I was so stressed about going to that amusement park.. especially with a
strange man. Even before we got there.. I found myself thinking up excuses
for various rides so he wouldnt' see me not able to fit in the seats... and
didn't even need them! I forgot to add that when I got home, I discovered
that I'd finally broken my plateau and dropped below 220! Only by about a
pound.. but darn it..it's still below!! That was a goal for me.
Laurette, good luck with your trainer. Good for you for taking that
initiative and thank you for the note.. that made me feel good. So many
times I read things in there and think.. I wish I were there.. Someday.....
To be able to put up one of my own... it's a nice feeling.
You Go Nora!!! 200 is a major goal for me and the day I break it.... You All
will hear me shriek! lol
Mimi.. You hang in there. You are doing a Terrific job!!

WOW!!!!!!!!!!! congratulations on your new milestones. your inspiration to
me and to others too. just what i needed to hear as i'm going through those
discouraging times too. thank you!!
i just got home from meeting my personal trainer today and things look
promising. i go through my fitness assessment on tuesday, see how much i can
and
can't do and to give us a starting point. i've been at a plateau seems like for
weeks now, well as i think about it it has been about 4 weeks. haven't lost
any weight but have lost inches. they all tell me thats a good thing and not
to worry about the pounds. my body is still adjusting. okay i'll try and
remember that.
i'm looking forward to experience those same things you have beach (sorry
don't know your first name). looking forward to those amusement rides that i
haven't been able to do for i can't remember how many years. to shop in the
ladies section, wow that would be great too.
well thanks again for being my inspiration today. you take care, keep up the
good work and have a wonderful day and when's your next trip to GA...lol.

I am on top of the world and wanted to share it with the folks I knew would
understand!
I had my surgery on New Years Eve, and lately have been a bit discouraged
because I've been stuck at a plateau for AGES!..ok.. a couple weeks.. it
just felt like years. But suddenly I'm a happy camper again!
On Wednesday, I went to buy a bathing suit, something that has Never been a
pleasant thing! I wasnt' sure what size to get. In the 'before' time, I wore
2X or something like a 22/24. I'd even broken down and bought one with a
skirt. So this time.. I had no clue what size to get. I scooped up several
sizes off the rack and tried them on. There was one that fit that I loved,
so I looked at the tag. A Large had snuck into my stack and THAT was the one
that looked best!! OMG!! I was so excited that I did a little shopping.. in
the Ladie's section...not the Women's section! I found some cute tops in L
& XL (Depending on the cute).. not XL/XXL. I even found a pair of leggings
in the ladies section that fit nicely! Color me shocked!!
Really early Friday morning, I took off to drive to my folks house in NC,
but in GA I had some car trouble. Just a small thing that led to the rest of
my great weekend. I called a friend, but he was busy, so he send his friend
and suddenly I found myself on a blind date! lol He helped me find a place
to stay while my car was taken care of, then decided to take me to an
amusement part. Ok.. Anxiety time!! All I could think of were turnstyle
gates and rides with small seats... and as we approached the gate.. that was
all I could see. Would I be able to get through it?
I not only made it through. I made it through facing forward normally! I
didn't have to turn sideways and squeeze! The day was made for me right
there.. we rode rides and ate lunch...I even had a snow cone! Ye Gods that
was yummy!! lol I passed on his cotten candy and candied apple though lol.
To top off the day.. he made a pass at me! lol Always very good for a girl's
ego!
I know this is long, but I just got home and I'm sitting here sunburned and
grinning and wanted to share it with you guys. You are always there when
I've had a problem.. I wanted to share the high to.
Mine took 2 hours, My surgeon said 2-3 hours ...

The other night I'm thinking now I really need to get exercising.
I decided I would start walking in my neighorhood.
I call out to my kids (8&9), yes they want to go too.
So I tell my son to dig my sneakers out from the bottom of my closet.
He looks at me plain as day and says

Well it was a nice walk, I made it around our big block twice.

