Finally got Approved!

2008-04-30 18:09:18

I do not know if you all remember me or not, but I was the one that
was having so much trouble with Blue Care Network. After the State
of Michigan reversed their decision they advised that they would be
appealling in the Circuit court within the 60 day deadline. They did
not end up doing so. Just a stall tactic.
The next thing was that there was no in network doctor that performed
the LAP in Michigan. But they did finally approve the out of network
doctor that I had been seeing.
MY SURGERY DATE IS MAY 25TH! I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT IT IS REALLY GOING
TO HAPPEN THIS TIME.

THANKS FOR THE INSPIRATION..MIMI
dcorb12 <dwayne.corbett@...
it has been a minute since i posted but i have been reading what
you guys have to say and i appreciate everything that you all have
had to say... thank you. I will be 29 on may 12th and had gastric
bypass on 12/16/03. 3 months before that i was 419lbs. I was able
to get down to 390lbs before surgery and as of today i am 285lbs. I
am happy to say that so far i have had little in the way of side
effects... when i tell my doctor this he tends to toot his own horn
and say thats because he is sooo good at what he does, then he adds
that i have been pretty good at following the directions that he has
gave me. I have to admit, my doctor wasnt nearly as strict with me
as i have read from you guys... i was on a liquid diet for 3 weeks
then i started eating small amounts of meat and vegetables.. he told
me to stay away from beef and brocolli for another week or two
because they are hard to digest so i did that. everytime i asked him
if i could do anything the was borderline... he answer would be..
try it... if it doesnt work... dont do it again!!! Nowadays, i can
eat a pretty good variety of foods... the one thing i have stayed
away from is fried foods or just greasy foods all together...i have
changed from my beloved chinese food when i want to splurge to
japanese food because it seems to be made much better. My eating
habits needs to get alot better, i still dont really eat
breakfest... just lunch and dinner.. in between that i OD of fruits
and such (i have heard that i should eat alot of fruits.. but man i
need something to substitute the NO SUGAR thing). u name a fruit, i
have blended it. I also take a protein drink on occasion usally i
mix the protein with one bannana a little cinnimon, nutmeg, vanilla
extract and about 1/3 1% milk and some ice. I know it seems like
alot but without that stuff it tastes like soy milk and i cant
really get into that. I also go to the gym at least 4 times a day..
when i was cleared i was going 6 times but i have brought that down
since i have started. Since i have started going to the gym my
weight loss has slowed down but it seems to be due to an increase in
muscle mass because my clothes are still getting to big at an
alarming rate. So far i have gone down from a size 58 waist to a
size 46. One of the good things about my turn about in life is that
i see where doing this surgery has helped out my overall enjoyment
of life... it feels good to be able to walk up some steps and not
have to sit for 30 seconds to catch my breath, it feels good to be
able to chase my son around... and even though i have never been a
food lover... it feels good to still be able to go out and enjoy a
good meal with my wife... the fear was that i wouldnt not be able to
do that anymore but it is still a nice part of life... and my wife
has taken on a challenge of her own and decided she wanted to loose
weight and as of today she has loss a little over 30lbs down from
185lbs... congradulations baby!!! ;-) anyway, i dont want anyone to
think this is all a walk in the park... it is hard and something you
have to deal with all day every day, but you have to understand that
most of this is mental and u have to want to do this.. the surgery
isnt the end.. its just the beginning. but if u do what u need to
do the way it needs to be done... then it will be the beginning of
something truly wonderful and blessed. The rules are good
guidelines.... but learn your body and learn what makes you tick.
My surgeon kept my life pretty simple with his rules and that was
the trick for me... to be able to live my life without looking at a
do's and dont does list...
sorry to take up so much space.. but hey.. its been a minute... sooo
HEY LOL
take care.. dee

Actually Rachel I bet you're exactly right. My husband and I used to
use Carb Control EMS shakes, high protein, low sugar, and only about
100 cals. I guess because my doctor's office tends to want us away from
the protein drinks I focused on the milk...go figure :). Thanks,
there's so much to re-learn :). What does your 320/305/160/150 mean? I

Carrie and milk . . .

2008-04-28 23:17:43

Carrie -
I assume you've been told to drink all that milk for protein? If so, please do
some research, and consider switching to very low sugar protein drinks, made
with water? If you switch, your protein intake will be higher, your sugar
intake lower, and your weight loss faster.
I do 6 protein shakes/day, each is about 4-5 ounces, so we're drinking
comparable amounts of fluid for comparison.
Each of my shakes contains 30 grams of protein, and less than 4 grams of sugar.
So that's 180 grams of protein, 24 grams of sugar.
By comparison, your milk totals only 32 grams of protein, and a whoppong 48
grams of sugar.
So, I get 6 times as much protein, and only half the sugar. I believe that the
sugar in milk will make *me* fat again, too.
Great tasting, safe protein drinks can be purchased from Vitalady.com, they also
sell sample sizes of all of 'em.
Good luck with weight loss, with protein intake, and happy losing.

Mary,
My suggestion-write down what you eat. This way you will think about
what you put in your mouth. There are sugar-free sweets available that
could satisfy your cravings. Talk to your doctor or even a
nutritionist, they may have suggestions to help.

