Mine was fine also but then at 8 months they had to take it out. I
said at the time of my GP "no way do not take it out, if it isnt
broke dont touch it".....well I wish I had them take it out then
instead of feeling the pain of the stones at 8 months. We lose the
weight to fast and the stones build.

First, visit all your doctors to solocit a Letter of Medical
Necessity. Select your surgeon and give them copies of these
letters to add to their letter and request for coverage. Your
surgeon's office coordinator is a great asset, doing most of the
work for you. Begin compiling a list of previous diet attempts,
most insurance companies want to see you have exhausted other
routes. Many insurance companies routinely deny first requests, so
go in prepared with both barrels loaded. The more documentation
for 'medical necessity' the better. I even had a letter from my
Ears, Nose, Throat doc for gastric reflux. Dont think you have
sleep apnea? Get your PCP to order a sleep study; you just may have
it and not know it. Heel spurs? Get a podiatrist or your PCP to
document it. Urinary Stress Incontinence? Get your OB/GYN or PCP
to document it. Bad back, knees? Get your ortho to document it.
Varicose veins? Diabetes? High Blood Pressure? Elevated cholestral,
Triglycerides? Infertility? Gallstones? Arthritis? You see where
Im going. If denied, dont stop there. APPEAL. Denied again?
Write your state's insurance commissioner.
Get to work. You are worth it.
Good Luck

Hi All... I am just starting this whole process, but I am very
excited about the whole thing. I spoke with my Internal Medicine
doctor at my last regular appointment and told him of my interest i
having this surgery done. He was very supportive of it and told me
that he would do whatever was neccessary to help me along the way. I
called yesterday to the doctor of my choice and have an appointment
for March 29th. The office person I spoke with told me that my
insurance company, First Health, pays for the surgery VERY WELL. I
am very excited about that.
My problems begin with my employer, who now says that in order to be
paid while out on leave for any surgery, other than in emergent
situations, we have to have a 2nd opinion from our Employee Health
Physician. Hopefully this will not be much of a problem, then I have
to schedule around everyones vacations....
Wish me luck.... I am hoping for a relatively easy transition thru
the whole process.

I have just been a member for a very short while , reading and
lurking. I feel I need this surgery but have an exclusion in my

I am morbidly obese. I am 5 ft. tall and weight 228 lbs. Just curious
if this is something I could get my ins. to see that I need this. I
have alot of physical problems that could be elevaited with this .

I have to share my JOY with you all, my insurnace called the surgeon
this morning and said they needed some additional blood work to prove
my being overweight isn't a thyroid thing for the past 25 years -
which I have had it tested and know it isn't. But the insurance lady
said that if the test came back a non thyroid thing then she sees no
reason not to apporve me!!! YIPEEEEE!! Went in this afternoon and
did the blood work and the insurance should have it by thursday
afternoon. This is going so much faster than whaat I thought it
would. It has only been 1 working day since they received the
papers. ANd i could be approved by this friday possibly!!!!!

BLUE CARE NETWORK

2007-09-25 01:43:36

My insurance company denied this procedure for me at every single
level leaving my last hope to be in the hands of the state of
Michigan. I got the best new on March 3rd that the State of Michigan
had ruled to reverse BCN's denial.
What happens next is horrible. After I got the great news I
immediately called BCN to advise what I needed to do next. I was
advised that I should go ahead and schedule my surgery and they would
just reactivate my file. The day was to be March 25th.
On Friday, BCN rep. called me at work to inform me that they would be
appealing the reversal by the State of Michigan. The good new is
that because the insurance co. is appealing the states decision their
lawyers are going to represent me in the Circuit Court case.
Has anyone else experienced this.

hurt really bad. Anyone experience this? I have a call in to the dr but I
have to wait for him to call me back. (Have to remember this is the surgeon I
have not seen since the day of my surgery)..Not even post op in the hospital!

RE: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] Humana insurance

2007-09-23 13:35:48

I have Human PPO Choice Network. My surgery was covered. At work, we
just got notice that Humana was not putting an exclusion in their plan
which would mean that Humana would no longer cover any surgery related
to obesity. Please note, that Humana reps could not confirm if it was
across the board or just in small groups that are fully insured. I
would think that when a plan is self insured, it would be the employer
who would make an exclusion vs. the insurance company. So you might
want to call.

