Wolfie...My progress so far

2008-03-31 16:30:02

Well I am doing wonderful! I have now lost 130 pounds and I have 69 more to
go to get to my final goal. I, as of today, can wear my mothers dresses. That
has never been a possibility until now. I look so much better. I get so many
compliments and so many words of encouragment from people. Went to a meeting
last night at my support group and everyone looked so good and everyone was so
happy. It felt good to be around such good people. We were paired up with pre-op
patients. I was paired up with a man named Floyd who was wanting to know
about all I had gone through. It is a good feeling to know that now you can help
people in the same way that you were helped back when. Paying back a good debt
gives one a good feeling. I have taken up bowling. I still try to ride my
bicycle when my knees allow. I am iron deficient and the doctor called in a
strong
iron and vitamin pill called ICAR C I think it is called. Plus I have been
eating some liver to boost things along. Fortunately I like liver. I remember
Mom telling me I was anemic as a baby and the doctor told her to feed me liver.
I was wondering though since my iron was down if it would affect your
menstrual cycle. I have heard it would. I dunno though. I did find a pic three
months
prior to surgery that I have been trying to get into the photos in the groups.
For some reason they wouldn't upload. I will keep working on it though. God
Bless you all and SKINNY WISHES! Love and hugs to you all...........

Thanks Rachel! I really appreciate it. I have a really hard time with iron.
My fumarate (GNC brand) constipates me so I don't take it everyday like I
should and my bloodwork is starting to show it. :( The Polysacc doesn't
cause constipation? With you taking two a day what are your iron levels

Sorry, Pam, I meant to say that . . .
They are OTC, available at VitaLady.com. The carbonyl iron is tablets that can
be swallowed, chewed or sucked. Polysacc is caps.
Big diff. tho . . . 6 carbonyl = 1 polysacc dosage wise. I believe th carbonyl
is only 25 mg.

Cindy asks about iron

2008-03-30 16:36:46

Cynthia -
First, what kind of iron are you taking? The type is vitally important . . .
Ferrous Sulfate . . . is always constipating, and not useable by anyone. Ditch
this.
Ferrous Fumarate, Iron Bisglycinate . . . better absorbability. Not as likely
to constipate.
Carbonyl Iron, Polysaccharide Iron . . . Best. Least constipating. I take 2
150 mg. caps of Polysacc everyday, and have no problems with constipation, or
tarry poop, or any of the other side effects of iron supps.
Also, take your iron with a protein shake, and Vitamin C, folic acid (if you
take it), and the sublingual B12. Nothing else except water for 1-2 hours. No
food, no coffee, no sodas, etc. I take it immediately after I get out of bed.
You caould also take it in the middle of the night, if you get up to pee. Or
mid-afternoon, on an empty tummy.
HTH,
Rachel

I'm still pre-op, but I've started taking what I think will be the
vitamins I'll need after surgery. I got a good multivitamin,
sublingual
B-12, calcium, biotin and iron. After only a few days, the
constipation
has already started...I'm assuming because of the iron. Is there any
way to get around this?

RE: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] Nauseous

2008-03-30 02:26:03

I started throwing up regularly about a week and a half after surgery. When I
eat things I am suppose to have I throw up, sometimes I throw up when I drink
water. I can eat eggs one day but throw them up the next day. It's weird. I
don't want to eat or drink for fear of throwing up. But you can't just stop
eating and drinking without serious problems. I still want food. I still crave
things but won't eat for the fear of throwing up. I've been through 3 upper
GI's. All clear. The last one showed my esophagus spasms. So I thought they
would do something about it instead they are sending me to have another test.
Right now my body is in starvation mode because I'm hardly eating anything so my
weight loss has stopped. I want to start feeling good so I can get my walking in
and start my weight loss again.

Re: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] Cindy - protein shakes . . .

2008-03-30 02:10:28

If you read the label, some of those protein drinks
really have a lot of calories in them. I choose a
drink that is low in calories-mine has 90 calories and
23 grams of protein. It tastes good. I get it from
vitalady.com The one that I really like is the very
cherry or something like that. The banana is really
good too. But the Atkins shakes have about 200
calories per can-if you were to consume 4-5 of those a
day, that's a lot of calories.

topic of gas from another group.