Re: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] Facing Surgery

2008-04-28 13:41:28

Congrats and best wishes on your upcoming surgery Susan! Just start
getting your list ready and make a trip to Walgreens/Target to get
everything you'll need post-op, it will make it a lot smoother. Things
like sippy cups, Gladware 4 oz. containers, little 1 oz. medicine cups,
baby spoons, and more will all help with your relearning afterwards.
For the hospital, make sure to have something comfy to change into and
a robe and maybe something to read. I brought way too much to the
hospital and really felt more like resting than anything. I'm sure
you'll get plenty of advice between now and then. Again best wishes!

Denied

2008-04-28 09:22:32

Well I was denied by my insurance for the surgery today. We started
out with UnitedHealthCare and the company switched to BCBS. I was
denied because there is a 12 month waiting period for pre existing
conditions. The clause can be waived with a Certificate of Coverage
from UHC. I sent that in after I was denied coverage for the
surgery. Do you think they can still deny me and make me wait the
year now? Or do they have to waive the clause since I have sent in
the Certificate of Coverage?
I hope I don't have to appeal because I can only do it once. I want
to call and find out if they will approve me for the surgery now or
do I have to appeal first.
I am scared I am going to screw this up. If anybody out there has
any ideas or any information or experience please email me and let
me know.
Thanks,
Michele
Still looking forward to a new life.

Basil White's protein shake

2008-04-27 20:30:10

Hi all!
I was surfin last week, and found this site, this guy is funny, and informative
at the same time.
I thought this might intrest a few.....
Basil White's protein shake
http://www.basilwhite.com/gastric/
Many people have asked me for my protein supplement regimen, including people
who want to lose weight who aren't contemplating the surgery.
Here it is. I think it tastes like chocolate cake batter.
take a cup
add 4 ounces of water
add 2 scoops of chocolate 100% pure whey protein (available at vitamin stores
and some grocery stores - don't let them talk you into the vitamin-fortified
crap)
add 1 scoop of pure soy powder (also available at vitamin stores and some
grocery stores - you need linoleic & Alpha-linolenic fatty acid every day, and
soy products containing fat have both, and they're really hard to find from
anything else on the planet except for soy)
add 1-2 tablespoons of No Sugar Added Nesquik chocolate powder
Mix this stuff up with a spoon until it's the consistency of pudding.
Add more water until it's the consistency you want. Mixing the ingredients in
this way eliminates little pockets of dry unmixed ingredients.
Two of these shakes gives me the 60 grams of supplemental protein a day my
nutritionist recommended for male gastric bypass patients (50 grams for women).
I split it out over two or three glasses over the day.
It's very yummy, and eliminates all of my desires for food for about two hours.
It's even better if you mix it with an electric "boat motor" hand blender. Add a
banana if you have one.
This recipe has
374 calories
65 grams of protein
4 grams of fat
3 grams of sugar.
Hugs,
Cynthia

Re: help igained a pound?

2008-04-27 07:44:03

Tracey,
From the replies already posted, I've got to agree with them.
Different scales almost always give a varying degree of measurement.
I use one scale to base my weight on and that's it. A one pound
difference, in my opinion, is not anything to get excited about. In
your first few weeks you're going to have loses and plateaus. Small
or even extended plateaus. Even if they last for a week or maybe
two, because of the mere fact that your calorie intake and increase
in metabolism is cahnge the chemistry of your body, you should see a
downward movement in weight again. Please try to relax, I too hate
to see no change as I step on the scale about every 5 or 6 days, but
by the time I step on it again, I'm down 2 to 4 pounds. So relax,
continue on with your puree diet, I know that is not pleasant but
it sounds like you're on the home stretch before you return to real
food. P A T I E N C E. Good Luck,
-Ray

A Few Questions...

2008-04-27 06:52:59

I am considering having bypass surgery and want to ask those of you
who've already had surgery a few things.
I had the Lap Band implanted in January '03 and lost 60 lbs in about
6 months, but had a lot of trouble with throwing up, which was my
worst nightmare. No matter how small of a bite or how much I thought
I chewed things like meat and salad, I would throw up. I felt like
everything got stuck about half way down my throat and it would
either finally go down or I would throw up. I was so miserable and
in December '03 had my doctor remove all the fluid from my band.
I know the Band works for many people and am not putting it down or
trying to get into a discussion about which procedure is better. I'd
just like to know what kinds of foods you can eat after surgery and
if you have problems with anything and do you get the "stuck in your
throat" feeling when you eat?
I haven't made me mind up, yet, if I'm going to have bypass. I have
an appointment with the surgeon on May 17th and plan on talking with
him and discussing my options.
I am curious about the "dumping" syndrome -- does that only happen
when one eats sugar, or is it just different from person to person?
Also, my biggest struggle now is with eating a lot of chocolate and
drinking too much Coke. When I was having trouble eating almost
everything, I felt justified in eating only the things I could eat
that would go down easily, which was candy, etc., all unhealthy
things.
Thank you for any and all comments and suggestions. I have gained
back 30 lbs. and feel so frustrated and hopeless and like a failure.

tracey, are you at a 21 lb weight loss on your scale and gaining that pound on
your doc's scale? i always went by the same scale (mine)...i always weighed more
on my doc.s scale and my primary physician scale. you will be weighing on your
scale mostly..so just go by your scale weight and when you visit the doc and he
tells you a different weight..just do like i do...agree with it (even though it
bugs ya) and just go by your scale pam

RE: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] help gained a pound?