I am 11 days out this morning and feel great, I have lost 18lbs, I am

and
did laundry yesterday..So Life is good...I write down what i eat every day and
am now up to 60 grs. of protein daily (that was really hard to do..but im
there), I have started to pack up the clothes i will never fit into again,
Meds I take:
I take a pill for gallbladder, opened up into my crystal lite..I take an
antacid which is nasty, but it is only 1 tsp. every morning and i chew a
flintstone complete every morning,, I must really chew it well,, so i have asked
my
husband to not speak to me while i am chewing...lolol ..What a new concept for
me, I use to hold hour long conversations while eating a whole pizza!!!
The first day I took my flintstone was, my second day home,, And I Made
chicken broth so that if I didn't chew it well it would help wash it down and
have
not had any problems with it...and I take B12 1000mgr. (2 tablets) under my
tongue every Sunday...
I also wanted to share: My Birthday is today, and my husband got me a
wonderful birthday card, saying Happy 1st Birthday (43 really)
Congratulations on
the beginning of your new life..I think he is wonderful....It made me cry

Back to Normal for Me

2007-09-22 22:53:46

Question: Normal being:
- energy is at same level as prior to surgery or better
- eating is going fine - without stomach upset
- you're back to doing all the things you were before if not more.
Generally you feel normal. Or perhaps a new normal.
So How long?
secondly, and important as well, is was your surgery lap or open.
I had an open Roux-en-Y (and gastrectomy = old stomach disected out
of body, due to disease caused from years of anti-inflamatory Rx,
which turned these two operations into a 7 hour procedure.)
Took me about 5 months before I wanted to do almost anything (I
anticipated being well in 5-7days, as I had experienced a myriad of
previous major surgeries when I was young.)
I did not have much trouble eating, although I'd vomit if I drank
liquids too soon, or ate too much, or the food was too dry to go
into the pouch easily. I'm 11 months out and I currently don't vomit
very often unless I over judge the space I have in my pouch. It is
rather interesting that I do not vomit everything I eat, rather,
like a baby burping excess milk, I only purge the amount of food
that is too much for my new stomach capacity.
I can do most anything I did before surgery by about the fifth
month. I had major trauma when I was young, so I do have limitations
which continue to plague me. I am however, having a much easier time
walking and going a distance.
I would do my surgery again in a heartbeat! I've lost just 100
pounds in 10 1/2 months. Even though I was on a ventilator for 2
days because I did not breath on my own after surgery, and had to
have the extensive surgery versus the lap or regular open bypass.
I am only recently starting an excercise program using my treadmill,
and I may, over time, build stamina and health benefits. Even with
the small amount of exercise I get weekly, I now have more mobility
and am more limber, so,I'd say,I have a new level of normal that is
much more comfortable. Although I still lack pure energy, I've come
a long way as a rather unfit 56 year old.
Hope this helps. Lynda

Re: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] New to the site and questions about open surgery

I had open on May 5, 2003. I went back to work at 3 weeks post op. But I have a
sit down job. I file Medicare insurance at the local hospital. I never took any
pain medicine after I left the hospital. It made me sick to my stomach. The pain
was not bad. It was the muscle spasms I had that bothered me the most. It was
almost like having contractions with having a baby. It would get real tight
feeling and last about 20 min. then all of a sudden I would feel it release. I
had to make myself eat for the first 3 months because I was never hungry. I was
also one of them that was scared to try anything new. It was just ten months
and I have only thrown up 5 times total. I have lost 135 lbs so far. I have
another 13 lbs to go. I would like to do this by my anniversary date but not
sure if I will do it. Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Muscular dystrophy and was told by my nuerologist that there could be
complications due to have a muscular disease. I have tried diets and not been
successful. I am now just over 300lbs. The heaviest I have ever been. Has anyone
with Muscular dystrophy ever had this surgery performed? If the decision is left
up to me I will go forward with the surgery. I would appreciate hearing from
anyone that has had this done with MD. Thanks!

Re: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] need advice with insurance

I was on first name bases with my insurance company. Just call and ask if they
got your doctors approval. If not call your doctor and tell them they have not
recieved it. Stay in touch with both Doctor and insurance. It will get done
faster. I talked to my insurance company for 6 months right up to the day before
surgery.

Hi everyone, my doctors office sent in the paper work for pre-

things up. I have no idea what I am supposed to ask them other than
are they done? Does anyone have any advice on what I should say or
ask to help expedite things??? Thanks!