the best thing you have going for you is that you're only 30yrs old!
You still HAVE elasticity in your skin.
Unfortunately, exercise will not tighten skin. The best benefit of
exercising on your skin is that it fills you out more with shapely
muscles. It is a wonderful, healthy look.
Look at Oprah..she's over 50 and she looks darn nice now because of
how physically fit she is.
I'm only a couple of weeks ahead of you and only weighed a little less
than you did pre-op. I had the exact same problem. It was compounded
by having a friend who had the surgery a year earlier tell me I would
automatically lose 30 lbs in 30 days. Boy did that not happen for
me!!I was feeling like a failure. And I knew I was hardly taking in
any calories at all.
My doctor told me even though my start was slow, I was still "on the
curve" and was doing fine.
The other point is that a lot of people start out with much more
weight to lose, therefore their loss is greater.
The good news is the weight loss kicked back in again and as of
Wednesday I'd lost 35 lbs.
Bethany, I had written a long note to you and as I was about to
finish correcting my typographical errors, the entire message
disappeared into cyber never-never land. I waited a while to see if
by chance it was posted, but it was not. So as my train of thought
has been broken, I cannot exactly reconstruct what I was saying, but
I'll try to give you the gist of my thoughts.
When you wrote of your incredible weight loss in two weeks, know
that I read it with great joy for you. That I feel this way about
your weight loss success may not in any way comfort you, or provide
the actual support you need to feel emotional encouragement; as I
heard you say, you would have liked to see personal congratulations
from the group.
If you could stop a while and think about how you feel when you read
of other's good news or success... and hold onto that thought and
feeling for a few minutes, then you'd begin to know how we feel
about you when you write to us about your success. To know and
realize there are literally hundreds of people in cyber-space that
do read your post and feel joy for you is hard to fathom.
It is unfortunate that people do not have the time to write to each
other because of our busy lives [for whatever reason], but we do
feel joy for you in your accomplishment when we read your news. Now,
if we could find a way to send these good vibes that we are feeling
for you, to you, I'm sure you would feel the support you need
immediately after your message is posted. In reality, this is
probably never going to be the case, so please remember, although
you may never see anything in writing, everyone matters to each
other [that is obvious]...otherwise we would not take the time to
read what others write.
I know time is at a premium for most of us, so as someone else
suggested, there are numberous support groups you could become
involved in. Please don't feel like you are ignored when you don't
hear back from people. I know a lot of people read the posts at
work, and remember, an employer [more than likely] would frown on
the employees communicating with friends during the time the
employees are being paid to work at their job. I realize knowing
these facts do not in any way help you to feel better about not
hearing from us, but as you begin to see the reasons, perhaps you
will feel less slighted, and more love which you deserve.
Best wishes for additional weight loss,

Lynda,
As an older woman who is thinking of one day having children, thank you for
that. You said that eloquently and makes a ton of sense!! Thanks.
I'm so happy for you about your pregnancy, congratulations!
Yes, you are right about heavy women being generally less fertile as
a population than women who are of a more normal weight. It is a
delicate subject, and I wish the fertility specialists would come
out and actually discuss this fact with women of substance. This
would save them much mental anguish trying to get pregnant and money
in fertility treatments that may never work until they loose a
substancial amount of weight and their hormone levels drop to normal.
Don't worry about your age. I had an older mother and never even
noticed she was so much older than my friend's mothers; this just
never occurs to a child, as a parent's age is irrelevant to
them...love, security, nurturing and nutrition are what a child
requires, and this can be given by the mother no matter what her age
[or even inabilities due to physical limitations of their body...my
mother was not only older but she was crippled, and it never
bothered me that she couldn't do the play stuff other mothers could
do...in fact, later on when I was 7 years old, I was proud of myself
when I could support and help her when she had my brother when she
was far into her 40's.]Just another thought for the day, Lynda
Thanks Shannon and everybody. It's been almost 5 months since my
surgery and I have been trying hard to do everything my dr said.
Eating right, exercising (which is new to me!!!) and stuff like
that. It really hurts that my husband still thinks I don't look
good enough. I mean he's right that I"ve got a long ways to go yet
but it doesn't help when he looks at every skinny woman on tv and
makes comments or even if we are at the mall, its embarrasing how he
stares at them. Then if he acts like its my fault that we don't
have a 'normal relationship' and of course he means sex. I know I
need to focus on me and getting healthy and ignore him. Its hard
sometimes though. I am so happy about the surgery and the good
friends I have.
Thanks!

Hey Monkey gal.....you asked about drinking diet soda....you will find out that
everybody handles that topic VERY DIFFERENTLY !!! It's just that again,
everybody is different in what the can and can;t tolerate. Now, as for myself I
had my Lap RNY back in December of 2001....I never stoped enjoying diet soda. In
fact I found one day through this site that there were a few people who said
they have to sip on diet soda while they eat...the soda helps the food go down
and for some reason aids in the digestion of the food....that is exactly what I
have been doing. I always sip on a nice cold diet soda while I eat...Your just
going to hear from people that soda is bad and then your going ti hear that
drinking soda is no big deal. My surgeon didn't have a problem with it, however
my water in take is not where it should be....I need to start drinking more
water !