2008-03-29 10:45:33

Has anyone explored herbal remedies of gas, etc. with their surgeon? I
plan to talk to the surgeon about the following:
There are several that assist in gas relief and other ailments.
**Anise helps expel gas, promotes digestion and relieves nausea and
abdominal pain
Crush seeds into a powder and mix 1 tsp into 1 cup boiling water and drink 3
times a day.
**Fennel used as a digestive aid that can relieve cramps and gas. Mix 10 to
20 drops in water. Use warm water and a tsp of honey for a soothing daily
drink
**Chives are good for digestion and helps prevent anemia caused by iron
deficiency.
Eaten fresh
**Catnip helps promote relaxation, eases indigestion and gas and helps
control diarrhea.
1 - 3 capsules a day or 1 tsp in 1/2 c. water and drink as a tea.
**Buckthorn (Cascara Sagrada) relieves constipation overnight and has been
used for gallstones and liver ailments. 1 - 3 capsules daily.
**Caraway helps expel gas and reduces nausea by chewing the seeds 3 to 4
times a day.
**Basil reduces stomach cramps and nausea, relieves gas, promotes normal
bowel function and aids in digestion. Mix 1 tsp. of dried herbs in 1.2 c.
hot water, strain and drink as tea 1 to 2 cups as needed daily.
These are but a few that I have found.
Has anyone else taken an herbal approach to relieving some of the problems
experienced as a result of this surgery?
Thanks,
ICE

Re: Too many shakes?

2008-03-29 02:57:33

My Dr. is also having me do the high protein diet before surgery to
help shrink my liver. He told me it is so he can get around it with
out damaging it during the lap procedure. If I can not shrink it
before surgery it is safer for him to do it open. I dont care
either way as long as he can still do the surgery.
Good luck.

Re: RNY in 98

Susan,
While I am not out as far as you...it will be one year June 6th, I
am having the same trouble with eating. Though the most I have gained
was 5lbs., alot of the time I feel totally out of control when it
comes to food. My cravings and appetite came back at my 6 month
anniversary and every pound has been a bloody battle to take off
since then. I don't regret my decision though. I exercise every day,
HARD, so I think that is why I only gained 5 lbs.
Anyways, a couple of weeks ago, a friend and I decided to try an
experiment. I talked to my surgeon and she said she thought it was a
wonderful idea and to let her know if it works. And it DOES! I have
lost 8lbs. more in 2 weeks! And my friend has lost 5lbs.
So here it is....may not work for everyone but thank goodness it
works for me! I limit my calories to 1000 a day BUT.....I eat ALL
the fruits and veggies I want all day long and I don't count them as
calories. Unfortunately, I am a constant grazer. I am working on it
but if I go to long without eating I binge! Having those fruits and
veggies available lets me eat whenever I want but I am eating healthy
foods! I found some AWESOME ZERO CALORIE ranch dressing that I use as
dip! Yep...I said ZERO calorie! It's spectacular!!!! So this is
working so well for me that I am going to forever stick to it!
Good luck!

2008-03-28 05:08:43

Hi everyone. I haven't been up to posting for a while but now I
have a question and need to know if anyone else had this problem. I
had Open RNY on 4/7/04. Got home on 4/10, not sleeping and throwing
up brown mucus stuff. Went to surgeon, who told me to go to my
family doctor. Family doctor put me on an antibiotic (Biaxin)
because he said I had post surgery bronchitis with a slight
infection in the bottom of my incision. The antibiotic made me sick
to my stomach with an itchy rash for two days. Gave my stomach a
rest for two days and on this past Thursday started a new
antibiotic. Needless to say felt sick to my stomach again so I have
not taken the new antibiotic since Thursday. The problem is I can't
stop throwing up. Some days I can keep down my protein shakes and
soup, some days I can't. I just feel sick to my stomach all the
time. I called my surgeon's office this morning but haven't gotten
a call back yet. I was wondering if anyone else had this throwing
up three weeks after surgery and what did they do. Sorry for
the "sick" talk but I wanted to give you all the info to help figure
out what is wrong or if this is normal. Thanks for any info you can
give me.

wls away from home - DANA

2008-03-27 19:42:42

Dana
I had my WLS 200 miles away from home.
The morning after surgery, I passed the leak test and was to be discharged. I
asked to stay a second night b/c I didnt want to be so far away if something
went wrong. I was discharged 48 hrs after surgery and still wanted to stay in
town one more night, so stayed at he hotel my sis had been in. All I needed was
a fridge, microwave and coffeepot.
For the trip I brought bottled water, Crystal Light in bottles, canned shakes,
Cup of Soup packets (creamed chicken), yogurt, sugar-free jello cups, a couple
cans of broth, sugar free pudding, etd. I definitely overplanned. My fav food
is BBQ and my sis had takeout baby backs from Chili's right in front of me and
it didnt bother me one bit. Also brought lots of styrofoam cups for heating the
broth and cup of soup, lots of plastic utensils. If the hotel has comp
breakfast... try thinned oatmeal or grits ... It was okay on my prescribed diet,
but check w/your surgeon.
Be sure to bring comfy walking clothes/shoes. Perfect for me was knit bike
shorts and tshirts. You will get cabin fever and the more you can walk the
hotel/pool area and nearby shopping centers the better. If you can find the
tanktops with built in shelf bra, you will be comfy in that as opposed to tshirt
and bra.
Do not lay up in the room. Go for car rides, explore the city and walk, walk,
walk.
Good luck

Cindy - protein shakes . . .

