who have
had surgery by all of them, every one of them feel THEIR doctor was
the best. And why not, their surgeon gave them their quality of life
back so of course there would be personal bias. Many on here do the
same thing. I have noticed that some surgeons glamorize the surgery
with lots of before and after pics and testimonials while others are
very upfront about the risks involved, personal commitment and
permanent lifestyle changes. I will continue to do my research and
speak to those who have done the surgery but in the end, my decision
will be based on my "gut feeling" (no pun intended) about the doctor,
his staff and the care at the hospital. Then I'll have faith in my
decision. Unfortunatly, many of us have some limitations with
insurance, distance or family commitments to travel a great distance.
Open vs. Lap is not an issue with me as the end result will be the
same and my life will improve from the surgery regardless of how it
is performed. As far as scars go, I figure I'll have far worse scars
from a lower body lift when I reach goal LOL. So the debate carries
on about which surgery style has more risk and recovery time, but
that is why I joined this group in the first place to get all the
info out there and filter it as I choose.
Thanks to the group for sharing your knowledge and experiences...
Amy in Florida :)
Good for you. Although when you register in the hospital they're
going to tell you that there is a possibility that you may be open.
... Remember.... once you get operated you are not able to take
pills. I still desolve them with water. I had an infection in one of
the little holes and I had to take massive antibiotic which then I
developed an allergy that's why I continue to say that the fat in
your abdomen procludes heeling.

Hi everyone!
I have been reading the posts here for some time. I am not sure if I
have ever posted myself. I have finally come to the day. Monday I
will be having surgery at Presbyterian Medical Center in Dallas. It
has been a 10 month struggle for approval and now at last it is here.
I am excited and happy and so far not scared. I have alot of
confidence in my surgeon and I think through reading here and
elsewhere I have a good idea of what to expect.
Thank you for being here. Please remember me in your prayers, and I
will see you on the losing side soon.

We have an informative session before we can even see the surgeon and he has
done over 1200 WLS's in his career. Dr. O was on Oprah. Anyhow..He said that
you have a little more risk with Open because of incisional infections, and if
you lift. Incisional hernias. He had perfected LAP to the point that he only
spends 15 minutes longer doing LAP than OPEN. He said the thickness of the
abdominal fat/wall is the biggest criteria for LAP vs. OPEN. He does more LAP
than open
I think its a case by case preference for the surgeon.

Susan,
Speaking only for myself, my goal weight is purely my choice. My
surgeon said if I got down to about where I am now I should be happy
since I started at 600+ pounds, even tho I am still obese. My goal
is just to be under 300, somewhere I haven't been since the start of
my 8th grade year in school when I weighed 296 at my football
physical (more than 20 years ago). And no, I don't consider the
excess skin in my goal weight...I want to get there on my own BEFORE
I have any more removed thru surgery.

Same thing happened to me. You'll loose it anyway. You probably
have some retention fluids. Try to drink chicken soup. maybe a
scrabble egg with diced onions. That did it for me. Potatoes are
fatting so I moved away from that.
Yes you do get discourge some times. I've been on a plateau for 2
months... Then 2 weeks ago lost 5 pounds in a weekend. But, I've
gained 2 pounds this week. I've had some problems with my blood
sugar where it has dropped and I've been munching hersey kisses.
YES, no dumping. ...Also almost a years after surgery..
I would move away frrom that dr. Lap is the way to go. If he has no
experience with lap please find someone who performs the operation
with lap. Recovery is faster and in my opinion safer. Did mine last
year in miami with dr. de la cruz munoz.. He is great.
That's a great date to have your surgery/. I had mine last year same
day at 8 am. I feel great although I've only lost 90 pounds but also
look great. What a feeling when people you've known all your life
and see you again and don't recognize you. (physically) but know who
you are because of your voice.
PAIN.... morphin inject4ed 1st day at the hospital and demerol.
When you get out of the hospital they will give some pain killers
but you are not going to need them. Maybe have a pill at night when
you're going to sleep. for a couple of days. The pain is not that
bad. Belief me ... You'll handle it well. Just think.... You'll be
over in less than a week and when you go back to yoiur surgeon....
The weight (magically) is starting to be off.!!! Good luck.
Again,... had mine that same day. Try to be one of the first one's.
Oh,... when you are over the surgery... NO HUNGER AT ALL