70 lbs is awesome! How long has it been since your
surgery? I would ignore him. Do this for yourself!
You wouldn't have been able to lose the weight without
the surgery and given time, you will look and feel
more wonderful than you can imagine. Good luck,
Shannon
Today is such a depressing day for me too. I have lost over 70
pounds now but this morning my dear old hubby looked at me and said
he thought I'd look different by now. He asked when I will look
normal? I was so hurt after how careful I've been with my eating.
I guess he wants a wife that looks like a model or something and I
know I'll never look like that. I think his griping about my weight
over the years just made me eat more. I know its been my fault
but . . . I don't know what to say. He's always been able to eat
anything he wants and he's one of those guys that 'appreciates' good
looking women. Somehow I don't think I'll ever look good enough for
him. Sorry I just had to vent. I guess I'll go for a walk to work
off some of this anger.
Thanks,
Anna

Congratulations on 28lbs gone!!! I hit a plateau at 6 weeks out. Your body
is just trying to catch up with all the major changes. As for gaining and
losing the same 2 or 3 lbs....don't weigh yourself every day. Once a week at
most, and make sure you weigh at the same time every day. I can weigh myself
5 times a day and get 5 different weights. Keep walking, try to drink a
little bit more water....I would try to eat a little more in the way of
calories as well. My surgeon has me eating 6 times a day. Small meals...a
protein drink or glass of milk can count as a meal. I've lost 60lbs in the
first 3 months and am at another plateau. They suck, but they go away. Good
luck :o)

Hi Cindy
My UTI winded up being that I am pregnant. I know my doctor will be
pissed at me but, you know, I am going to be 40 next week and I am
doing great with the post op thing and I really have not had any
problems at all. So, I think I will be alright (I am just praying)
But God is in control of everything so if it is in His will, I will
have a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby.
Me and my husband were trying for a long time and I even went (before
the surgery) to a Fertility Clinic and I was so disapointed when it
did not work and they (at the clinic) told me it was because I was so
overweight that I couldn't get pregnant (they didn't say that flat
out like that) but I could read inbetween the lines and comments they
were making. I cried all the time because I wanted to have a baby
before I was too old to have one. But now, I hope everything will be
ok.
So, I am not sure about your UTI but I know what mine is. You are
not pregnant by chance are you? I hope it all works out for you and
thank you for your kind words.

This morning I posted my two week update. The only responses I
received were about me getting sick. I know that we are supposed to
keep a positive attitude but that is kind of why I joined the group.
I don't expect someone to hold my hand the whole time, but I was
wanting some support. The fact that I lost 19 lbs in 13 days made me
happy. Am I not doing as well as all of you? I guess that I thought
when I checked the board that I would have had words of
encouragement or congrats. I am not meaning to sound self-centered,
in fact I have tried to help others on this website while trying to
receive support at the same time. Today has been a little depressing
and I guess that I look forward to checking the board everynight.
Well I am sorry for this message because I am trying to remain
positive. Hope that all of you are still doing great. We should all
keep up the good work and try to help one another.
Bethany
Hi Bethany,
I wouldn't count on just one support group to fit all your needs. I
recommend joining several. I think you'll find that most people post
privately when it's just to say "at a boy...good going...congrats,
etc." and that is the way it is supposed to work. Now another thing
is that people on most lists will respond very quickly and in great
volume when anyone posts needing immediate help. Spread yourself out
and get involved in other people's problems and take your mind off
your own.
Another thing you might consider is this. After your name put your
city and your surgeon and your type of surgery as well as your Pre-Op
weight, current weight, and goal weight. These things will enable
other list members to find out things about you to identify with.
Don't get discouraged and congrats on your weight loss, it's great!

Hi all!
Just got home from my one year check-up and I lost 102# so far: from
326 to 224 pounds. The first 6 months I had gone from 326 to 239;
the second six months from 239 to 224 which is only 15# loss. I've
actually been on a plateau the past three months.
I just graduated from my Business Coaching Program and am now in the
Masters Level Class. As I start my coaching practice, I have picked
a niche market! I'd like to work with obese or formerly obese women
who want to go to the next level in their professional careers. This
should be a fun group to work with, as I can understand where they
are or are about to go. It is great to be a coach and watch women
develop knowledge, skills & abilities they never knew they had. It
is all about defining your purpose and going for the best you can
be, utilizing right action as one of your guiding principals.
That's it. I know I don't usually say very much because others are
so knowledgable and give such speedy replies, but one stood out
today that I need to respond to; so I'll put it here:
When I had my surgery, my doctor was very concerned that I lived 35
miles from the hospital. He felt if there were an emergency, I'd be
too far away from the University Hospital; especially if this
happened in rush hour traffic...which may delay a run to town of
over an hour or two.
In light of distance versus time in traffic, you may wish to discuss
this with your surgeon. As was stated previously, every one is
different.
What I do know is that my small community hospital 15 miles away,
which is the closest for me, and the one which an ambulance would
take me to first, is not equipt to handle my gastric bypass
case...which would mean a delay in treatment as I'd probably have
had to be airlifted to the medical center...this could have been
financially expensive... and physically dangerous considering the
time element delay in immediate surgical care if it were necessary.
Something to think about. Sincere regards,
Lynda Nurenberg
be sure to take a bed pillow along to put on your belly for the ride home.