2008-03-26 14:26:08

You'd prolly do better (lose more weight, and be more satisfied, if you eat 3-4
times a day. Atkins incution plan . . . protein, fat, very low carb vegs . . .
lettuce, mushrooms, some green beans, or broccoli . . .
And if you're using Stack, made with water, I don't think you can gain weight on
them.
Rachel
Subject: Too many shakes?
Is there such a thing as drinking too many shakes? I 'm still pre-op,
but I've been trying the samples and ordering so that I'll be
prepared
and have things already on hand, and so that I can shrink my liver
before surgery. Already I am getting addicted to the things. I've been
doing 3-4 a day, and could probably take another before bed. (I eat 1
small meal per day, mostly protein.) I am not losing much weight, only
a
pound or two, so I am wondering if you can do too many shakes. The
Champion stack ad says it is for weight gain or loss....how can it be
both?

RUSH to the phone to call you surgeon. He needs to know of any problems. It
may turn out to be nothing, but if it is a stricture or some other problem, he
can fix it easier before the problem becomes worse. I know some people have a
harder time than I did...my recovery was a breeze. But, it was repeated over
and over by my surgeon that no problem was too small to bother him with. This
is a SERIOUS surgery and overall complications are few, but the severity of many
complications could be reduced with prompt intervention. Also, I would call the
surgeon or his answering service to have him advise if a trip to the ER is
necessary. This is such a specialized area I wouldnt want someone without
knowledge of RNY guessing what to to to me.

RNY in 98

2008-03-26 04:01:05

Hi, I had my gastric bypass in 1998. I went from 298 on the day of
surgey to 130 in about 18 mos. effortlessly. BUT, I then went to
college to become a nurse and ate mostly out of candy
machines and fast food. I'm about 180 now. My goal is 140 as I
was kind of gaunt looking at 130. I went from a 26 to a 14, had a
tummy tuck and went down to an 8. Shortly after that I had
gallbladder problems and went down to a 6. Now, I have 10s that
are snug. UGH!
I was wondering if anyone else out there either personally, or
had a friend who needed to diet after RNY and what worked
best? I am starting the low-carb way of life today as well as
exercising. Since I had 3 feet of intestine bypassed I will be
interested to see if I lose faster than the average person.
Unfortunately, I got on my digital scale yesterday and it's kaput
but I gotta tell you, I didn't buy the bottled water yesterday, I rented
it so that's a good sign.
Any input would be appreciated.

Sarah,
Your body's getting used to the new configuration of your stomach and
intestines. You should keep in mind that your stomach is now much smaller that
it was before the surgery. You could be experiencing a slight depression due to
the fact that any kind of food intake has decreased greatly and your stomach is
looking for food. You should talk to your doctor, let him or her know how you
are feeling.

Gas

Hi Everyone. I am 4 days post op. I had the Lap RNY, not much pain
but a lot of discomfort with gas. When the surgeon put the gas in
my stomach to check for leaks, there were none but now I have this
gas in there I can't get rid of. I was told to walk and cough.
Well I have tried those and all my belly does is rumble but the most
of the gas is staying put. Sometimes I will burp a little but not
enough to make a difference. Anyone with any ideas to get rid of
this?
Thanks

a supply of all the fluids that your Doctor says you can have, your favorite
cup, a TV guide, your own pillow, and whatever your husband needs. LOL

I am new here and have a few questions :)

2008-03-21 23:29:50

I HOPE YOU GUYS LIKE NEWBIES!!!
Hi I am Mary, and I am pre-op. I am having my surgery May 4th here in
Las Vegas. I am full of all kinds of emotions right now, mostly
EXCITED!!! I really dont think I have any clue what I am in for. I am
so possitive that I just wont be one the few who things go wrong for
that I have a hard time even letting those thoughts into my head. I
have not told many people that I am having this surgery because I
didnt want to hear all the negitive things, which by the way, mostly
come from my girlfriends who are a size 5! They just dont understand.
I have been heavy most of my adult life and am so excited about
leaving that part of my life behind. The only family members who know
I am going to do this is my husband and children. The rest of my
family would NOT be supportive, therefore I dont need the "negitive
energy" passed my way. I have an appointment on April 29th. The big
pro-op appt. where my support person has to attend with me. I am
hoping that is where I will get all the info on the what not to do
and the do-do's because this far I have NOTTA. I dunno what to eat,
what not to eat, how to eat, what vitamins. I am right about 250 now,
and am really curious how the heck my skin is going to act. I know
people die from this, but I jut dont feel like this is anything but
the right thing for me to do. Well guys, I wont bore you anymore, but
I sure would like some advice, and some stories on what you went
through. and the one big question, Having to do it all over again,
whoud you still?
Thanks so much.
Mary

RE: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] Long.....

One way that I've learned to avoid those foods that got us into trouble
pre-op was to think of the grossest thing you could and imagine your
food there. If that doesn't work (and sometimes it doesn't) dump your
"trigger foods" or cravings into the cat litter or dog poop! I guarantee
you won't want to eat them ever again after that!!!

Too many shakes?