2008-04-25 22:23:48

Tracey,
It is normal to have some weight gain occasionally. I am 3 months out
and I have had 2 plateaus since my surgery and one of them lasted 2 weeks.
Just keep doing all of the right things and it will be great in the end. I
have lost 60 pounds even though I had 2 plateaus. Don't get discouraged.
Also if you notice, your cloths are getting big. Even when I was not loosing
weight I was still loosing inches.

1 Month Post-Op! :)

2008-04-25 08:56:05

I'm so excited, I'm 1 month post-op (technically Sunday) and I've lost
33 pounds and 17.5", I'm back to exercising, eating most foods except
meats and breads, drinking all my milk (32 oz. a day) and feel great!
My skin, hair, and nails have never been so healthy :).
This board has been very motivating for me and I'm so glad I stumbled
upon it. My local support group (though I'm sure there are tons I'm
not aware of) doesn't meet until the 2nd Thursday of the month and
this gives me a place I can post to in between.
Everyone keep up the great work and those of you not doing so great
just hang in there, I've known plenty of people that didn't get off to
a good start but came through shining!

Re: can I still eat sweet stuff and loose weight?

2008-04-24 08:03:53

Mary,
I am 105 days post op from an RNY. I've lost over 82 pounds and have
at least that much more to go.
I have a big sweet tooth, but, there is no way that I want to go down
that road again. I just put myself through major surgery to correct
my obesity. I have followed the physician's advice and would consider
myself fortunate to have had little problems with eating most
anything. Yes, I have tasted cake, ice cream, & chocolate after
surgery, but I cannot and will not let myself start up on the sugar
train. I guess I know myself to well that if I would start eating
sugars, its hard telling how or when I would stop. Besides that, I do
have minor dumping with refined sugar foods.
Protein, water, fruits and veggies are my staples. For a treat I'll
have a Ritz with peanut butter or popcorn. Actually, a cold navel
orange or banana usually takes care of any sugar lusts.
For being six weeks out, I would strongly encourage you to stick to
the physician's/dietitian's plan and get that will power set to about
a 10 when it comes to the useless calories that sugars supply.
My 2 cents.

RE: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] can I still eat sweet stuff and loose weight?

2008-04-23 23:17:59

I think it is all to easy to go back to bad habits. Sweets make a lot of
people sick but they don't make me sick either. I buy myself sugar free
candies. Russle Stover's makes some really good products. When I get a
craving I have one or two pieces of sugar free candy. I just try my best to
stay away from the bad stuff. I still will have a taste of something
occasionally and I think that is okay. I think of it this way, for me this
surgery was my last hope so I am not going to do anything to mess it up.
Just keep telling yourself everytime you want to eat bad stuff, what your
goal is and "just say no to bad food". I hope this helps.

RE: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] New to the group...hoping for info

2008-04-22 15:20:22

It will depend on your insurance. My insurance requires that I have doctor
supervised weight loss. But one thing I would think about, is trying to lose
weight through WW or some program. You might be successful at it and you won't
know until you try. I would be very careful making this surgery your first try.

Insurance update...

2008-04-22 07:03:48

You gotta love this. I call my insurance company and they show no sign that
they have ever received anything from my hospital Vanderbilt. I have put a call
into the person who does the pre-cert for my surgeon to find out what is going
on. You would think that if they started the pre-cert process when they were
supposed to on 4/26 my insurance company would show something in their records.
I will keep you updated as I hear stuff. How frustrating. It is bad enough to
have to fight with the insurance company without those who are trying to help
you in the end hinder you. Uggghhh.

New to the group...hoping for info

2008-04-22 05:23:49

Hi, My name is Joe, and I have recently started my quest to have
gastric bypass surgery. I am 5'8", and weigh 360ish. I have a BMI
of 54.7.
Since I have never really done a weight loss program
(Weightwatchers, etc), will I be made to try that first. Or will they
accept me as a patient in need of a drastic intervention since I
am 200 lbs over weight, with diabetes II, sleep apnea, and gout?
I need your help....

Congratulations Steve!!! You may not be under 300 pounds, but you have
accomplished alot. 302 pounds is a lot of weight for you to get off and it
still be off 2 years later. Hang in there. You will get this weight off too,
it is just a matter of time. You should be very happy and proud of yourself.
Wow!!

The reason has to do with the fact the bread takes a lot longer to break down
and it sits in the pouch or stomach for quite a while.

Hi all,
Just popped out of lurkerdom to say Happy Two Year Anniversary to me! I had
hoped to be under 300 lbs. by now, but I've had really bad back flare-ups that
have caused my exercise to be pretty sporadic for the last two months. Anyway,
I today weigh in at 303 lbs., from a starting weight of 605--total loss of 302
lbs...so I am technically 50.08264% the man I used to be! :)

Is it wrong to call my insurance company and find out where they are in the

want to make them angry, but I really want to know.