It may be true about the MSG in these foods, but as
far as I can see, the foods that are listed are very
fattening foods to begin with. Anybody eating these
whether it has MSG or not, is bound to put on weight.
The real major thing that has been diagnosed to cause
problems from ADD, to weight gain, to many other
problems is from Aspartame. I've just recently read
up on this and it is a scary thing. I will certainly
try to pick things with Splenda in it.

be uncomfortable, but other than that, no problems.

It sounds like you may have a bladder infection, call your doctor's office.
Make a list of what questions you want to ask and go through them with the
nurse, or make an appointment to get something to clear up the problem.
Sorry to hear your having problems Tammy.
I don't think 5 days of problems is a big deal because our bodies
are constantly going through lots of changes for the first year or
so after surgery BUT if you think you have an infection you really
should call your doctor. I know fluids are really important for
bladder infections. Have you been getting your water in? Also,
vitamins can build up in your system over time so you might want to
check with your nutrionist on the supplements you are taking to see
if they are causing the constipation. Have you been keeping a food
diary. That can really help if you have gas/constipation, etc to
look back and see if you changed something you were eating. I use
fitday.com to keep track of my eating and its a free website and its
great for keeping track of the protein you get in and also you can
look at a graph showing your weightloss which is encouraging.
Hang in there and keep us posted!!

Hi guys:
I am 7 months post op and I haven't had many problems until recently.
(about 5 days now) I am getting stomach cramps and I have been tired
and just not feeling right the last week. I do get alot of gas and I
am thinking that I am constipated because I go to the bathroom every
day but only a little has came out. Should I feel the cramps in the
stomach area or lower? What do you think? I think I also have a
Bladder or UTI infection because it burns down there and I am getting
cramps for my period but whatever it is it is keeping me from getting
my period. Maybe all this is related, I am not sure. Has anyone had
a lot of UTI's since the operation?
Thanks

Well everyone, yesterday I saw my doc for my two week postop. He
told me that I am doing great. I lost 19 lbs since the day of
surgery and a total of 40 lbs since November. I am now eating soft
foods for the next two weeks. Hell, I am just happy to be eating
again. Never ever want to see the sickening Boost and Ensure again.
My doctor asked me if I was sure I didn't want another case of it.
HAHAHA! What a joker. DOES ANYONE GET A HICCUP LIKE 20 TIMES A DAY?
I only get one but it happens all the time. I don't get it. Well I
think that is it for now, hope everyone is doing great too. Feel
better Laurie!!!!

Mary-
Yes remember the reason you did this..... to gain a healthy life!
Every doctor is different in how they tell their patients to restart
eating food, my doctor had me eating a srambled egg 1oz and cottage
cheese 5 days out. And after 3 weeks moved me up to eating anything I
wanted that wasn't super hard.- 2 oz... I have had NO problems and
have never felt hungry, I eat 3 meals a day and 1-2 snacks i am at 8
1/2 weeks now and eat between 3-4 oz of food. Always eating my
protein first then veggies/friut and once in awhile I do have a bite
or so of carbs..... anyways my point is don't make yourself go crazy
thinking you are starving ....give yourself something soft and a
little heavy, oatmeal, egg, cottage cheese and it will help satisfy
you. Also don't drink during your meals and at least 30-45 min
afterwards longer if you can.... Then it won't wash the food out of
your pouch..... GOod luck and keep your chin up.... it does get
better!!!

I found that eating too fast and not chewing food up enough will
make me feel sick. I haven't had any problems like that in awhile,
I guess we all learn the hard way about that but what happens to me
is that if I don't chew something up enough it will feel like
cardboard or a rock going down and it hurts! Before going back to
pureed foods I would definately try slowing down and chewing more.