I am scheduled for WLS on Tuesday, March 30th.
Since getting my surgery date I've gotten:
A stomach virus
Another virus where I ended up with a sinus infection; double ear
infections and an upper respiratory infection
A sudden breakout of my hidradenitis supprativa - and I have an open
wound on one of breasts that won't heal!
And now...drum roll, please.....
Two Kidney Stones!!
Will it ever end??

Humana insurance

2007-09-17 13:48:33

Do any of you have Humana PPO insurance? I have Humana insurance and
I don't think it covers the gastric bypass. I have gotten all
excited about it, I was pretty skeptical at first but I have
researched it a lot and it sounds like something I need to do, but
now I am afraid that my insurance doesnt' cover it.
Thanks

Dear Phyllis,
Anytime you are on meds, especially with the kidneys involved you will retain
fluid. I am sure that you will show a good loss soon. Also watch that you
are not getting too many calories with the soft creamy food, high calorie foods.

Re: Digest 1913-Famnily needs advice AND Wasia

2007-09-17 00:59:26

Mary
You echo my outlook to the T.
Wednesday was my 3 month post-op anniversary, when I visited my endocrinologist.
After explaining how I had already eliminated all glucophage (2000 mg daily)
since January, eliminated all insulin in the past month and was down to just 2
each 10 mg tablets of glipizide daily; I handed her my accu-chek readings. She
told me she was writing a rx for only 5 mg tabs of glipizide to be taken only
once a day and when I had three consecutive before breakfast readings of 80 to
quit the glipizide all together. In my wildest dreams I thought it would take 6
months to begin coming off my diabetic meds. Im off all meds for gastric
reflux, unless you count my surgeons standard prescribed 4 daily tabs of Pepcid
Complete for the first year to provide calcium, etc. My blood pressure is down,
but not off those meds yet. Also Im off a lot of other meds for the boring list
of other problems I was too young at 52 to have.
Wasia:
In three months Ive only (ONLY?) lost 49 lbs and have been at a plateau for
WEEKS! However, that is 50% of my excess weight. I have to keep telling myself
that those who started out weighing in excess of 300-400 lbs will lose MUCH
faster than I will. Im told it takes EVERYONE 12-18 months to lose 75% of their
excess body weight and I will continue to lose but at a much slower rate because
I have less to lose. Its our body's way of pacing itself, and much healthier in
the long run. Hopefully this slowdown will give my skin time to the lack of fat
to cover and not sag too much. So, dont be bummed, be thankful for any loss
knowing there is more to come and most of all the health benefits. AND you can
vent anytime :).

There is a risk at anything you do. There is a risk to every medical
procedure. But the risk is very small and the benefits of this surgery far out
weight
the risk. The surgery has saved my life. I was a bigger risk for this surgery
because of my age and medical condition. I am 59 years old and weighed almost
400 lb., I was in a wheelchair, I have heart problems, an aortic aneurysm,
arthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic bronical asthma, very bad spinal stenosis and
spinal deterioration, and I WAS a diabetic, and I HAD High blood pressure that
was going to cause the aneurysm to rupture. I know longer have diabetes or high
blood pressure. I am even able to get around in the house now without my
wheelchair. I was doomed without the surgery and now I have hope for a better
life and more time with my family. I made the choice to take the chance and I
went through it all with no problems. I have not been sick at all. Even though I
weighed almost 400# I was still able to have a LAP. I was only in the hospital
2 days and as of this day I have lost132 pounds. This surgery has truely
saved and gave me back my life. If you mother-in-law is in fairly good shape
she
will probably add years to her life by having the surgery. Good luck and God

whats the difference?? THANKS!!

Re: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] Carbs vs Net Carbs

2007-09-14 15:47:36

Carbs are basically what turns into sugar.......Net carbs are how the carbs
effect the blood glucose levels. When companies are determining net carbs,
they deduct fiber, and sugar alcohols, however, they still turn into sugar in
the
body. Be careful....don't get too caught up in net carbs...Carbs are
carbs....if there is a net carb, then there is a gross carb too

New Ads

2007-09-10 03:52:36

Well my lovelies, the government has decided to piss me off this
week. They have decided that the country is too overweight, so
instead of treating obesity like a disease, which it is, they are
going to poke fun at it to get us to lose. They are running new ads
where Someone will be walking along and run across a fat stomach
laying on the ground, and they poke it with a stick. There are
similar things with love handles, etc. It is supposed to signify
people "dropping" their weight. Ya know, they wouldn't do this for
AIDS, or diabetes, or any other disease. They have chosen to "poke"
fun at the obese population to get us to lose weight. I think that if
ridicule and jokes were the answer, we would have lost the weight a
long time ago. We love with ridicule, being made fun of, looked down
on, and rejected everyday of our lives. This country already dispises
us, I don't think they needed to make an ad campaign out of it.