2008-03-21 04:39:22

Is there such a thing as drinking too many shakes? I 'm still pre-op,
but I've been trying the samples and ordering so that I'll be prepared
and have things already on hand, and so that I can shrink my liver
before surgery. Already I am getting addicted to the things. I've been
doing 3-4 a day, and could probably take another before bed. (I eat 1
small meal per day, mostly protein.) I am not losing much weight, only a
pound or two, so I am wondering if you can do too many shakes. The
Champion stack ad says it is for weight gain or loss....how can it be both?

Long.....

2008-03-20 09:08:12

All of this sounds like good advise but I am curious as to how easy it will
be to plan meals in advance if you don't know what your body will take or
what you will like etc....
Does this change often or once the surgery is over, you know what you do and
don't like and what your body will and will not accept?
I know that the first weeks and such are clear liquid and then liquids and
then soft foods but after that I would think that it would be harder to know
what you will want to make for meals.
I know for a fact that (if) when my husband and I have the surgery, there
won't be an option for the bad foods such as potato chips, cookies, cakes,
etc..... we just won't need them at all so why bother torturing ourselves
over it....... just let them go.
Also trigger foods... those foods that once you start, you can't stop...
those will not be bought either.
I am not afraid of foods that I like now if I don't like them after the
surgery... I just won't bother with them. If I don't like them, I won't
miss them.... Like, I have never liked brussel sprouts and I don't crave
them and I have never missed them LOL.....
I hope I won't like Oreo cookies when it is all said and done LOL
My daughter said, "How are y'all gonna make it without french fries from
Burger King?"
I said, I simply will not eat them and eventually the craving will go away
because I will not be craving the fats and the sugars. My body will get
over that "addiction" eventually and since I will have to be making food
choices based on protein first, then that will just have to come first.
I have never had any trouble with the "drinks".... the protein shakes and
such.. I have liked most that I have tried so I am thinking that this will
not be a problem. I hope that I will still like most of them when the
surgery has been done. If not, then I will find one or two that I do like
and stick to that.. But mostly I am leaning toward the protein powder that
has no taste so I can add it to other things. That seems most versatile.
My husband will eat whatever I make so I am not too worried about him..
The thing that worries me about him is that I think he will try and push the
fast food joints when I am not around simply because it is such a way of
life for him. I am ready to let that go but I don't believe he is.
BUT... that will have to be a decision HE makes, not me.... and if he dumps,
then maybe it will make him come around some. If not, then again, those are
decisions he has to make for himself.
I am SO READY to make some changes in my life by using this tool..... the
way I have been "living" (and I use the term lightly) is just not doing it!
So I am ready to make some radical changes in my own life.
I loved to work out when I was thinner and I miss it terribly. I miss yoga
because I can't get back up off the floor.... oh to have that back again!
~longing look to the future~
I remember being able to deal with stress better when I could work out.
I come up empty when I ask myself why I ever stopped and how I let myself go
so badly.
Granted, staying in shape was harder than sitting on the couch pigging out
or making good choices was a bit more time consuming than blindly driving
through the local drive through and mindlessly ordering something quick and
tasty..... but the prior was not a bad thing where as the latter was. Funny
how some things become habit faster than others.
Give me the tool and let me use it to its fullest extent! I am so so so
ready!
Thanks for letting me babble on. I guess this little email was more for me
to get it out than anything. I have asked myself why I want this surgery so
badly and this is part of the answer.

Re: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] My first experience with "dumping"

2008-03-20 04:04:20

Ray, I know what your saying about dumping. Had that experience. Not
pleasant. I also eat way too fast. I have to concentrate when eating. I
literally have to tell myself to slow down chew longer and eat slower. Cindy
Ray <myway@...
After eating just
two bites of a Diary Queen ice cream cake at work. About an hour or
so after eating it, I was driving home when I got a "cramp". I was
twenty minutes from home and knew that I was not going to make it
all the way home. I made a dash for a kwik shop and its restrooms.
Let me put it this way, I know that if I'm ever constipated, I can
eat a couple table spoons of ice cream and have fast relief... So
what does someone in the office bring in today, Village Inn French
Silk pie... I just had to turn away and go find something to do.
Although the ice cream tasted wonderful, I do not plan on doing that
anytime soon.
Three month check up is tomorrow, I'm curious what the doctor will
say? For me, this entire journey so far has been exciting with very
little to say in a negative light. For me, the worst thing is me
pacing myself when I sitdown to eat. Eating to fast is my worst
problem. Quantity still about 3/4 cup or less.

changing tastes

2008-03-19 17:23:03

Hi Dora,
I'm not a doctor and I don't play one on t.v. LOL
but an idea might be that the medication they use to knock you out for the
surgery, it might change your system somewhat.
For example, I've had carpel tunnel surgery on both my wrists' after the first
surgery I was fine, after the second one I found I was allergic to codine, even
tho after the first surgery I was able to take it with no problems.
So maybe between the physical changes that have been made to our bodies, along
with the anastethia (typo) that somehow messes with the bodies "system".
Hope that made sence! LOL