Re: a food question

2008-04-20 12:59:25

Even after 2 years bread gives me a problem and I try to stay away
from it. I don't know how "normal" this is but bread makes a big
dough ball in my pouch and sits there forever. I can eat crispy
crackers, pretzels, popcorn and no problem. Yesterday, I ate 1/2
bagel and was "uncomfortable" for about 2 hours after. If I eat any
bread at all I try to eat a crust of homemade bread or hard crust
Italian or French. This is how it is with me - I can't speak for
everyone.
The other thing with bread, IMHO, is that it is too high carb and not
enough nutrients.

life changing decision in your life. Yes, post op is not a cake

decision and are committed to a life long change, you will find Joy

Re: Not sure what to expect...

2008-04-18 08:04:53

I've been heavy my whole life, don't remember a time when I wasn't and
with every diet came additional weight and additional heartache. I
dated a lot, exercised a lot, dieted a lot and generally didn't let my
weight get me down. I met my husband May 5, 2001 and about a year ago
I decided I had to do something to get this weight off once and for
all. After reading Carnie Wilson's first book I started researching
the surgery hardcore, found a great doctor and staff and April 9, 2004
had Lap RNY surgery and have never been happier. I'll be 1 month out
Friday and am down 30-35lbs. from a high of 348 prior to surgery
(don't show on my scale yet so all I can do is guesstimate, but was
down 22 lbs. at 2 week check in). I'm back to exercising, so happy
that I was released to have salads and light meats (tuna, chicken
salad, shrimp) yesterday and looking forward to the kind of weightloss
the other members of this and other groups show. We are all such
inspiration and so strong to go through this. I wish you all the best

powdered milk to everything so have to go to the store today and get
some. i bought the natural figuring it would go in anything but just
cant get past it! grrr spent a bunch on it too oh well will still try
and get in in someplace maybe just need a break from it. so far
according to my scale i have lost 21 pounds. dont know it this is
normal or what just so happy to see the scale move! last night i was
able to sleep in my bed for the first time since i been home and what
a big difference it made in sleeping, i used to love my recliner but
i am sad to say it hurts my butt lol!!! i am walking some each day
and plan to start back the YMCA tomorrow and use the treadmill and
work back up to the other stuff, in a couple of weeks i should be
able to go back to water arobics i have an infection in one of my
holes that hasnt cleared up yet. i am using peroxide and trip
antibiotic med on it 3 times a day. i go to see my family dr on
friday for a check up and will have her check it then and i have 3
stitches to be taken out. all in all so far has been a great road
with few bumps along the way!!!

RE: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] Looking for encouragement

2008-04-16 10:45:07

RaeShel,
I have not been where you are, but I know how I feel now. I too am concerned
that when I get the weight off it will be hard. I think that we get in our
minds that the heavy person is who we are. We feel comfortable in our fat
exterior because we don't get the attention that we might when we are thin. You
mind is a powerful thing and can be overwhelming in your best efforts to get the
weight off. Even though I have not been there I can see that in my future, have
you thought about seeing a therapist. Or asking your surgeon or the
psychiatrist that you saw before you had the surgery to ask advice. I think you
are probably suffering from fear of what your life will hold once you get the
weight off. As much as we hate the weight many of us use it as a shield from
society. That is a hard cycle to break. Good luck and let me know what you
finally find out to help you, because I fear I will react the same way as well.

2008-04-15 06:59:51

Well, my last day to "eat" anything and my stomach is already saying
no. I can't stay out of the bathroom. LOL
I start on liquids tomorrow to be "clean" and ready for surgery.
I still feel like I have a million things to do. Sitting here at
moment getting a few pictures and cards ready to send to my Mom and
In Law for Mother's Day. Kept saying how I might still be in Hospital
for MD but forgot about my Moms.
I am either going a mile a minute or lost/dazed that this is really
about to happen. I have gone through so much to get to this point.
The reality of truly losing weight is exciting even knowing all
the "fun" of learning how to eat again. And like someone else said, I
really cannot imagine or see myself thin. Yes, I know I'll be losing
weight but just have no concept of being a smaller person. Shopping
anywhere else but plus size.
I do have fun talking with my kids about how we can go to the
amusement parks next year and I will be able to get on ALL the rides.
Well, having one of those daydream moments better get back to my to
do list.
Blessings to all, Dana

Looking for encouragement

2008-04-15 02:27:01

Hey guys,
I don't post that often, but today I just need some encouraging
words from those who've BEEN through what I have. My family is
completely supportive but unless you've been through it, it's just
not the same.
I have done awesome with this surgery up until about 3 months or
so ago. I will be one year out on June 6th and I have lost 190lbs. so
far. The last 50lbs has been a bloody battle to drop. I would LOVE to
hit the 200lbs. mark by my anniversary. I have 10 more pounds to lose
and 33 days in which to do it in.
But here is my problem. Sometimes I think I psychologically freak
myself out! I can do great with eating, avoiding bad carbs and sugars
for days on end....but as soon as I step on the scale and see a
significant weight loss...the following 3 or 4 days are just HELL!!!!
I crave carbs, and I eat until I hurt! And it takes days to get
myself back on the stright and narrow. I know the solution would be
easy to just say..."well, stay off the scale dummy!" and I know you
would be right, but I need to get to the bottom of my fears if I am
going to get over them. The last thing I want is for this yo yo thing
to become a habit years out and eventually gain the weight back.
I've worked to hard and to long to let that happen, but I am
terrified that despite my pure intentions...it will inevitably
happen.
Has anyone else experienced this? What did you do about it? Know any
tricks I can use to fool myself? I'm desperate.
Thanks for listening to me rant.