Personally, I wasnt happy with my visit in Ocala. Im glad I waited until I
found the surgeon that pioneered this LAP procedure and trains surgeons
nationwide. Although Dr Carisquilla did not do the surgery, a partner, Dr
English did. I was totally impressed with the office staff, in Ft Lauderdale,

recommend them to anyone in central/south florida. The extra drive was worth

Hi all--just a quick question. I had an open RNY done 2/16--about 12 days
ago. No complications---feeling fine---staples out and Im pretty much back to
my normal self. Following the diet like i should although I had a few problems
getting in all of my fluids for about the first week---im only getting about
50g of protein a day and that is with 2 shakes. I am on a soft/puree
diet--mostly eating pnut butter, cheese, pureed like chicken, some mashed
potatoes,
refried beans---and that is about it----i have only lost 8 pounds. Doesnt that
seem like it should be more. I would just have thought a bunch would drop off
in those first weeks just because of the major change. I was just wondering
anyone has found it takes your body a few weeks to really "catch on" to what
is happening. Im not obsessed with my weight--just concerned that I a may be
holding fluid--as my blood pressure was high on my first post op visit.
Also--i eat about 1/4 c at a time--and I really dont feel full at all--is that
normal? If i drink too fast i get a pain in my chest--but when i eat it is
fine--any thoughts are appreciated.

I am currently living in Fort Benning, GA.

I am going through military insurance to do this surgery. I have
been working on this since last Oct. It has been one of the most
emotional rides I have had in my life so far. The paperwork alone, I
guess most of you would know. But...I just got all my approvals done
and though I don't have an official date yet, I see my surgeon on
3/19. The time frame they have given me with just a few routine
checks left it should be done around the end of April (I hope).
I have been blessed to be pretty healthy considering my weight (285)
but have done all there is to be done and now am so ready to do
this, I would be lying to say I'm not nervous but really feel I have
learned enough so far (always more to learn too) and feel confident
that this will be the chance and change to commit to a new me.
I have really not gotten to know anyone who has done this (just few

not found any support groups yet in my area either. I have researched
it extensively online and with my Dr.s and Psychologist. My neighbor

Hi everyone,
I'm new to this site, and to the bypass.
I have a lapband, which has failed to lose me much weight(20kgs), due

Having only done a little homework to date, at this early stage, I am
leaning towards the Duodenal Switch-Bilio Pancreatic Diversion
procedure, based on diminished complication rates. Is there anyone on
this list who has had this procedure? Does anyone know a New Zealand
surgeon who does this procedure?
I'd really appreciate your feedback, and please feel free to email me

Many thanks,

I look forward to getting involved with this group as well.
I guess I've typed plenty, hopefully not too much.

I'm Tricare as well at Fort Benning. I have been told the exact same
thing, that they are only covering the open procedure. No Lap
Dana
I have tricare insurance....i am approved and have a surgery date and
all of that. But the thing is..i was told i could have the lap and
now i am being told by my insurance that they are going to quit
approving that b/c it is still experimental. I know a few people who
have had the lap. I don't want the open but I don't know who to talk
to or contact. Any suggestions??????????

Hi Ellen,
My dr and nutrionist gave me the okay for coffee too but said to be
careful not to add calories with sugar or cream. I occasionally
have a latte but its a 'skinny latte'. Also, a little coffee may
help with irregularity which some people have after surgery.
Good Luck!

Has anyone else tried the Chef's Choice frozen bowls? They have 40-45 grams of
protein (except the Shrimp stirfry only has 15) 5-6 grams sugars and 9-11 grams
of carbs. They are awesome. They are approx 11 oz bowls and you can eat more
than once from one.
Pretty good when 1/2 or less of a serving offers up 20 grams of protein.
Everyone needs convenience once in a while.

Hi Marie or should I say Howdy Home Girl!
Thanks for your reply. I'm in Sea Gate, near Coney Island.
My doc is Marina Kurian (same doc as Al Roker) and she's at Lenox
Hill on East 77th Street.
This afternoon, I went to nmy required nutritional consult and Dr.
Kurian should have the results by Monday. After that, it's just
waiting to hear from Oxford.
Monday, 3/22/04 -- I'm excited, anxious and scared -- all rolled
together!
Sure am wondering what the other side will be like for me.