Hi Everyone
This article was sent to me by a very dear friend. It is very one
sided but it does give you something to think about. Hope you enjoy
reading it.
Angela in Canada
I am quite sure you might not know this information but you will
now.
READ IT AND WEEP or GET MAD!!!!!
Then I suggest we cut it out of our diets as best you can!
Slow Poisoning
I wondered if there could be an actual chemical causing the massive
obesity epidemic, so did a friend of mine, John Erb. He was a
research assistant at the University of Waterloo, and spent years
working for the government.
He made an amazing discovery while going through scientific journals
for a book he was writing called The Slow Poisoning of America. In
hundreds of studies around the world, scientists were creating obese
mice and rats to use in diet or diabetes test studies.
No strain of rat or mice is naturally obese, so the scientists have
to create them. They make these morbidly obese creatures by
injecting them with a chemical when they are first born. The MSG
triples the amount of insulin the pancreas creates, causing rats
(and humans?) to become obese They even have a title for the race of
fat rodents they create: "MSG-Treated Rats"
MSG?
I was shocked too. I went to my kitchen, checking the cupboards and
the fridge.
MSG was in everything! The Campbell's soups, the Hostess Doritos,
the Lays flavored potato chips, Top Ramen, Betty Crocker Hamburger
Helper, Heinz canned gravy, Swanson frozen prepared meals, Kraft
salad dressings, especially the 'healthy low fat' ones. The items
that didn't have MSG had something called Hydrolyzed Vegetable
Protein, which is just another name for Monosodium Glutamate. It was
shocking to see just how many of the foods we feed our children
everyday are filled with this stuff. They hide MSG under many
different names in order to fool those who catch on.
But it didn't stop there. When our family went out to eat, we
started asking at the restaurants what menu items had MSG. Many
employees, even the managers, swore they didn't use MSG. But when we
ask for the ingredient list, which they grudgingly provided, sure
enough MSG and Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein were everywhere. Burger
King, McDonalds, Wendy's, Taco Bell, every restaurant, even the sit
down ones like TGIF, Chilis', Applebees and Denny's use MSG in
abundance.
Kentucky Fried Chicken seemed to be the WORST offender:
MSG was in every chicken dish, salad dressing and gravy. No wonder I
loved to eat that coating on the skin, their secret spice was MSG!
So why is MSG in so may of the foods we eat? Is it a preservative or
a vitamin?
Not according to my friend John. In the book he wrote, an expose of
the food additive industry called The Slow Poisoning of America,
(www.spofamerica.com < http://www.spofamerica.com ), he said that
MSG is added to food for the addictive effect it has on the human
body.
Even the propaganda website sponsored by the food manufacturers
lobby group supporting MSG at
http://www.msgfacts.com/facts/msgfact12.html explains that the
reason they add it to food is to make people eat more.
A study of elderly people showed that people eat more of the foods
that it is added to. The Glutamate Association lobby group says
eating more benefits the elderly, but what does it do to the rest of
us?
'Betcha can't eat just one', takes on a whole new meaning where MSG
is concerned!
And we wonder why the nation is overweight? The MSG manufacturers
themselves admit that it addicts people to their products. It makes
people choose their product over others, and makes people eat more
of it than they would if MSG wasn't added.
Not only is MSG scientifically proven to cause obesity, it is an
addictive substance: NICOTINE for FOOD!
Since its introduction into the American food supply fifty years
ago, MSG has been added in larger and larger doses to the
prepackaged meals, soups, snacks and fast foods we are tempted to
eat everyday.
The FDA has set no limits on how much of it can be added to food.
They claim it's safe to eat in any amount.
How can they claim it is safe when there are hundreds of scientific
studies with titles like these?
The monosodium glutamate (MSG) obese rat as a model for the study of
exercise in obesity. Gobatto CA, Mello MA, Souza CT, Ribeiro IA. Res
Commun Mol Pathol Pharmacol. 2002 Adrenalectomy abolishes the food-
induced hypothalamic serotonin release in both normal and monosodium
glutamate-obese rats. Guimaraes RB, Telles MM, Coelho VB, Mori RC,
Nascimento CM, Ribeiro Brain Res Bull. 2002 Aug Obesity induced by
neonatal monosodium glutamate treatment in spontaneously
hypertensive rats: an animal model of multiple risk factors.
Iwase M, Yamamoto M, Iino K, Ichikawa K, Shinohara N, Yoshinari
Fujishima Hypertens Res. 1998 Mar Hypothalamic lesion induced by
injection of monosodium glutamate in suckling period and subsequent
development of obesity. Tanaka K, Shimada M, Nakao K, Kusunoki Exp
Neurol. 1978 Oct Yes, that last study was not a typo, it WAS written
in 1978. Both the medical research community and food "manufaturers"
have known MSG's side effects for decades!
Many more studies mentioned in John Erb's book link MSG to Diabetes,
Migraines and headaches, Autism, ADHD and even Alzheimer's.
But what can we do to stop the food manufactures from dumping
fattening and addictive MSG into our food supply and causing the
obesity epidemic we now see?
Even as you read this, George W. Bush and his corporate supporters
are pushing a Bill through Congress. Called the "Personal
Responsibility in Food Consumption Act" also known as
the "Cheeseburger Bill", this sweeping law bans anyone from suing
food manufacturers, sellers and distributors. Even if it comes out
that they purposely added an addictive chemical to their foods. Read
about it for yourself at:
The hunger should pass. Just think of the reasons you
had the surgery-to get skinny. Don't let anything get
in your way and if you're that hungry, eat cream of
wheat or oatmeal or a scrambled egg or something very