weighing/hunting scales

Hunting scales that will weigh us,,When I weighed 644, I used to go
to a recycler/scrapyard, their scales are within 2 lbs, legal for
trade(buying and selling) they should weigh you and not charge
anything most will print you a ticket,,I know this sounds bad but
you can take that ticket to the dr and have it entered into your
chart,,I used to nave to do this,,,
I hope this will help someone,,

I was 18, 16 yrs i've been 380lbs. My doctor's office didn't have
scales to weigh me, but my insurance company denied me because my
weight was not documented. What kind of crap is that. I've had
diabetes for 14 yrs, i'm insulin dependant. I've had high blood
pressure for at least that long. My eyes have diabetic changes that
can't be corrected. And i've just been diagnosed with sleep apnea
that requires bipap to treat. Has anybody else had problems with the
insurance company and what did you do? Damn i'm frustrated.

Is there anyone in this group...a smoker??? Any information on
smoking and this surgery? My surgeon...like all docs wants me to
quit. This probably wouldnt be as difficult as it seems to me except
that I also have to lose 10% of my overweightedness as well. I am
less than a month pre-op and would like some feedback from any
smokers and how you dealt with it.
My surgery is June 1st.

Leah,
I also have acrylic nails and for this surgery (and an unrelated surgery the
year before) I showed up w/new manicure, pedicure, red polish and all. They say
no... but it was no problem and my nails were left untouched.
You will get as many answers on driving as there are surgeons out there (and
some of us with the same surgeon get different answers). My surgeon publishes
in one of their booklets that you can drive after 5 days with Lap, after 2 weeks
with open. As mentioned before, be careful driving with pain meds. I did it
for years before my 4th back surgery took care of my back pain. Otherwise, I
wouldnt have been behind the wheel of a car for the 17 years it took to get my
back fixed.
As for the 'intimate' question.... LOL milk being on the receiving end as long
as you can.

Subject: Surgery coming soon!
Hi all! I haven't posted much and thought I would since my surgery
is coming up very soon. I am having mine May 12th. I am really
looking forward to feeling the way I used to when I was thin. I
want to be able to keep up with my kids. I just have a few
questions. First off...I have artificial tips on my nails and my
toes are painted. Does anyone know if I have to have those removed
before my surgery? I just don't want to go in and have them do it.
I would rather do it myself if it isn't allowed. Secondly, does
anyone know how long after surgery you can begin to drive? I have
two young kids and a husband that works. I am a stay at home mom
and drive the kids to doc appointments and to the grocery store.
And this next question comes from my hubby...He wants to know how
long after surgery can he and I be intimate again? *LOL* I am not
sure I am going to be feeling up to that but he wants to know. I am
getting excited and I will be putting up a BLOG on my web page. I
hope that some of you will come and follow me through my journey. I
have had trouble with depression after my second child was born and
it seemed the more people I had emailing and chatting with me, the
better I seemed to get, so I hope you will all help me get through
the rough stuff.

Looking for Anna Marie Papadakis......An old friend

Hi
I am looking for Anna Marie Papadakis, she use to live in Dundalk,
Maryland a few years ago and I believe she had the same surgery I
(all others here) had. I was friends with her and I saw her in
Walmart one day (just before my wedding in 2001) and she had told me
she had this surgery, I just wanted to get in touch with her again, I
had lost her address and was wanting to reunite and hope we could be
close friends again.
Please reply to the above email for information, my name was Tammy
Woolford before I got married so maybe she will see this message and
remember me.
Thanks,

Not sure what to expect...

2008-04-12 06:38:23

I have a probably silly question for you guys. I have been heavy my entire
life. I am waiting on my approval to move forward with my RNY. My question is
how many of you have been heavy your whole life? I have never since I was a
young child have I been in anything smaller than a 24W. How many of you have
lost your weight and are now in a 12,14 or 16 or any small size for that matter?
I sit and try to visualize what I will look like and I can't do it. I wonder if
it will be like that new show the Swan and I won't recognize myself. Really
looking for some input on this. Thanks guys. It is just a funny feeling to
know that for the first time in my life I might be able to wear regular size
clothes one day.

Re: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] Introductions

2008-04-11 22:53:43

Hello everyone-- glad to finally find a group!
I had RNY June 23, 2003 at 343 lbs. To date I have lost 135 lbs. to 208. I
no longer take blood pressure meds, anti-inflamatories for my back, and of
most allergy medication. The surgery was the best thing I have ever done for
myself, short of having my daughter. I have had no major side effects, but I
did lose quite a bit of hair from about the fourth month to the ninth. My
Dr. prescribed 220 mg of zinc sulfonate 3x a day at about the seventh month.
I have no idea whether it was the zinc of the time factor that helped, but
the shedding has stopped. I also lost hair after I was pregnant, and when I
lost 100 lbs the first time low carbing, and it grew back both times, so I
was not too concerned.
I lost 28 lbs the first ten days, 60 lbs the first two months, 110 lbs by
six months. I am very happy with my progress, but is seems that this month I
have lost nothing. I guess I have reached the dreaded "plateau". I have
noticed that it is getting increasingly easier to eat "around " the
surgery-- I can still only eat very small amounts at any given time, but I
want to do it all day long now, instead of just three or four times a day.
I am not sure what to attribute this increase in hunger , or eating, to, but
it is distressing.
Does anyone have any insight or suggestions?
I suppose my biggest life change since the surgery would have to be getting
used to not drinking during and after meals. I struggle with this problem
every day. I just can' t get used to it. Otherwise, I feel great, am
seriously overspending on a new wardrobe, and am enjoying playing with my
family and friends again.
Best moments--
Passing out in the Dr's office from too much blood pressure medication.
Perverse, yes, but very nice to have my GP finally become a "believer" in

