Mary
You echo my outlook to the T.
Wednesday was my 3 month post-op anniversary, when I visited my endocrinologist.
After explaining how I had already eliminated all glucophage (2000 mg daily)
since January, eliminated all insulin in the past month and was down to just 2
each 10 mg tablets of glipizide daily; I handed her my accu-chek readings. She
told me she was writing a rx for only 5 mg tabs of glipizide to be taken only
once a day and when I had three consecutive before breakfast readings of 80 to
quit the glipizide all together. In my wildest dreams I thought it would take 6
months to begin coming off my diabetic meds. Im off all meds for gastric
reflux, unless you count my surgeons standard prescribed 4 daily tabs of Pepcid
Complete for the first year to provide calcium, etc. My blood pressure is down,
but not off those meds yet. Also Im off a lot of other meds for the boring list
of other problems I was too young at 52 to have.
Wasia:
In three months Ive only (ONLY?) lost 49 lbs and have been at a plateau for
WEEKS! However, that is 50% of my excess weight. I have to keep telling myself
that those who started out weighing in excess of 300-400 lbs will lose MUCH
faster than I will. Im told it takes EVERYONE 12-18 months to lose 75% of their
excess body weight and I will continue to lose but at a much slower rate because
I have less to lose. Its our body's way of pacing itself, and much healthier in
the long run. Hopefully this slowdown will give my skin time to the lack of fat
to cover and not sag too much. So, dont be bummed, be thankful for any loss
knowing there is more to come and most of all the health benefits. AND you can
vent anytime :).

There is a risk at anything you do. There is a risk to every medical
procedure. But the risk is very small and the benefits of this surgery far out
weight
the risk. The surgery has saved my life. I was a bigger risk for this surgery
because of my age and medical condition. I am 59 years old and weighed almost
400 lb., I was in a wheelchair, I have heart problems, an aortic aneurysm,
arthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic bronical asthma, very bad spinal stenosis and
spinal deterioration, and I WAS a diabetic, and I HAD High blood pressure that
was going to cause the aneurysm to rupture. I know longer have diabetes or high
blood pressure. I am even able to get around in the house now without my
wheelchair. I was doomed without the surgery and now I have hope for a better
life and more time with my family. I made the choice to take the chance and I
went through it all with no problems. I have not been sick at all. Even though I
weighed almost 400# I was still able to have a LAP. I was only in the hospital
2 days and as of this day I have lost132 pounds. This surgery has truely
saved and gave me back my life. If you mother-in-law is in fairly good shape
she
will probably add years to her life by having the surgery. Good luck and God
Bless.