Mimi,
I hate to be the one to tell you this, but Dr. Tenewicz is closing
his office July 1st. His last surgery is being preformed next Monday,
3/01. I have two friends who had their surgery done by him and they
have to find a new doctor for follow up now. I went to doctor in
Ocala this week and loved him, but I still hate that he isn't local.
Oh well, I have to sacrifice if I really want this.
Good luck,
Amy :)
Hi, My name is Tammy. I had surgery in St.Louis thru the New Start Program. I
had Dr. Fabito it was done open on May 5th, 2003. I am not sure if he accepts
Medicaid or not. I know he has talked about retiring but I haven't received a
letter in the mail yet to confirm that. I have lost 135 lbs so far. Just 12 to
go to get to my goal weight. I would like to make it to my goal weight by my
one year anniversary. I guess we will see. Tammy

Does anyone one here know of any surgeons in the St. Louis, Missouri
area (other than Dr. Eagon) who do this surgery and accept Medicaid? If
so, please send me the details privately. My friend will certainly
appreciate any help she gets from this inquiry. Thanks a lot.

Hello everyone,
Today I had to visit my family doc for strep throat, 31 days post op
of RNY w/chole. Weight today was 370lbs, this is -48lbs from day of
operation. Other than the very sore throat I feel good about how
things are going and look forward to the next few weeks.
Thanks,
Ray
hi evryone,
i have finally been referred to a dr. only it's not the doctor that i wanted
because he's out of net-work..so i have been refered to DR. TENEWITZ...has
anyone seen him or had wls surgery w/ him. i've gathered some info. in the
computer but more wouldn' hurt..mimi
Thank's Pat for your advice I went to the dr and He told me that I
need to have 90 grams of protein to build myself back up and to make
sure I'm getting the right vit/min that I need a day. Since I started
taking the protein four times a day I have kept food down . So thank
you for taking the time out to share.

Angie
Jayne,
Since I wasn't going that many places anyways, I chose either a sports
bra or just one with no underwire. the difficult part for me was the
binder that i had to wear, i think that was more uncomfortable...had
to buy new bras cuz the only ones i had were underwire and they
irritated my skin with the binder. After I went back to work, I
continued to wear the "comfy" bra and realized I had to change cuz it
wasn't doing much for me after losing about 75 pounds(hehehehehe...I
needed a lift)...heck, while at home, most of the time I just went
without one! Felt so liberating!!! Anyway, there is my 2 cents!!
Hannah
What kind of bras did you find comfortable after surgery? I would
think that based on where that upper left incision is, a bra might
not be comfortable, but...well....based upon um..."gravity"...no bra
might not be comfortable either. Know what I mean? :-)
Thanks,
Jayne

Ellen: I had coffee in the evening the same day I had surgery in the
morning. Also it was on my tray for breakfast. Sipping one ounce at a time you

I have not used them but I would call your credit card company and tell
them you never received the merchandise. Then dispute the charge. They
should remove it while they investigate it.

Hi all,
Well it has been an interesting two weeks. The responses that I have been
recieving on the subject of what happened the week before last has been
impressive, enlightening and yes, even educational. So now the question is what
do I do? Some of you have requested a letter writing campaign toward the church
and/or the minister. Some of you have wanted to escort me back into that same
church as though I were getting a Secret Service detail just like the President.
While some of you have requested, andf which I have already done, to find
another church. I now have a church that has put me as a member even though I am
viewing their service on the Internet. At the same time, I had seriously thought
about the idea of the escort detail, but in the end thought that would be too
expensive just to have you all come to Dallas to escort me into church.
The thing that I am, at this time reluctant to do, is start a letter/email
campaign about this issue. What good would it do if I am not going there
anymore. In fact, I am not even a member. It was something that I was conserned
about because not only did I see this from a non biblical point of view, but
also from a discriminatory point of view. Now if you still want to do this
letter writing campaign, I will provide the information on the condition that:
1. you bcc me on your email jasonsking2004@...
2. you send me the responses. I think I would just like to see what kind of tone
comes out of this.
So, here it goes:

Hi all! I just had to share this with you. I had Lap RnY a month ago
tomorrow. I weighed in today and I've lost 30lbs!!! I'm so psyched!
Doc was pleased. At first I was a little bummed, thought it would
have been more but then I thought about it. I've lost a pound a day!
When was the last time I ever did that? Never!!! Doc also put me on
regular foods which was good news too. It's been so long I'm almost
afraid to try reg. food again...lol.

Dep,
Contact your credit card company and dispute the charge. Tell them
you never received the item and have attempted to contact them
without any luck. They will send you an affidavit form to fill out
and return to them, they will make all efforts to contact the company
for resolution on your behalf.
Good luck :)
Congratulations on your hard work!

Hi all,
Don't post often, but read everyday. I had surgery on 6/9/03 at my
highest weight ever of 250 lbs. This morning I weighed 149.5 lbs. I
have finally made it to the Century Club. I have gone from a sizw 22
to a size 7/8, and to celebrate today I bought mysef a silk Jones New