I just want GBP people and pre-GBP people to see that how nice things
can all work out. Plus I didn't mention how wonderful it was to be
able to walk around in my little red shorts and cute little beaded
red spaghetti strap top feeling for the first time in my life, like
one of the skinny girls! It's an awesome feeling which puts food
even further back in my mind. For many years I used to see heavy
people and ask myself : Am i that fat?, this time I was able to
think: WOW, SHE'S THIN AND CUTE AND I'M THINNER! It's a wonderful
feeling!
Was wondering if anyone else ever experienced what I am these days.
I am 7 weeks post-op this coming Friday and for the last week I've been
getting sick. So far about 4 times. It doesn't really seem to matter what I am
eating I even get nasuas on what I'm drinking. Not sure if I'm eating too fast
or what. Feels like a have a lump in my throat a good portion of the time.
I'm still on fairly soft foods and debating on whether to go back to pureed.
Any help or advice is appreciated.
Thanks,

Hi Rhen!
Welcome! I'm pretty new also. I had my surgery March 10th. Head hunger is the
worst, I know, but just take one day at a time. The results and benefits far
outweigh (no pun intended) the head hunger. You are doing a great job and just

Hi everyone,
Havent' posted in a while, but I want to share my cruise experience.
Dh and I took a fabulous Carnival four day cruise, our first one! I
had been very concerned about how I was going to deal with the eating
aspect of this, cuz all I have heard is that the best part of the
cruise is the food, well I am proof that you CAN have a fabulous time
without stuffing yourself all day plus, I dropped three more pounds.
I ate all day! However, of course I could not eat a lot, but I DID
NOT feel at all deprived like I thought I would. For breakfast I had
omelettes with cheese, mushrooms, onions and tomatoes, ate about a
third to a half of it plus, a half piece of bacon and a bite of
potatoes. This filled me up and I was satisfied. I drank my coffee
while I was standing in line waiting for my omelette to be prepared.
I was able to have a couple of drinks during the day with no problem
and for lunch I would have hotdog without the bun plus mustard. I had
a yogurt cone in the middle of the afternoon. Then at dinner, I had
soup, a little salad, a few bites of the main dish and vegetable plus
a taste of dessert. Then if my dh wanted to go to the midnight
buffet, I went and had a little piece of delicious roast beef and a
little chocolate mousse. I was just fine. I did not dump once!!!!
My blood work is coming back beautifully. Good iron and B12.
Cholesterol is still 205, but it has come down steadily without the
Cholsterol med I was on and my doctor encourages me to keep doing
what I'm doing and it will continue down.

Now that is living!!!! Good for you. I went on my first cruise for my
honeymoon in October and boy was it fun. There is so much to do that the food
was not our focus either. Glad to hear that you had so much fun.
So I'm sitting here reviewing my preop and day 90 post op pictures
and can hardly believe the changes. Since my 90 day pix I've lost an
additional 21 pounds (putting me at a total loss of 103 pounds), I
have lost another 4 inches from my chest, and another 4.5 inches from
my waist. I don't want to sound boastful about this, but man, I can
really look from the inside and see the outside changes. I've posted
a new pic for comparison. Folder Ray W - Omaha.

go!!! But to be honest I am a bit jealous. But one day it will be me too.

How much sugar is in your protein drink? I felt really yucky when I was on
liquids only (had lots of nausea) but as soon as I started on soft foods that
went away. I don't think dumping syndrome lasts all that long. I've only had
one episode of this and it was when I drank too much milk at one time but it
only lasted about 1/2 hour or so. But now I am 4 weeks post op and I am
handling milk in larger quantities without a problem. My doctor told me that
dehydration is what lands most WLS patients back in the hospital so I sipped my
way through the days in the beginning and always had a bottle of water in my
hand.

Hi! I have been reading for a few weeks and I (finally) have
something to ask. I am pre-op and am making up my mind on what
surgery to "fight for." Just an impromptu little survey: what type of
surgery have you all had, or are hoping to have? It seems like mostly
RNY, but what type? Proximal or distal? Any LapBand, VBG, or DSers?
Thanks all!
Hello,
Hello and welcome.....It really depends on you and your medical condition and
if you have had any previous surgeries etc. I haven't had surgery yet, but lap
is less invasive than open.
The lap band is not approved by most insurance companies in the United States.
there have been numerous problems with it and more surgical and medical problems
than helping ones.
I just read an article in the New England Journal of Medicine about numerous
stomach problems, bleeding and erosion problems with the band.
There are numerous people here that can give you their opinion and especially
those who have had the surgery themselves.
Again, welcome to the group and I wish you all the luck in what ever decision
you choose.