Portion Control - The Dangers of Grazing

2008-03-19 05:39:45

A moderator in another list I'm in sent this, I thought someone might be
intrested in it....
Cynthia
Portion Control - The Dangers of Grazing
We encourage you to plan your meals in advance, to shop for the things you need
to ensure that you have good quality, well-balanced meals. And then you should
eat three meals each day and avoid eating between meals.
Our Success HabitsT study shows that grazing is a common behavior of those who
regain weight following weight loss surgery. We have used the term 'grazing' for
many years but recognize that some may not know what we are talking about
without some explanation. "Grazing" is the term commonly used to describe
mindless or unplanned eating. Cows out in the pasture graze all day long.
By grazing, little by little, snack-by-snack, bite-by-bite, unwanted pounds
easily sneak up on us.
Many faltering patients report not eating regularly scheduled, well thought-out
meals, but instead, they eat haphazardly off and on throughout the day. Rather
than eating 3 planned meals each day, they eat a little here and a little there
and, consequently, never feel hungry and never feel full. And as we discussed
earlier, satiety (or feeling full) is essential to our well-being and has a
direct correlation to our success in using the tool we have to help us eat less.
We weight loss surgery patients cannot eat much at one time, but we can eat the
wrong foods all day long. And that may result in consuming more calories than we
need in a given day. A simple mathematical formula determines the changes that
will occur in our weight: calories in - calories out! If we eat more than we
expend in energy, we gain weight. By grazing, little by little, snack-by-snack,
bite-by-bite, unwanted pounds easily sneak up on us.
But knowing what we should do is only half of the battle. With such a small
stomach capacity, grazing remains a constant temptation for many patients. And
often our hurried lifestyles make it difficult to plan and prepare well
thought-out meals. It's not easy to take the time to sit down, relax and enjoy a
peaceful meal. So, we know what we should and shouldn't do; we know the dangers,
but how do we break the grazing habit? Here are some questions for you to
consider and some tips from patients who have learned to successfully avoid
grazing and have adopted good eating habits.
What time of day am I most likely to graze?
It is likely that the temptation to graze comes at the same time each day. By
identifying when these tempting times are, you can anticipate them and redirect
your activities as needed to arrange for different circumstances, surroundings,
activities, etc.
What activities might be encouraging me to graze?
When the temptation to graze hits, observe what is going on around you. Are you
watching TV? Are you at the movies? Driving in your car? Identify those
activities and make changes or prepare for them in advance by making better food
choices or alternative activities readily available when the urge hits.
What am I grazing on? And, how did it get here?
Have you ever wanted a particular food simply because it was there? If certain
foods are difficult for you to pass up, don't buy them! Making this decision one
time at the grocery store will prevent you from having to decide again every
time you walk past the kitchen. It's important to prepare for times when you
need a little pick-me-up. Plan for them in advance by buying snacks that are
good for you such as cheese sticks, jerky, vegetables, nuts, etc.
What type of food am I craving (i.e. salty, sweet, chewy, cold, crunchy)?
Learn to listen to your body. It's one of the most important skills you can
develop for a healthy lifestyle. Knowing what your body is craving will give you
clues as to what your body needs. For example, your body may need more salt or
perhaps you have expended the refined sugar in your body and so now you're
craving it.
How do I feel when I'm tempted to graze?
Often our cravings are to satisfy emotional needs. Notice how you feel when
you're tempted to graze. Are you tired? Stressed? Bored? Anxious, or nervous? Be
aware of these emotions, then identify and practice alternative ways to soothe
them, or alternative activities you can do to take your mind off food between
meals.

Re: just keeping in touch and depressed but losing weight

2008-03-19 01:05:22

Janet,
I understand how you feel, I went through a similar situation after
my surgery in 1999. First, I suffered an infection which had to
heat from the inside-out. That meant 3 months of visits from
nurses, twice a day. Second, I came down with a small bowel
obstruction 2 months after surgery, spending 3 more days in the
hospital. After which my surgeon had me step back one level of food
(soft foods and diary products) and I decided to consume only milk
and yogurt. That put me in the hospital, again, with double vision
and a gait my walk. At this point I was diagnosed with Ataxia (loss
of coordination) and I still walk with a cane and may need a walker
soon (I am 42). What still bothers me is the fact that I did this
to myself. To make matters worse, in the past 3 years, I have put
back on 80 pounds and exercise is not an option because one of the
reasons for my surgery was osteoarthritis in both knees.
You are not alone. Janet, if you someone to Just listen I am here,
I will listen.