Re: I AM SCARED

Believe me, you are not alone on this one. I took me 18 months to
commit to the surgery.
One of the mental strains on me was the 1 in 200 deaths. As I spoke
to my surgeon, who I have absolute trust in, he wanted me to
understand the risks and possible dangers. But one underlying factor
generally appeared in each of the death cases we discussed, there
were usually other complicating factors. Anytime we are under
anthesia, we are at the mercy of the anethesiologist(sp?) and the
surgeon, whether it is for WLS, Cardiac, or hip replacement. As has
been said in the prior replies, its a choice we all have had to face
and one not to be taken lightly. Have your affairs in order, then
relax, your life is about to be changed forever and you will begin to
live life as it was intended for you, with Joy.
May peace be with you in your decision and happiness reign in your
heart.

Surgery coming soon!

2008-04-10 16:35:26

Thanks,
Leah

Hi.
Can I make another suggestion? As well as seeing the doctor (very
important :) also check your area for a support group. I am pre op
myself, but between the doctor's session and going to the group
meetings, I have learned alot and am able to hear from people who
have gone thru this before me (both the + and - of it). Good luck to
him and his wls journey.

Depending on where you are from, I would go see a specialist in this area of
surgery.. For me, I am having the surgery in Burlington, VT, and the
surgeon is Dr. Laurie Spaulding.
Your son will not only have the surgeon, but also a dietician and a
psychiatrist. If the doctor hasn't mentioned it already, your son may have
to go for a sleep study for sleep apnea (one of the clues is if your son
snores alot when he sleeps, and if he sleeps alot during the day, and
doesn't have any energy). Each member of the "team" will explain things
very thoroughly.

son's wls

2008-04-09 15:58:11

hi everyone, my son and i are new to this whole thing and have a few
questions for anyone who has already done it. My son is 18 and has
been heavy {but gorgeous} most of his young life. He has juvenile
degeneratve disc disease, arthritis in his back and a possible
ruptured disc {he's having a myelogram in a few days to find out for
sure because he won't fit in the mri tube}. He weighs over 350 we
don't know how much over cause that's as high as the drs scale
goes. His back surgeon is making him do the wls because he says he
can't fix his back until he fixes his weight. he wants to know if u
can feel the staples in your stomach, if you dont eat when u get
hungry do u get sick, if u have to eat every 15 minutes, and
generally anything u can tell him to ease his fears. He has a lot to
worry about with his pain and back stuff and i don't want him to have
to wait for his class on wls to find out the things he is most
worried about. Thanks, Boo's mom

Re: [Gastric_Bypass_Family] I AM SCARED

2008-04-09 09:20:02

Hun,
When I thought of the statistics, I thought to myself.... how many in 200
dies from complications due to obesity? And I came to the conclusion that a
great deal more than
1 in 200 die from heart failure, high blood pressure and the sort.... I
would suspect that
there would even be a high rate of suicide or attempts due to depression
from being morbidly obese. (I know that I, for one, would be in those stats)
From that, I decided that it was a small risk to what I would be gaining....
MY LIFE!
I am like walking dead now and I am so anxious to get the life I was born to
have.
I am fully aware that any surgery holds risks but thousands of people go
under the knife every day........ how many of those could be avoided if the
people were thinner and healthy?
Read the posts on the list, even those who have had rough spots in the
journey say that it is all worth it and that they would do it again!
The success stories are so moving, they, (plus knowledge) removed my fear of
this surgery. I am so anxious to be approved, I am about to crawl out of my
skin.
I hope you find peace in your research and that you will consider this for
you and for your family. To have a full and rich life with more energy and
health....
is it worth the risks? Only you can answer that for yourself.

HI Julie, my name is Stacy. Three years ago I had a Nissan fundoplication and
then in 2003 had the open RYN wls the only thing my surgeon suggested before the
Nissan was that if I was going to have the wls that I should just do that and It
would take care of the acid reflux but I chickened out and had the Nissan F,
then decided to have RYN later after extensive research, The Dr. that did the
open ryn said that he would need an extra hour for surgery then after it was
done he mentioned he had to go through a ton of "scar tissue" and he said he
cussed a few times lol, but Im doing great its been 6 months ive lost 80 lbs
and losing slowly now just DONT EAT FAST EAT VERY SLOW AND CHEW WELL and you
should be fine if you have any more ?,s let me know God Bless you

Man, you must have typed for an hour on this. I got so lost in the
rambling that I'm not quite sure exacty which misconception you were
focusing on...
I constantly hear that Islam is a peace loving religon. If I may,
then where are your leaders in your religon. Why don't your leaders
stand up in unity and not only denounce what is going on in the name
of Allah, but unite those of Islam that are peace loving against
those that are creating this world wide ill feeling towards your
religon. If it is Islam's desire to become "the" religon of the
world, weak leadership will doom any religon. No God, Allah
included, would allow weak men to guide "his" people.
My two cents.
Peace to you and your family