I still cant believe it....I went to my support group last night wanting to

received her message and I asked her who she talked to, and she couldn't give
me a name. I have 2 grown kids waiting with me to get it. It was Bull _ _ _

People at my support group have heard of her and there are complaints there as
well.
the only thing I can say is call every other day as I did and the only way to
shut me up is to give me my date. Well it worked.
She finally clicked and asked me what I did for a living and I told her and
there was dead silence on the other end. Then she became real nice and started
back peddling and trying to make it like oh it was everyone else's fault. I
just let her dangle and hang herself...

Stop grazing. Get back to eating 3 regular meals a
day. Read the Pouch Rules for Dummies.
I had my surgery on Monday, April 12th. On Wednesday, April 14th, I began a
pretty heavy period while I was still in the hospital. I am currently
pre-menopausal and my periods generally last for under 2 days. I didn't have
another period until May 29th and it was a "gusher." It also lasted 3-1/2 days
... longer than most.
I have given this lots of thought. In regular life situations when a girl
reduces her food intake dramatically (anorexia) one of the side effects is that
she loses her period. Well, we certainly haven't eliminated our food intake, but
all WLS patients have DRAMATICALLY reduced the amount of food they were used to
taking in. Moreover, while we feel better on the outside and can seem to get
back to our normal routines fairly quickly, I still believe that cutting and
re-attaching our internal organs is a serious stressor on our bodily cycles.
Since I am only 7 weeks out of surgery, and only one period out, I will have to
wait and see if I get another one the end of June. Hope this info makes sense to
your situation.

I am about 2 months post op now. I had one period after the surgery
(not a normal one either....very scant), but I totally skipped it

I assume this has to do with the surgery, but I don't remember ever
having been told to expect this.
Is this something other women have experienced post operatively?

Michelle,
I agree with Laurette. You will drive yourself made if are weighing
yourself daily or every other day. I did the same thing and would go
through some down feelings. My advise is to STOP looking at that darn
scale! The weight WILL come off as long as you're following your
physician's direction. The key thing to remember at this point of the
game is P A T I E N C E ! So what if you plateau, from what I
understand, women tend to plateau frequently through this process, so
relax and enjoy the ride. Do not get frustrated or discouraged,
you've already experienced enough of that in your past life. Now it's
time to live the life that you've chosen and relax. You'll be that
size 4 before you know it.
-Ray
Hi Michelle,
STOP weighing yourself. At least that's what my Dr. and his staff keep
telling me. You are probably gaining muscle and that's a great thing. You are
also probably losing inches and that too is a great thing. I was told to only
weigh myself once a month. On the same day and time each month to get an
accurate weight. Our weight fluctuates so much from day to day that we will
only be
causing us more grief if we jump on the scale everyday. Believe me I'm right
with you on this but I'm trying real hard not to.
Keep up the good work and keep your chin up. Take care and God Bless!!!

Has anybody off there "fallen off the wagon" and gotten back on

Hi everyone,
I am so discouraged and need some advise. I has surgery on May 13th but I am
already at a plateau, or at least I think. I haven't lost one pound in 5 days.
Is this normal to plateau this early? The only thing different from this week
and last is that I am now on soft foods, and am having a little harder time
getting in my quota of water. But I exercise every day faithfully and it is
depressing to be stuck already. I am going to have my daughter hide my scale so
I am not weighing myself everyday because it is really bumming me out.

I guess every doctor does the surgery a little different. My doctor has
bypassed the entire stomach that has the gastric acids (it is not longer

made the

If you are having trouble passing gas, and have a tummy ache everytime you even
drink water, you should contact your doctor right away, especially if you have
not had a bowel movement. Tell him all your concerns that you posted here. I
have not had my surgery yet but I have done alot of research on this type of
surgery. So first thing tomorrow please call your doctor.
yes that does help thanks..
My doctor told me as long as it was comfortable for me I could have sex
whenever I wanted to. He just told me to be VERY carefull and use protection!
I'll tell you what, sex when you're 70 lbs lighter is totally AWESOME!! LOL

I want to thank all of you who kept me and my family in prayer during my
surgery. I am out, and everything went fine. My surgery was 6/1. I am
still in some pain, and having a bit of a hard time sipping things. It
seems that everything I sip hurts...jello, broth, shake...it all causes
me to have what feels like a good, old fashioned SERIOUS tummy ache. I
know that I am not getting in enough protein or water, at this point, so
I have started feeding myself through the g-tube, as the doctor
suggested. I have also had a hard time getting rid of gas. I am
bloated, and no matter how much I walk or move around, it just stays
there, immovable! I never thought there would ever be a time when I
would pray I could pass gas!
The funniest thing, though, is that I have been reading this group for
almost a year. I went into this surgery feeling as though, thanks to
all of you, I was as prepared as I could possibly be, for any outcome.
I understood it all, and knew what to do. But now, as I sit here with
staples and tubes and a horrible stomach ache, I feel like I know
nothing. It's as if all my knowledge went away with the fog of
anesthetic. PLEASE...anyone out there, just remind me again what the
focus should be at this point. I am on full liquids, but having a hard
time with even broth. Should I be eating when I can, or 3 meals a day?
I'd appreciate a quick brush-up course on the first few weeks.
Thanks!