Re: the post below and the "car battery and red meat" post . . .
Yep, I've heard that Coke will clean your car battery posts, and break down red
meat. Baking soda will also clean your car battery posts . . . It's what I use.
I don't run from baking soda, and my husband drinks it for indigestion,
occasionally. I sometimes brush my teeth with it. Lemon juice and salt will
clean up a tarnished old penny really nicely. I still eat salad dressing and
scampi.
Spit will break down red meat, too, as will pineapple and papaya. What do you
think that meat tenderizer is? Pineapple or papaya enzymes, usually.
Tenderizing marinades? Wine and vinegar, anything acidic. I still use
pineapple, wine and vinegar. (I hate papaya.) As a matter of fact, I eat
something pickled, or use vinegar almost every day. I frequently eat lemon
juice, lime juice, and grapefruit juice, either in marinades, salad dressings,
or a squit in water. My regular caesar salads always have added lemon. Citrus
juices will both clean corrosion, and break down meat. As a matter of fact,
meat can be cooked in citrus, without any added heat. (Ceviche! yum!)
Come on, folks . . . *anything* in excess is a problem. Did you know that
unsweet tea (not necessarily to excess) causes iron absorption problems, and can
result in anemia? That too much water (swallowed) will *KILL* you? <evil grin
Basically, I eat very little in the way of simple carbs . . . I cannot eat
sugars, potatoes, milk or cream (unless it's just enough for coffee) wheat
bread, any wheat products, oatmeal, etc . . . which means no breads, no pastas,
no sandwiches, no nothing . . . I am happy with my way of life, so I'm not
complaining, just pointing out that some of you eat things *I* would never think
of eating.
Try to keep things in perspective, OK? <grin
anyone else, in reasonable amounts. Except maybe with pouch gas pains . . .
<weak grin
ice, or a bottle that had the seal opened once and sits in the fridge for a day
or two are much easier on the gas (burping) issue. I am fighting off a
cold/sinus thing right now, pushing fluids, and have had several homemade
Italian sodas . . . strawberry. And yes, I still drink water. BUt drinking
other things gets more fluids thru me.
So, YMMV. Having done my research, and knowing the possible consequences, I
drink soda. It isn't going to hurt me. YOu can make your own decisions on it .
. . but remember that you can't judge everyone by your experiences. (And no,
I'm not perfect, I still try to apply my experiences to others. But I'm
learning.)
Oh, and you know what? I sometimes put soda, or seltzer in my protein powder!
<grin

Hi everyone! Just a quick update, So far no problems really, I am
eating between 2 and 2.5 oz 3 x a day and mostly protein but can eat
anything really. Still having a problem getting all my fluids in
though. After the first week I was able to go to tylenol during the
day and the vicoden at night when I slept ( I would sleep the whole
nite :-) I am out now so have been getting up in the middle of the
nite to take tylenol as pain is waking me up.
By the 3rd week wasn't having too many pains was able to walk around
pretty good, bend over a little, but yesturday it was like they
turned back the clock, I am having sharp little pains off and on when
I am sitting, standing doesnt really matter. I am thinking I have
over done it by sortin laundry, picking up etc. The good news is I

2008-03-14 18:41:47

mentally it is hard for me to face the fact that it is hard for me to
get dressed and do the normal things like shop and bath myself go to
the bathroom clean the house and i get depressed alot knowing the
susituation well not improve all the constant wound care and
bandages and dressing changes. i am learning how to walk with a
walker adn i ned a wheelchair i cannot stand for morethan 5 minutes
so this means i cannot return to my job as a hairdresser. i have
physical therapy 3 times a week.. i have to have protein in my
feeding tube 10 times a day....i miss not being able to eat or drink
anything its been over a year and the problem will not change...but
the good news is i have been eating and spitting it out justfor the
flavor and taste can anyone blame me..that has helped me mentaly alot
and food never tasted so good their are many other things wrong
toobut it goes with my territory not everyone elses.....
the good news is i have lost a lot of weight i am still big i feel
the fat has just shifted lol he he i haveto laugh...
my starting weight was 427 i am now 247 so i am down quite a bit i
lose about 30 pounds every 2 months i cant wait to get in the 100
numbers 199 would be great.he he havent seen any of these numbers in
a while..all the skin has dropped around my butt dropped down so i
have no butt..face neck and arms look great but stomach is terrible
all the bandages and feeding tube and colostomy bag are just their
plus skin graft on stomach because they could not close me up. so no
stomach muscles it just hangs..i am getting out to the car now ot go
for short rides which is good but i cant keep transfering to car to
wheelchair it wears me out to go shopping...well thanksfor letting me
vent i am getting a little stronger it just takes time and i have to
set my mindset that this is what i have to live with so i just thank

Re: changine tastes

2008-03-13 12:03:01

I DIDN'T BELIEVE MY TASTES WOULD CHANGE... BUT BOY, OH BOY... DO
THEY EVER!!!
i used to love anything sweet... now sweet makes me ill. eggs were
great in the past...now i can't eat them. chicken was my fav
meat... i can't stand it. i loved the smell and taste of garlic...
now i have to leave the room when my family is cooking with it or
eating it. bread makes me sick... but rice cakes are ok. i used to
love american cheese, now i can't stand it. i hate tuna now... and
used to love it.... but interestingly, i had raw oysters at a
restaurant a couple of days ago, and I LOVED THEM... they didn't
make me sick, in fact they made my tummy feel good... i was happy
about the protein i was getting with very few calories.
your tastes definately DO change!!!!!