Lenora I am 5 months out and only lost 55 pounds. I dont have the hangins
stomach yet but I do have the same problems with my hari falling out. I just
went to a support group where I was told by many to take Zinc so I take a
regular vitamin (Centrum) which has Biotin in it and I supplement with 60mg
Zinc. I just started so I dont see much difference yet but am confident this
will help. Also up your protein. this is very very important. There is a
multi vitamin at the store that is for Hair which has 100mg protein in it. Or
go to vitalady.com and order a protein shake. I hear the chocolate and the
cherry are good. Esp if you heat up the choc like hot choc. Well I hope this
helps and your doing great.

Re: conscious

2008-04-06 17:47:21

Here goes my 2 cents worth...I guess it also depends on the relationship you and
your spouse has established...I got the whistles a mighty long time ago and i
still feel beautiful, but i feel beautiful because of my self esteem and because
i have darling wonderful husband who reminds me every single day. god bless him,
he's not perfect nor am i..but i love him just the way he is. I told him when i
am thinner i am going to do lap dances for him,..lol..got to have a sense of
humor as well....anyway the point is that i know..why i am doing this, and it is
not a vanity issue,..maybe along the way track of mind gets too consumed in
yourself that you get into selfish habits..lord i pray that i don't fall into
those shoes, because my family is primary and i know my place as a christian
wife...i am a God fearing woman..big or not temptation has always been
there..it's up to this person if they're going to give in to pleasures of the
flesh and if the family is worth the sacrifice of a serious
heartache that will follow--or even if this person gets away w/ it and keeps it
a secret i don't know how anyone can live or sleep w/ a dirty conscious..seek
help please..---my Dr. did mention to my group that this happens often--NO ONE
IS PERFECT--anyone can fall and make a mistake, just correct before it gets out
of hand..MIMI
Michele <boogiemomm@...
don't warn you about, and I
can see how it is all too common. Like the proverbial kid in a candy
store, positive attention is a first to some, and can be just as
addicting as any candy or drug. A lot of us have never had the wolf
whistles from cars or the bad pick up lines when we were younger, and
don't quite know what to do with them now. It is thrilling to have
someone acknowledge us. Even now, after only 4 months, I get treated
differently, but only by people who weren't interested in me as a
person a hundred pounds ago.
To get by in the world when we were bigger, a question we had to ask
ourselves was what is more important, WHO we are, or HOW we appear to
others. The question is no different now than it was a hundred
pounds ago. A better question might be how good is your self
esteem? The lower the self esteem, the more easily swayed by the
thoughts and attitudes of others.
You realize now what is happening, and it is up to you to do
something about it. If you need to revamp your marriage, there are
many ways. It can become almost, if not more, exciting as any
affair. Plus added the benefits of strengthing your marriage and the
lack of guilt that affairs can bring. It is all up to you.
Good luck.