Happy Birthday Mary!

My second day home was really uneventful..I woke early and the focus of the
day was fluidâ¦how all consuming this was to meâ¦.I felt wonderfulâ¦and
felt
like
I could take on the worldâ¦but then It came time to take a shower..which
seemed to not only wash away any dirt from the day before, but all the
energy I
thought I had..lolol
I spent most of the morning trying to get in my protein after my meds,
watching tv. Crocheting and around 12:30 my best buddy stopped by to see
how my
day
was going, she really is a wonderful friendâ¦you know bending over is a
real
no noâ¦there was a rock on the kitchen floor that one of the dogs had drug
in
and when I reached over to pick it upâ¦immediately decided that the kitchen
floor
was some how enhanced with that wonderful rock laying there and would wait
until my husband got home to discuss a rock garden themeâ¦in the middle of
the
kitchenâ¦..
You know Chicken Boullion RULES!!..this seems to be the best thing in the
world as far as taste and easiness to get downâ¦who would have thoughtâ¦.
My oldest daughter arrived home around 2:30pm and proceeded to put dishes
away, and decided that there was no immediate need for a rock garden in the
kitchen..to which I had really grown accustom to over the course of the
dayâ¦so
it
looked like my husband would be spared the debateâ¦lolol
Around 3pm it was time for a nap..this was not open for discussion,,as my
body was taking one and I was merely along for the ride⦠I awoke with a
tongue
that seemed to have grown an extra layer of yuK!! Kinda like the atkins diet

get

Regarding Pain Medications in Hospital

2007-09-08 02:34:40

Lisa, I too had an open Roux-en-Y and the anesthesiologist was
unable to connect an epidural. When I came out of surgery I tried
the morphine pump, and usually I can take morphine pills, but for
some reason the drip gave me very extreme headaches that were, for
me, worse than the surgical pain. I had to do without pain
medication for the next 4 days, as I refused the morphine drip and
was allergic to other pain medications.
The last day in the hospital (day 5) the head pharmacist visited me
with new information about a new long acting form of morphine (I had
trauma years ago and usually took 3 pills everyday at home for
extreme pain that I have in my back, neck & knees). He said the
doctor would give me a dose to see how I did, and it worked great.
The medication was named Avinza, 30 mg., and it comes in capsule
form...right after surgery I took the capsules apart and sprinkled
the "tiny pearl like" contents into a spoonfull of applesause and
swallowed it. This worked great and they hold you in less pain for
12 hours, so you only need to take one capsule, twice a day.
Talk to the doctor about Avinza, it just might save you days of pain
and silent suffering.

Hi Lenora,
I eat Edame soy nuts, roasted and lightly salted. They are 140 calories for 1/4
cup serving with 12 grams of protein. Very delicious. I get them at Trader Joes.
Somebody at Curves told me about them. I eat them when I get hungry. I always
seem to start out being afraid I'll eat too much, but have always felt satisfied
with one serving. just eat them one at a time.

RE: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] Birthday - HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARY!!!

2007-09-07 14:26:59

Mary,
I can't believe how close our "birthdays" are. I knew about our surgery
dates, but my physical birthday was March 5. I, like you, have not felt
this good in so long, it is really difficult to actually remember. I
haven't lost the weight as quickly as I was expecting, but I am totally
thrilled. At this point, I still have a way to go, but I don't really have
any hanging skin that I am concerned about yet either. I have gone through
a lot of changes in the last year, including my surgery, my mother passing
away and my husband leaving because of his not being able to handle my
weight loss (he weighs 420 pounds!), but I am going to come out ahead in all
of this and am very proud of myself for coming this far.
Hope your birthday is fantastic!!!
Mary

New to this group

2007-09-06 11:19:42

I'm relatively new to this group. This is my first time to post but
I've been reading the posts off and on for a few weeks. I started
the process for surgery in December of 03 by attending an
orientation. My appointment with the surgeon was February 20th. I
just found out today that my insurance approved the surgery (I have
to add that I was initially shocked at what my pre-payment would be
to the hospital, but I've recovered from the shock..I think) I have a
surgery date of May 24th and I'm scared. I have panic/anxiety
disorder (for which I take medication) and I'm a bit claustrophobic.
I addressed this with the surgeon and he reassured me that I would be
able to get my meds through an IV, but I'm still worried I'll have a
panic attack while I'm in the hospital. Does anyone else in this
group suffer from panic/anxiety disorder? I have a many other
concerns but that's at the top of my list right now. Thanks in
advance for any imput.
Note: I still have to see the internist, cardiologist, bloodwork and
have the psy eval, which I'm concerned about given my panic attacks.