Question.........

2008-03-13 02:13:03

Hi all,
Have yet another question....
I called my pharmacy to see if they had filled my Wellbutrin ( for weight loss,
yet another "hoop" to get ins. approval, i hope ). They hadn't, the doc needs to
get insurance approval first. I called the doctors office, they hadn't gotten
the request from the pharmacy! sheeeeeeeeesh! They finally received the
info.... now the question....
The drs. office has to put: "depression due to not able to loose weight" for the
insurance to approve this medication.
Now, if depression is in my medical record can this keep me from getting surgery
approval? (physc eval)

I have had no problems with popcorn. That is actually a fun food for me. At
first I thought I wasn't allowed to have it, but my doctor said that was
fine. I was pretty happy about that.

Re: TAZO PASSION TEA

2008-03-12 08:03:13

you can buy it at starbucks... a box of tea bags is $4.95 for 24
bags. i brew 8 bags for a gallon of water... it would probably
taste better with 12 bags per gallon, but i was being cheap and
trying to get 3 gallons out of one box - but i think i'm gonna start
using 12 bags.
i also found tazo tea bags at albertsons (here in california) - it
wasn't any cheaper than starbucks.

My first experience with "dumping"

2008-03-11 17:51:05

I think I had my first mild episode of dumping...

The test is called an MMPI-2, it's to make sure that you will be
able to handle the effects of the surgery both mentally and
emotionally. Its about 567 True or False. Its not that hard all
you have to do is answer honestly, which I did, I just changed my
mind about a couple of the answers and that's what I'm worried about.

I am so glad to hear good stories about BTC. We have two in PA near
me and have hear nothing but horror stories. If the surgery goes
well, they are great. If a complication should happen (which it
could very easily)they are not a hospital and can't deal with it. The
other complaint seems to be, the patient never meets the actual
surgeon. I am so glad that is not the case all over.

Re: challenge

I would change nothing..it sounds great. For me being a rny, we
don't absorb the fat like we use to. The only thing you have to
remember is...you just don't eat as much. I am 11 weeks out and I
have no trouble with breads and haven't for a while now. I chose not
to eat them often because they fill me up too soon and I want to
taste the other good stuff.

challenge

2008-03-09 01:21:47

Ok everybody.... we have discussed the surgery and the insurance and all
that stuff and gotten some wonderful information.
I have a new challenge if anyone it up to taking it on....
I found a recipe that I would like to try but since I am considering this
surgery, I will have to change my way of thinking... so.... here is the
challenge....... how would you alter this recipe
to accomodate post WLS and the pouch rules?
(The only thing I would like better would to have a white sauce instead of
the green sauce (like what is on the chicken enchiladas).... not sure
though)
Shrimp and Crab Enchiladas
Submitted By: Lisa L.
Enchiladas made with shrimp, crab and Jack cheese. This is a great dish with
an international flair.
Prep Time: 15 Minutes
Cook Time: 45 Minutes
Ready In: 1 Hour
Makes: 4 to 6 servings
Ingredients
12 (12 inch) flour tortillas
1 pound medium shrimp - peeled and deveined
1 (6 ounce) can crab meat, drained
8 ounces Monterey Jack cheese, shredded
1 (20 ounce) can green enchilada sauce
1 (16 ounce) container sour cream
1 bunch green onions, chopped
Directions
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
2. Lay tortillas on a flat surface. In the middle of each tortilla place
cheese, crab, and shrimp (ration the ingredients so that each tortilla will
contain an equal amount of cheese, crab, and shrimp. Make sure to set aside
some cheese to sprinkle on top of the tortillas). Roll the tortillas so that
the seafood cheese mixture is held securely inside of the tortilla.
3. Place rolled tortillas (enchiladas) side by side in a 9x13 inch baking
pan.
4. Pour green enchilada sauce over all of the enchiladas, the green sauce
should cover the enchiladas completely. Sprinkle the remaining cheese over
the enchiladas.
5. Cover an d bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 30 minutes.
6. Uncover the enchiladas and cook an additional 15 minutes. Serve hot garnished
with sour cream and green onions.

2008-03-07 14:33:36

Why is it that water makes you sick?