I had sex as soon as my stitches were out. i think it was 2 weeks after
surgery maybe 2 1/2... Anyways, as soon as you feel good is okay, just don't
overdue it and you will be fine.

My doc suggested 6 weeks. I didn't ask the rationale, but I might guess that it
had something to do with the internal healing process and the weight that you
put on your abdomen. So if he isn't lying on top of you ... probably sooner.
Hope this helps.

just thinking out loud since you folks cannot see me... to embarressed to
ask the doc but how long do one has to wait before having sex after surgery,
i do not even know how many times i have been asked this question..could
some one help me out on that.. starlet
Honestly it's a personal thing and depends a lot on positioning for
obvious reasons. During the first couple of weeks you want to minimize
the amount of pressure on the abdominal area, but that doesn't mean you
can't have sex. I know I waited at least a week but I don't think it's
was too much longer than that. Just kinda waited until I started to get
back into normal activities.

Notes:
There was discussion regarding Knox previously on this
board. The consensus was that Knox is not the type of
protein that we are after while trying to lose weight.
You may want to check further on this because I'm not
an expert.

Thanks to all the well wishers and good thoughts and prayers. I keep
hearing about people drinking protein shakes right away...I am on
clear liquids for 10 days...then all liquids thru 3 weeks, then
pureed for one week, then slowly introduce soft foods. I have my one
week post-op appt. with the surgeon tomorrow. I am gonna ask about
shakes...I would appreciate the change. Jello gets boring quick!!!
My diet consists of Jello, SF Popsicles, Broth, Propel water, decaf
tea, and that is about it. I wonder tho, those of you that are
having difficulty getting in your protein, have you tried Knox
Nutrajoint? It comes in both a powder and a liquid, both flavored
and not, and can be easily mixed into anything for some additional
protein. Also, nonfat powdered milk...mixed in with almost anything
will add the protein.
Good luck to all.

That is a great weight loss already! I personally eat
3 meals a day, with perhaps an evening snack-but not
always. I don't want to get into the habit of eating
more times per day, which is what got me into this
mess in the first place. I've lost 136 lbs, with 64
to go till goal. I'm 7 months out. I think you can
eat a big variety of foods. Just eat slow, test the
waters to make sure it doesn't make you sick. Good
luck,

This is why I like shopping at vitalady. I can pick a
shake that is low in calorie and high in protein. I
like to watch my calorie count as well as my protein
to ensure faster weight loss.
Wow Ray, that's great! Keep up the awesome work and good luck on the
next goal, I'm sure you'll make it!

Thank for being here, keep it up all you wanna bes and newbies, I

this happens alot to everyone. i got stuck on a plateau at 3 weeks out for
about a month and then id lose 10 pounds or so and get stuck on a plateau for
antoher 3 weeks etc etc etc. I am 6 months out and lost 63 pounds. I am very
happy, losing slow but not alot of hanging fat etc. Now that weather is nicer
and I can walk more I hope to start building more muscle. Good luck dont worry

I'm just wondering if anybody else has this problem. I'll get down
to the low numbers in a certain weight like 173 or 183 and I can't
seem to break down into the next level of weight. Such as 168 or
178. Seems like when I want to get to that next set of numbers it
really sticks. Is this just a me thing? That fat really wants to
hang in there!
Hello All!
Well my surgery on May 25th went great! I feel great and should be
back to work in a week.
I went to the Dr. for my one week checkup and had lost 19.5 pounds,
that just blows my mind.
Thank you for all of your support, I will post more later

Hi Everyone,
I had surgery on May 13th, 2004. So far I've lost 23 pounds. Is
there a norm for the amount of weight you should be losing? I
started out at 261 and I'm down to 238. I've been walking about 1
1/2 miles a day or working out at Curves and I was back to work after
a week. I had the open procedure but I feel great. I've already
started on pureed food and I feel much better now that I can actually
eat something. Is there any problem foods anyone would recommend to
stay clear of in the beginning? I hear fresh bread is a big issue.
What about lettuce? Someone told me to steer clear of that also.
Also, do you just eat 3 meals a day or do you eat little meals
throughout the day? I've been doing 3 meals with a snack usually in
the am and sometimes at night. I can't tell though if I'm hungery
but I'm just trying to keep my protein intake up. I still can't get
above 40 grams a day. Usually I'm in the low 30's even with a
protein shake.
I am only instructed for the first two weeks to have 2oun