To go snacks (jerky?)

2007-09-05 13:35:44

I was able to have beef jerky at 6 months. It is something that you have to chew
a lot, so probably not good for a gulper. I have always had low blood pressure
so sodium has always been incourraged for me, but beef jerky is easy to make on
your own and then you control the nutritional content depending on what you
flavor it with.
I'm 2 years out and down 240 lbs.

hi lisa, be sure & discuss your pain threshold w/ your surgeon, &
describe any previous surgeries, etc. also avoid herbs, vitamin E,
aspirin & advil, they say 7 days before surgery. (just received a 2
page list from my surgeon of forbidden "drugs".

hi nora. cheese, turkey jerky, sunflower seeds, s/f hard candy(just a
couple, sorbitol, ya know), there's a great prot bar recommended by a
friend called Strive. 3 net carbs, 20 gr prot.
after choking down a couple dozen different brands, this is the best
by far.

To go snacks (jerky?)

2007-09-03 21:09:05

I eat beef jerky all the time for a snack. Chew
really well, small pieces. It's low in calorie and
fat and a good source of protein.

Re: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] my surgery is 5 days away

2007-09-03 18:28:31

I didn't have pain meds since the 2nd day in the
hospital. Eveyone is different. I took tylenol the
night I got home because I had a doozer of a headache.
That was it.

Isn't beef jerky too hard to digest until about a year out?
I thought beef was a no-no? What about the sodium?

My doctor is big on the beef jerky. He loves that stuff for
snacking because you have to chew it up really well and it
is high protein and lower fat and there is a bunch of
different flavors. My hubby and I have taken to making our
own
jerky to help me maintain my protein. - Krys

Jessica----sorry your husband isnt much help. I am a single Mom so I was
sort of in the same shoes. I had an open RNY 3 weeks ago. I will just say that
you need to be prepared that you will not be able to pick up doing the
housework and taking care of the kids right when you get home. It wasnt
horrible--but for about the first 5 or 6 days at home I wasnt really worth much
and Id
never have been able to take care of my daighter without help. Im three weeks
out now and am just getting back to where I feel like i can take care of
things. Good luck with everything--just wanted you to be prepared---CIndy

Re: Post-Op troubles

I would place an ad in the paper for temporary
childcare/housekeeping. You will definitely need this for small
children. You can also prepare lots of meals ahead for your family
and freeze them.
Most importantly, I would lay it on the line for hubby now. Tell
him what to expect. Tell him you are hiring help - no negotiating.
Your doctor may be able to help too. He can explain your
limitations either by phone or letter to hubby.
Best of luck,

day 2-3 home from the hosp...

2007-09-01 03:11:09

My second day home was really uneventful..I woke early and the focus of the
day was fluidâ¦how all consuming this was to meâ¦.I felt wonderfulâ¦and felt
like
I could take on the worldâ¦but then It came time to take a shower..which
seemed to not only wash away any dirt from the day before, but all the energy I
thought I had..lolol
I spent most of the morning trying to get in my protein after my meds,
watching tv. Crocheting and around 12:30 my best buddy stopped by to see how my
day
was going, she really is a wonderful friendâ¦you know bending over is a real
no noâ¦there was a rock on the kitchen floor that one of the dogs had drug in
and when I reached over to pick it upâ¦immediately decided that the kitchen
floor
was some how enhanced with that wonderful rock laying there and would wait
until my husband got home to discuss a rock garden themeâ¦in the middle of the
kitchenâ¦..
You know Chicken Boullion RULES!!..this seems to be the best thing in the
world as far as taste and easiness to get downâ¦who would have thoughtâ¦.
My oldest daughter arrived home around 2:30pm and proceeded to put dishes
away, and decided that there was no immediate need for a rock garden in the
kitchen..to which I had really grown accustom to over the course of the dayâ¦so
it
looked like my husband would be spared the debateâ¦lolol
Around 3pm it was time for a nap..this was not open for discussion,,as my