Re: can't stand sweet anything

2008-03-07 13:16:12

My doctor said the same thing that other liquids also can hydrate
you. Thats whats so nice about some of the protein drinks too. The
one thing the dr and nutrionist warned me about was caffeine. It's
okay for me to have a little coffee BUT I cannot count it towards my
water because the caffiene can dehydrate you. Anyways, its good to
try different drinks till you find what works for you and what
tastes good. WLS isn't suppose to be torture to our taste buds.

that scared me). I went in and he said it looked slightly irregular and he
wants me to have a treadmill test. He said it could be normal for me, or it
could
be the blood pressure med I'm taking. I hope everything is OK and I hope

Researching Seeing Surgeon in September

2008-03-06 02:20:39

I just wanted to introduce myself and thank everyone you guys have
helped me make my decision without even knowing it. My Cardiologist
suggested the surgery because of my family hisory, and I am set up to
see a surgeon for consult in Sept. so I have been doing alot of
research and I came upon this web site and it has been very helpful.
It's very hard to discuss such personal feelings with people who
don't have a weight problem and to read your journals and realize
other people are going thru the same thing and there is something
that can be done is very helpful. I just wish I could have gotten an
appointment before September, now that I know it will probably be
another 6 months or so after that before the actual surgury. I guess
I'm looking a this time next year before I even get the surgery done
by the timeline of everyones journals from the original consults to
the actual surgerys.

Re: incision PAIN, PAIN, PAIN!

2008-03-05 21:00:19

I had the exact same problem and have 3 solutions to offer:
-Lidocaine patches. These are prescription patches that you place
NEAR the incision, never directly on it. They dull pain a lot
(think novaCAINE) around the incision. They made a big difference
and can be cut to any size/shape so you can put them all around the
incision.
-Mepalex border dressings. These are silicone dressings that are
soooo very easy on the skin and so comfortable. You can also get
them wet. My skin was raw from the tape and these really helped.
Just type in MEPALEX on Google and you can buy them online. They
are pricey, but if your Dr. writes a letter of med necessity, your
ins. may cover them.
-For really bad incision pain, I had liquid percocet. It definitely
helped, but be careful as this has addictive qualities.
Best of luck,
Alicia

incision PAIN, PAIN, PAIN!

2008-03-05 16:34:45

6.5 weeks post-op... my incision is still open and being irrigated
every day! it's still draining and the doctor says we cannot allow
it to close because the fluid will build up (again) and infect
(again) and explode (again).
i still have sharp pains around the incision (open RNY - incision
from my sternum to into my belly button).
my neck is killing me because i have been hunching over for 6 weeks
because it hurts my incision when i sit up straight or walk not
hunched over.
when will the pain stop? when will the wound stop draining???? i
suppose i should look at the bright side: my actual stomach is
fine.. i haven't trown up at all... and i am going potty... but the
incision thing has really been a nightmare.

can't stand sweet anything

2008-03-05 03:32:35

since water makes me sick, my doctor said i could drink crystal
light. i drank tons of crystal light when i got home from the
hospital... but now (6.5 weeks post op) i can't stand crystal light
or anything sweet!
i read that second book by Carnie Wilson and she kept saying that
ONLY water can hydrate you... that no matter what else you drink,
you still have to have 64 oz of water.... thank God my doctor
doesn't agree with that... he says that any drink without sugar
still counts as my "water" that i must have daily... and he says i
only need to drink 32 oz per day.
i was so worried about how i would stay hydrated until i discoverd
TAZO PASSION TEA at starbucks. of course i was going broke buying
it there until i started brewing it myself for ice tea. IT TASTES
SOOOOOO GOOD! i don't put any sweetner in it, and i love it. it is
just herbs and has no caffiene.
but i can't stand the stupid flintstone vitamins because they are
way too sweet. so i need to find some vitamins that aren't so
sweet. also, i need to find some chewable "C" that isn't so
sweet... i got some at walmart and they are TERRIBLE!
i can't wait to hear from all of you about this stuff... i really
helps to know that we are all going through the same thing.

First, I want to thank Diane for beginning this site. I'm less than 2 weeks=
away from having
my surgery, and finding support online was hard. But it was worth the wait =
to find all the
excellent ppl involved here.
And I just wanted to introduce myself.
My name's Mike, and I've always been a little heavy all my life. I'm 29, an=
d the weight
began to really pack on 4 years ago. I was extremely depressed, especially =
after all the
dieting, gym memberships (my wife and I went for an entire year, she shrunk=
and I went
nowhere.) It was a little comforting when I recently found out I had Hypogo=
nadisma
major reason for my symptoms and gain. My heads been spinning with everythi=
ng that I've
been finding out about myself. It's very odd to have Dr's tell you that you=
may have
become a totally different person (emotionally and physically) if you hadn'=
t been hit in the
head with a bat at age 12 (true story). They say that's where my Hypogonadi=
sm stems
fromsharp blow to the head around age of puberty. I did go through puberty=
(thank god)
but slowly after that, my body and brain made less and less testosterone un=
til, finally,
about 5 years ago it stopped making it all together. Resulting in sudden we=
ight gain, loss
of muscle and bone mass. With this surgery, I'll lose the weight I could ne=
ver do on my
own, plus I'll be able to have Hormone therapy that will work (because I'll=
be the size of a
normal person.)
Well, I have to get back to work. Thanks for listening everyone. I'll be ba=
ckand often!