TOP TEN MISCONCEPTIONS

2008-04-06 01:07:00

TOP TEN MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT ISLAM
by : Huma Ahmad
MISCONCEPTION #1: Muslims are violent, terrorists and/or extremists. This is
the biggest misconception in Islam, no doubt resulting from the constant
stereotyping and bashing the media gives Islam. When a gunman attacks a mosque
in the name of Judaism, a Catholic IRA guerrilla sets off a bomb in an urban
area, or Serbian Orthodox militiamen rape and kill innocent Muslim civilians,
these acts are not used to stereotype an entire faith. Never are these acts
attributed to the religion of the perpetrators. Yet how many times have we heard
the words 'Islamic, Muslim fundamentalist, etc.' linked with violence. Politics
in so called "Muslim countries" may or may not have any Islamic basis. Often
dictators and politicians will use the name of Islam for their own purposes. One
should remember to go to the source of Islam and separate what the true religion
of Islam says from what is portrayed in the media. Islam literally means
'submission to God' and is derived from a root word meaning 'peace'. Islam may
seem exotic or even extreme in the modern world. Perhaps this is because
religion doesn't dominate everyday life in the West, whereas Islam is considered
a 'way of life' for Muslims and they make no division between secular and sacred
in their lives. Like Christianity, Islam permits fighting in self-defense, in
defense of religion, or on the part of those who have been expelled forcibly
from their homes. It lays down strict rules of combat which include prohibitions
against harming civilians and against destroying crops, trees and livestock.
NOWHERE DOES ISLAM ENJOIN THE KILLING OF INNOCENTS....The Quran says: "Fight in
the cause of God against those who fight you, but do not transgress limits. God
does not love transgressors." (Quran 2:190) "If they seek peace, then seek you
peace. And trust in God for He is the One that heareth and knoweth all things."
(Quran 8:61) War, therefore, is the last resort, and is subject to the rigorous
conditions laid down by the sacred law. The term 'jihad' literally means
'struggle'. Muslims believe that there are two kinds of jihad. The other 'jihad'
is the inner struggle of the soul which everyone wages against egotistic desires
for the sake of attaining inner peace. MISCONCEPTION #2: Islam oppresses
women. The image of the typical Muslim woman wearing the veil and forced to
stay home and forbidden to drive is all too common in most peoples thoughts.
Although some Muslim countries may have laws that oppress women, this should not
be seen as coming from Islam. Many of these countries do not rule by any kind of
Shari'ah (Islamic law) and introduce their own cultural standpoints on the issue
of gender equity. Islam on the other hand gives men and women different roles
and equity between the two is laid down in the Quran and the example of the
Prophet (peace be upon him). Islam sees a woman, whether single or married, as
an individual in her own right, with the right to own and dispose of her
property and earnings. A marriage gift is given by the groom to the bride for
her own personal use, and she keeps her own family name rather than taking her
husband's. Both men and women are expected to dress in a way that is modest and
dignified. The Messenger of God (peace be upon him) said: "The most perfect in
faith amongst believers is he who is best in manner and kindest to his wife."
Violence of any kind towards women and forcing them against their will for
anything is not allowed. A Muslim marriage is a simple, legal agreement in which
either partner is free to include conditions. Marriage customs thus vary widely
from country to country. Divorce is not common, although it is acceptable as a
last resort. According to Islam, a Muslim girl cannot be forced to marry against
her will: her parents simply suggest young men they think may be suitable.
MISCONCEPTION #3: Muslims worship a different God. Allah is simply the Arabic
word for God. Allah for Muslims is the greatest and most inclusive of the Names
of God, it is an Arabic word of rich meaning, denoting the one and only God and
ascribing no partners to Him. It is exactly the same word which the Jews, in
Hebrew, use for God (eloh), the word which Jesus Christ used in Aramaic when he
prayed to God. God has an identical name in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam;
Allah is the same God worshiped by Muslims, Christians and Jews. Muslims believe
that Allah's sovereignty is to be acknowledged in worship and in the pledge to
obey His teaching and commandments, conveyed through His messengers and prophets
who were sent at various times and in many places throughout history. However,
it should be noted that God in Islam is One and Only. He, the Exalted, does not
get tired, does not have a son (i.e. Jesus) or have associates, nor does He have
human-like attributions as found in other faiths. MISCONCEPTION #4: Islam was
spread by the sword and intolerant of other faiths. Many social studies
textbooks for students show the image of an Arab horseman carrying a sword in
one hand and the Quran in the other conquering and forcibly converting. This,
though, is not a correct portrayal of history. Islam has always given respect
and freedom of religion to all faiths. The Quran says: "God forbids you not,
with regards to those who fight you not for [your] faith nor drive you out of
your homes, from dealing kindly and justly with them; for God loveth those who
are just." (Qur'an 60:8) Freedom of religion is laid down in the Quran itself:
"There is no compulsion (or coercion) in the religion (Islam). The right
direction is distinctly clear from error." (Qur'an 2:256) Christian missionary,
T.W. Arnold had this opinion on his study of the question of the spread of
Islam: "...of any organized attempt to force the acceptance of Islam on the
non-Muslim population, or of any systematic persecution intended to stamp out
the Christian religion, we hear nothing. Had the caliphs chosen to adopt either
course of action, they might have swept away Christianity as easily as Ferdinand
and Isabella drove Islam out of Spain, or Louis XIV made Protestanism..." It
is a function of Islamic law to protect the privileged status of minorities, and
this is why non-Muslim places of worship have flourished all over the Islamic
world. History provides many examples of Muslim tolerance towards other faiths:
when the caliph Omar entered Jerusalem in the year 634, Islam granted freedom of
worship to all religious communities in the city. Proclaiming to the inhabitants
that their lives, and property were safe, and that their places of worship would
never be taken from them, he asked the Christian patriarch Sophronius to
accompany him on a visit to all the holy places. Islamic law also permits
non-Muslim minorities to set up their own courts, which implement family laws
drawn up by the minorities themselves. The life and property of all citizens in
an Islamic state are considered sacred whether the person is Muslim or not.
Racism is not a part of Islam, the Quran speaks only of human equality and how
all peoples are equal in the sight of God. "O mankind! We created you from a
single soul, male and female, and made you into nations and tribes, so that you
may come to know one another. Truly, the most honored of you in God's sight is
the greatest of you in piety. God is All-Knowing, All- Aware." (Qur'an 49:13
<http://members.tripod.com/~bimcrot/images/sura49.jpg
Muslims are Arabs The Muslim population of the world is around 1,2 billion. One
out of five people in the world is a Muslim. They are a vast range of races,
nationalities, and cultures from around the globe--from the Phillipines to
Nigeria--they are united by their common Islamic faith. Only about 18% live in
the Arab world and the largest Muslim community is in Indonesia. Most Muslims
live east of Pakistan. Thirty percent of Muslims live in the Indian
subcontinent, 20% in Sub-Saharan Africa, 17% in Southeast Asia, 18% in the Arab
world, and 10% in the Soviet Union and China. Turkey, Iran, and Afghanistan make
up 10% of the non-Arab Middle East. Although there are Muslim minorities in
almost every area, including Latin America and Australia, they are most numerous
in Russia and its newly independent states, India and central Africa. There are
about 6 million Muslims in the United States. MISCONCEPTION #6: The Nation of
Islam is a Muslim group. Islam and the so called "Nation of Islam (NOI)" are
two different religions. NOI is more of a political organization since its
